Dear Students,

The storm of Prelims 2021 has just settled and you must have entered a phase to evaluate your preparation level while analyzing the changing nature of the Prelims exam. The Commission has stood up to its reputation to be dynamic, challenging, and ever-evolving. This year we have seen the continuation of conceptual questions derived from a rich balance of static and current affairs, there has also been a return of pre-2013 format with assertion/reasoning based questions, questions on personality, and major sports events etc.

Validating our performance with more than 2000+ selections in 2021 through our SFG Test series, we are hereby entering the 4th year of one of our most innovative programs for successfully cracking the Prelims Examination.

The Select Focus Group test series has been designed exactly to the demand of the Prelims examination. In Level 1 we will focus on:

  1. Developing theart of solving prelimsquestionsalong with developing a considerable knowledge base.
  2. Completechapter-wise coverageof standard books and all NCERTs (often neglected by students).
  3. 10Previous Years Questionswill be covered in each test, to accustom the students towards the type of questions asked by UPSC.
  4. Focusing onanalytical questionswith interlinkages of different dimensions.
  5. We will not be covering current affairs at this level, ratherfocus on the static syllabusand get it done comprehensively.

Notice: SFG 2022 - Level 1 Entrance test is now scheduled to be held on 26th Dec. 2021 and the program will start from 10th Jan. 2021.

If the government allows the education institutes to reopen, then the tests will be conducted via both online and offline modes for all our centres. Otherwise, we will be conducting the tests in offline mode in Hyderabad and Patna centres and in online mode for the rest of the country.

The registration for the test can be done byclicking here.

SFG – How it works

Select Focus Group (SFG) is a small group of students who are selected by ForumIAS every year for coaching them to clear the UPSC Prelims Examination. Every single candidate selected and retained consistently in the group with Top ranks has cleared the Prelims examination in the past.

100 Students will be selected for the Select Focus Group, through the SFG Entrance Test, who will be required to report at 7AM every day 5 days a week to write an hour-long test based on a pre-planned syllabus, followed by a discussion on the same.

Candidates who are unable to make it to the SFG, will be maintained in a Reserve List, who can also write the tests. Candidates who couldn’t clear the cutoff and are unable to make it into both SFG and RLG can register for the 2nd Entrance Test.

Tests are conducted daily and results are provided within 8 hours of the test with Name and Rank list for candidates to evaluate their daily performance. On the basis of ranks, about 50% of bottom-performing students from SFG are migrated to the reserve list on a weekly basis, and an equal number of students from reserve list (RLG) are moved into SFG.

The decision of the management in this regard is final and not subject to dispute. Please note that this migration is done not keeping in mind the overall merit list but moving away bottom 50% from SFG and picking up an equal number of people from RLG.

Thus those who may be getting more than RLG students, but are bottom 50 in SFG will be moved to RLG.

Every month, the bottom 20% or so non-performing students are eliminated from the program to maintain the quality of competition.

All candidates writing the CSE 2022 are eligible to apply for the entrance test.

This year we introduce some changes as to how we conduct the SFG exam. Please note that changes that we bring are always in response to the examination pattern, the student feedback, and our own learning with respect to how to best enable a serious candidate to clear the exam.

Application Procedure

  • The program will commence from 10th January 2022, admission to which will be entrance-based. The Entrance Test will be conducted on 26th December 2021 in both online and offline mode. The results of the Entrance Test will be announced by 28th Dec. 2021.

Adult franchise is about equal voting rights for everyone, agreed. But in the context of the given statement, it seems more about the freedom of choice of the people to elect or vote out the representatives.

Can someone explain this?

Idk if this is sound but the way I solved this was, that the concept of UAF stands more for equal rights than it does for freedom of choice to choose representatives. The second statement was an explanation for political sovereignty. So the most appropriate option in my opinion was equal rights, as seldom have I seen a question in GS where the context alters the most appropriate answer.

"Seldome have I seen a question in GD where ghe context alters the most appropriate answer."

You have made a good observatio .

Remember two things.

1. Even in Mains, if you have a paragraph long text, followed by a direct question, remember that you will get marks for answering the direct question ultimately

2. In life if someone tells you a long good thing and then put a but and then says sonething else - the part said before "but" is BS.

