[ Official ] How was the Prelims 2021 paper?

To everyone who appeared today : please do not read reviews about today’s paper on telegram etc. Prima facie most(who did not appear) will claim this was easiest paper in century if not in decades.

Right now no one can decide it was easy or difficult. Definitely it was different.

So have your lunch (light or else you will feel sleepy in CSAT, which could have some new pattern.) and relax sometime. Good luck for CSAT

Good thing about this exam is that it teaches us value of Madhyam marg(neither too sad nor too happy).

Next 15 days are crucial for everyone whether one clears 2021 prelims or not(unless it was your last attempt or you are planning an exit), friends we will have to study as we don't have choice.

P.S : I have seen so many failures in life that now I feel same in case of joy and misery. From 12th October,  will start covering socio and ethics. Please inform if you have sociology optional.

Thank you and good luck for results !!

Hello frenzzz I see peeps are starting to gather. Confession: I have no hope of clearing the prelims because the paper and my performance were like that. Having said that I have no regrets because I’m proud of my efforts (is that too vain to admit on a public platform??) and don’t think I could have anything differently. There’s always going to be that “I could have revised this one more time”. But realistically speaking, I made the best use of my time in what I felt was a sustainable manner. Now what will be will be.

P.S I would really like to have a chat with the people who made the CSAT paper…. Do they like torturing people or is it just a Sunday affair?

True even if we would have got 10/20/30 more days , I don't feel that scenario would have changed. Luck is key player in such cases.

Koi engineer bata do pressure cooker ka answer. Does area of hole in lid affect temp inside?

You expect too much from engineers :D

My thought process during exam: size of hole will decide entry of outside air, which can change the temperature inside.  Don't know it is right , wrong or baseless

What should be the plan for next year after this prelims? Do you people any suggest any additions to basic books, newspaper + 1 monthly compilation and lots of revision for pre?

+ mental preparedness to deal unpredictability

@Conquer I think they are asking anything random in the name of current affairs.

True however that randomness cannot be targeted so there is no point in chasing such random themes. I remember UPSC once asked question on GI Tag and every institution started giving list of GI Tag which is huge liability from student' perspective. Similarly last year UPSC asked agriculture based questions and this time market was flooded with agriculture content. So focus should  be on basic materials + newspaper + 1 magazine .

Every year the topic list for aspirants keep on increasing.

From next year, we will have sports section in pt 365, so much more to cram 😕

Ha ha I feel they will name in Personalities in news to cover such random awards, sports etc

In parole question the phrase "make out a sufficient case" doesn't have any role ?

Why they are so much hurry to prepare earlier even vajiram used to take a day or two time but for them we are customers hurriedly give keys (kaamm Pura Karo)make new customers from next day

It is more about search results, less about authentic answer key. Because of excitement most next year's aspirants eagerly search for keys once paper is over. So various coaching institutions relase quick answers key so that they can appear in search results.  This way they indirectly advertise their upcoming courses.

A year ago, if someone had come to me for advice on whether to prepare for UPSC or not, I would have encouraged them enthusiastically. "Follow your dreams" and all that shit. Now I'm not so sure.

The issue is that competition is rising while vacancies are reducing. Particularly in the last few years, as with the explosion of  internet access across India (thank you Jio), people have access to the best resources and the best strategies. Plus a variety of other factors.

Right now there are atleast 30,000 - 50,000 aspirants who are genuinely good enough to clear Prelims. Probably that number is higher. And it will only keep rising. UPSC has the unenviable task of selecting about 10,000 from those huge numbers. If they conduct conceptual tests like we want them to, the cutoffs will increase unsustainably. And so they resort to the easy way out. Make GS more random. Make CSAT tougher. Eliminate rather than select.

We do have other options though. The number of vacancies can be increased. But that's not gonna happen with the current policy of minimum government and maximum governance.

Another ideal option can be to increase the number of people who'll write Mains (say, to about 50,000) and then select the best from them. But again, this won't work due to logistical difficulties and economic reasons.

So most probably UPSC will continue this way only. Make GS more random. Make CSAT tougher. Until competition reduces as people realise the futility and randomness of the whole process.

And that makes me sad and pessimistic. Sad that so many bright people are trying so hard yet not able to break the barrier. Pessimistic that things are only gonna get worse.

If you're clearing prelims, make the most of it. This is an opportunity that many dream of but few get to experience.

If not, even after repeated attempts, probably it's time to deeply think about your future.

PS - I usually try to be as optimistic as I can. But today I just don't feel like it. I might clear though (from various keys). But even if I do, it doesn't feel deserved. It's luck.

How will conceptual papers increase cutoff unsustainably? 2018 was a pretty conceptual paper with cut off dropping to 98(from 107 in 2017).

The major reason I could think of is that UPSC has gone full throttle against coaching institutes, esp from last year. Another plausible reason is that maybe they dont want aspirants to prepare full time for long period of time.

True. However while making an attempt to break backbone of coachings, UPSC's unconventional paper will further increase dependency on coachings.

Aspirants will try to cram more random facts like past few years:  GI tags, reports etc.

Next year coachings will include random sports facts in test series and monthly magazine and UPSC will ask some other random thing.

@Phantom Fomo itna jyada ho jata hai. In the quest to learn random stuff basics get neglected.
Very true, this was my 1st thought post paper.
In the tussle between coaching & upsc aspirants are over loaded.
I had pledged last yr that I will not do pt-365, indices (200 atleast), still did. Cos of the fear.

And jio revolution has added fuel to fire. So much information is available that it is almost impossible to stay away from content.