Example, "Though your marks are very good, and you have studied very hard, and you deserve to clear this exam more than you friends , but ..."

Example 2: "Look i really like you, but .."

Can someone explain how is parliamentary privilege an instrument to keep a check on executive?

Same question, how is parliamentary privilege an effective check on executive?

I am not understanding that all things are mentioned in NCERT. Are you not reading NCERTs or you are just trying to take it lightly. My point is this is the time to do NCERTs. Not later than this. If you dont do it well now, it will be difficult later.

Everything has to be done at a certain time. Do you know why some people are caught in low wages? because they did not skill up at the right time. Thing of a CS Engineer, who passed out from college. He has been on bench in TCS and things company is giving him free salary. Five years like that, and he has no skills. Now 5 years later, he wants a hike. Management fires him because he has no skills and a fresher can be hired at less cost. Now this guy will have to again join some company at fresher salary.

Reading these things that are given in the book are very important. If you do not do it now, even if you do it later, it WONT matter!

There are some people I know who have not read basic books. Now their attempts are over. Now when they join job at Byju's or Unacademy, they are reading these books for the first time. Also they will end up getting less salary. Just the same as someone who has given 1 attempt AND NOT READ THE BASIC BOOKS. The people with 6+ attempts feel entitled that they have 6+ years UPSC experience but when the technical round happens for job in EdTEch companies, they get hired at fresher salaries. This is the time to study and finish them up.

In the end and in the exam, we will solve things by guess work only. Educated guess work I should say. But right now, what is to be done from book, has to be done from the book alone.

What could be the possible reason to miss somethng verbatim from the book ( though the question is conceptual )

Sorry I am bothering you all but i am really not satisfied with my scores in SFG. It really showed me the mirror that I am lacking in lot of areas. I am working hard doing things religiously and following the schedule. I am unable to find out what is going wrong after putting a lot of hard work. My confidence has taken a dip and i am having sleepless nights struggling with my self.

any suggestions what can I do to improve myself ?

Bro, don't think this as a Test, instead see this as an opportunity to zero in on your weaknesses....

Many times what happens is that when we give FLT mocks, we might score well because at most 10 - 15 questions are asked from any one subject.... So even if your command on any subject is weak, that gets pushed under the carpet. Like, you may score high despite choosing to not attempt 9 out of 10 questions from that subject.

But now, because we are going through the micro topics, this can help us identify exactly where and what has gone wrong, or what we need to focus more on.

I will give my example only....

I scored really good in Test 17 and Test 18. The syllabus was from first phase of revolutionary activities to 1939

But I scored really bad today and yesterday, the syllabus being 1939 to independence, and today's syllabus on Peasant, tribal revolts, education, press etc....

Yes I am really sad. I spent 6 hours yesterday and for a moment I felt that had I spent only 3 hours also I would have scored same....

But then I can at least go back to these chapters again and focus on where exactly I am making mistakes right?

While reading I might have skipped through some finer details, and now I can go back an focus on them.

So don't worry, take this as a journey towards your success

And one simple and obvious tip to increase your score is try and get all 10 PYQs correct no matter what....

(Even I have to improve my accuracy with PYQs 🙈 )

@SFGTeam @forumiasacademy @Neyaw

Just a technical suggestion (read it as request)

It would be great if we can have a filter of Correct/Incorrect questions in the personalised solution webpage. This can surely help to review wrong questions at last minute.

Thanks :)

Scored31.33.

This is way lowest than lowest itself.

- Opened Sociology NCERTs for the first time for this. While reading Ifeltthere is nothing much of "Substance" in the books. Read half-hartedly, without any interest.

Learning- "RESPECT EVERY BIT OF THE PROVIDED SYLLABUS"

Glad that now

@Neyawn Sir there has been a issue I guess lot of us are facing this time with SFG particularly in history and it is that statements are directly picked up from spectrum or say NCERT and put as questions and options. Now one way of looking at it is you want us to learn spectrum thoroughly and all but on the other hand what I see is it actually promotes and perpetuates rote learning and not applying the critical mindset.

Polity questions were analytical and expected thinking on broader lines and questions were not so direct but here in history questions are directly picked from book's para and even like if you miss a statement or just think on broader lines who will get the question wrong.

In history its all about interpretations and different people can see different causes for different events and its not true that spectrum is always right wrt to interpretation of events .

And hence would really like a change in pattern in the way questions are asked to actually help us think on broader lines and not really just rote learn spectrum.

Same issues I am highlighting on daily basis from start of Modern history portion before that all were fine. About questions with their subjective nature,  sources consideration dwindling between NCERT and Spectrum. Agreed that we need in depth analysis but turning and twisting statements on base of spectrum unhidden meaning I am not able to analyse properly. Even in two days Modern history will be done but still I'm not sure about answering question and analysis part. Many of us are in same queue. Few are outspoken few are not.

Just curious, how many of you answered the first question correctly ?

So Forumias believes that China is a democracy! A justification by the State rather than 'Free and fair scrutiny via elections (direct/indirect) by the people' is the basis of Democracy! Indeed a hard idea to subsribe to. Got it wrong there by choosing option A. Please do correct me if I'm interpreting it wrong.

I am glad this makes you angry. If the paper did not make some of you angry, it was not designed right.

Coming to your question, any commentary you will read on Democracy will state ( almost in the first two paragraphs itself ) is that elections merely do not ensure democracy. At least 3 NCERTS including the Post Independence one have the line in some format - "but merely periodic elections do not ensure democracy"

Pakistan has elections - would you call it a true democracy? It has a deep state problem.

China has electoral process - they will call their Govt democratic and representing the will of the people . Problem? Single Party system.

Note that many small states of Africa will have a dictator who will call it a democracy as he will be elected every time. Sometimes, he may be elected as he is the only one contesting. Elections are a necessary condition, but not a sufficient condition, for democracy.

Dear Forumias,
Please don't delay the tests. If given the present situation offline tests are not possible then take them in online mode. And whenever in future taking offline tests will be possible then take them in offline. Because i think in January when the tests will begin than the schedule will be tightly packed. That will be very hectic and difficult to manage for the people like us who have to manage other things as well ( eg. - in my case PhD and for working professionals etc. etc. )
Secondly through SFG, it is very easy to track one's progress. Even though i have opted for offline mode but i am willing to give tests in online mode because I believe exam is not going to wait. Pardon me if i am sounding a little desperate. Please reevaluate your decision.
Regards

@forumiasacademy As per programme launched In both online and offline mode. And now many people will write tests in offline mode. A genuine Request to upload the exam question paper before the paper start and people (of other cities apart from Patna and delhi) who want to attempt it on paper by printing same and Answers will be filled or bubbled on online portal. It will help us to take offline exam feel. Many of us wants the same.@Neyawn Sir if possible please accept the request

@Mutant Totally agreed. Last year SFG started in the first week of Jan when the prelims exam was supposed to happen in the last week of June. Since this year's prelims is going to be in the first week of June, SFG should ideally start by the 15th of Dec itself.
Please conduct the programme in online mode for the first month and make it available offline for the second month if the govt. allows.
The Dec-16th calendar was perfect.
Please don't delay this further than a week.
Humble request, @Neyawn sir.

@karthikguhan511605 I think it's top 100 and looking at people comments i think it should be around 65-70, I am way out pf competition, don't know how others are able to score such great marks meanwhile i struggled to get 40. Need to put in lot of efforts.

You should not be disaapointed at this time at all. All you have to do is wait for offline students and see how they score. You will know if people used infair means, though I think that the kind of paper it was, lot of unfair means could not be used.

We are more than 5 months from the Prelims. This is the time when we can work and drastically change where we stand just before the exam on June 5

Huh? So according to the official key, Mahatma gandhi wasn't the leader of the movement ? :o [But the solutions that forumias provided says the official key says answer is 'a']

@Forumiasacademy this has been given wrong info in explaination Please update

Regardless of what the key says, How is Mahatma Gandhi not the leader of the movement? :o This beats the logic out of me! [Pg:448 of spectrum also says "He was chosen to be the leader of the struggle"]

My take.... Though Congress Chose Mahatma to lead the movement, even before it's start, all the leaders were arrested... This made the revolt leaderless, with many young new generation, never heard off people coming to the forefront.

Even in this article it says the same!!!

In spectrum also, it mentions that QIM was leaderless, and hence there was violence and no restraint..