In this question 1st and 2nd statements aren't contradictory? First says passing on mitochondrial disease from parent(could be either mother or father) can be prevented.

2nd says mitochondrial disease entirely from mother.

Not asking from any argumentative  perspective. Just want to understand it !

It is trick used for search engines. Page post are created in advance so that it appears on top when someone search it.

The page content is updated once that event happens. Some will create page of result in advance(may be today only) , like check results here, how to check UPSC  2021 result etc.

In present era content is not for user it is for search engines. User will see what search engines displyas first.

Both the options are correct.

I asked it in context of this article:

I know this rage is temporary and it’s an every year affair. Every year tens of thousands will feel disrespected because of this exam and the sheer unfairness of it and they will have no option but to move on. However, anyone who calls this paper easy or suggests that basics or “logic” could help you clear it, please come meet me - I just wanna talk.

All this speculation about UPSC wanting to end coachings is BS, just that. If they wanted to do so, they’d stick to books- normal traditional books that everyone whether from rural area or a metropolitan can purchase and read. They won’t be making a shit fest of this sort year after year. Sure 35-40 questions can be solved from basic sources. Assuming you make absolutely no mistake in these questions, you still have to get 10-15 questions right along with negative marking. And every year there are going to be thousands who fall on the wrong side of this gamble. I am one of them this year. I lost so many questions even in questions where I had eliminated 2 options. If it’s a game of probability then it needs special kind of badluck to have so many wrong hits. And yet I know that I am not alone. I know many people are facing exactly what I am with probably much more at stake than me.

At the end of the day, we chose this for ourselves. But we also were told that there are going to be atleast some rules, some order to this chaos.@LetsGetThisBread ‘s daily targets literally kept me going on my worst days and I think it’s more than just unfair if they don’t end up with the desired result. Anyone who tries to preach about the pattern and approach of the exam at this point- please just don’t. Just stop. Let us grieve in peace ffs.

Everyone else who feels lost and hopeless, there are no right combination of words that will make you feel any better. I have attached so much importance to this exam that I don’t even feel it when people tell me I am more than this exam. But a line from Kota Factory goes - “War mein haarne wale warriors hote hain, losers nahi” You all are warriors. Please take care.

You have me! There were many questions where I eliminated two options but I landed on the wrong side :/

In the questions, I didn’t attempt, mere sab hunches sahi hain apparently :/

I am also one of them! I didn't attempt sochke ki galat na hojaye aur, parrrr sahi nikale.

If I would have played the gamble with some more thinking and analysis, I would have scored above 100. Its a gamble lady, and I have lost !

This was weird paper !! Those who attempted less , they feel they should have attempted more.  Those who attempted more , they feel they should have attempted less.

This randomness of paper is further complicated by random answer keys. Almost every institution is providing 8-10 answers differently.

Which key is feeling most reliable one so far?

If I had stopped studying a month earlier, toh bhi same marks aate.

Lost 2 questions to mis-reading. RBI governor wale mein didn’t read second statement said “constitution” and suba-pargana wale me descending kardiya. Ah. 😑 Upar se CSAT.

Lo Batao! Meine article 14 wala question galat kar diya - misreading, misreading, misreading!

Same here. And I am a law grad. Fml. Became overconfident, didn't even read the full question.

I don't know why people (specifically those who did not sit in exam hall to solve this type of paper) feel that there is 100% strike rate in easy questions. Those who appeared , know it very well that some silly mistakes are bound to happen.  What else we can do ? Pressure is going to play its role.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

The game is to take that gamble when you are into it.

exactly. For a spectator it is easy to take wild guess. Someone who appears in exam know it that on a bad day, one wild guess and game is over

My friends here we are:

Small confusion: Was the quit India resolution actually passed by the AICC? Wasn't the Congress leadership arrested prior to that?

Secondly: has anyone gotten hold of csat answer key? I failed csat last year... So atleast answer key for quant portions, please help

Thanks

In CSAT if you feel you are on borderline,  then please don't check CSAT keys. It will further destroy peace of mind.  Wait for 15-20 days , result will be out by then.

Where are your CSAT passage keys this year?

Looking forward to them. I want to torture myself today.

we live in strange world. We are roaming here and there for 2021 keys while official key of 2020 is still pending.  After a year who would remember what he/she has marked!!

Yes.

Even my younger brother who is not a graduate yet, guided me with atleast 5-6 questions this morning with so ease.

I was just feeling so amused at his innocence.

yesterday in public transport a co passenger took paper from me, glanced through it, and his review was : it was so easy paper. Any serious student(I still don't understand who is serious and who  is not ) would have attempted it in 90 minutes.

In my mind I was thinking: why am I so dumb and slow ?

@Dalinar expect lowest cutoff this year..it was random and confusing paper...but this kin of papers makes a mockery of hardwork put..sadly

I'm getting 94 but still lost all hopes of making it to the list.

Well the question is 94 as per whose key ?

If you will get 94 as per UPSC , no one can stop you from writing mains.

15,16,19,29,30 are available to citizens only. Art. 19(1) (f) had right to property. after amendment it was shifted under Article 300A. So that amendment changed the scope as well?

I marked this B

I marked this C

Which one can be right and which cant be?

(Jse question setter ne forum pr discuss krke paper set kiya ho and so, jo idhr btaynge whi shi hoga)

Add on to this.

I marked this and that in these questions. I have considered all wrong and now my score is xx.xx. what are my chances!!

There are so many variables that it is nearly impossible to predict. Gone are the days when one can claim with surety that I will get through.
