[Results] Prelims 2020 Over - Gearing for 2021

Dear Corona Bandhus

I am citing a report below (neeche link hai). It is a research paper by DTU faculty. I am writing down the results of their study :

  1. There are 2 models they have used. One says that cases will peak on 26th May, 2020. The other model says that peak will come on 25th June.

  2. The GoCoronaGo moment for Indians will come on 12 th September, the latter one says it will go away on 23 July 2020.

  3. It takes into account factors of social distancing and train movements, but cautions that it may spike if we don't maintain Taan-Doori (Social Distancing).

I would request you to put up a disclaimer as well that this is a "preprint" and not a peer-reviewed research work yet i.e. not yet tested by other scientists.

Please be careful while sharing such information as there is already a case study in Feb 2020 when Indian researchers' inaccurate work on HIV link with coronavirus genome got blown up at global level before the paper was retracted.

@rafael There won't be any Vaccine for next 12 Months. We all are already living with this Virus. And even when the  Vaccine arrives it will take 4 or 5 years to get all 140 Crore Indians vaccinated.

Peace Out.

India produces 3billion doses of  vaccine per year and serum produces 1.2 bl doses on its own...   we dnt need to vaccinate all 140crore ..  40/50 percent ll do the job .

@rafael I wish it was as simple as it looks. Please understand herd immunity doesn't work at any proposed loose numbers we throw at each other (saying 40-50% or 70-80%). There are several factors involved like demography, region specific etc etc ( a good layman explanation for understanding this is given in kurzegast video on herd immunity on YT). Also even if we have a number, production doesn't mean accessibility for all especially in a country like India.

As for exams happening or not, will the govt open up or not, we cannot rely on anything as of now, everyone even scientists and policy makers are understanding response to virus as of now. Heck the statistical models of last months can't be relied upon given the dynamic nature of problem here and ultimate shit will follow if it is found out that virus has mutated as major present trials across the world are based on earlier genome sequences of this virus.

What we can only do is focus on controllables and prepare well for any situation (easier said than done). Pls ensure safety of your loved ones. Call it poetic or whatever, but this makes me realise that this is one of those beautiful tragic moments where maybe you'll come face to face with life and death. something so heart wrenching yet so ignored in our materialistic world. Cherish these moments.

Guys one help and sorry if it's very off-topic. I am bad at travelling and giving exams (especially after half-sleep the very next day). Any solution for that? Red Bull, dark chocolates, meditation what worked for you.(My exam center is at 130 km from my home)

@balwintejas regarding the traveling part, have a relative staying near OTA Gaya (city area is 10 min drive from here). You can stay for the night here before the exam if you like. Let me know if this works for you.

Ok this is really some out of the box help brother! Never expected of such a nice gesture.

Though I would travel anyhow considering the situation is not good due to CoVID19 situation and so won't risk your family. Thanks again brother. People like you are rare. :)

Not an issue really. Relative says early morning transportation can be an issue there, do manage it carefully, or even pre-book if possible.

@SergioRamos @Sherkhan1428 thank you for your thoughts, keep up the good work.

With reference to carbon nanotubes, consider the following statements:
1. They can be used as carriers of drugs and antigens in the human body.
2. They can be made into artificial blood capillaries for an injured part of human body.
3. They can be used in biochemical sensors.
4. Carbon nanotubes are biodegradable.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
a) 1 and 2 only
b) 2, 3 and 4 only
c) 1, 3 and 4 only
d) 1, 2, 3 and 4

Friends, any link, source, reference for using carbon nanotubes as artificial blood capillaries? I got nothing even on searching specifically for it.

@Rangeela  can confirm its use in blood vessels recovery in brain atleast. (Have read research papers on it in college way back in 2017).

Also, from a non-science candidate perspective, the upsc question asks "can be" (a broad perspective). So 100% sure on this one.

Regarding vertical farming, 90% sure it's again ALL of them (10% if UPSC bewafa nikle toh). Vertical farming is criticized for its intensive energy needs but once you replace those energy needs from fossils to renewables it becomes highly favorable (which is why it's being pushed forward these days). Also do look at the "eco-friendly" term that BROADLY subsumes not just energy but water needs and nutrients availability and other stuff etc.

For non-science candidate, upsc mostly takes a broad view in applications question. And obviously this rule DOESN'T apply to all of science questions this time. eg. AI question. (There shouldn't be so much confusion on this one, the question asks "with present state of development" and "effective use", wireless communication is plain wrong ( it would have been correct if question asks possible use of AI in future).. We can keep debating about its efficacy in creating MEANINGFUL songs and movies but we do have examples of failed attempts like "sunspring short film 2016"  and last year I remember that Batman script trained by AI was hilariously incoherent ). So instead of reading between the lines in answer options we have to actually see the question carefully and most importantly the INTENT of the examiner while setting such question. Not going to debate btw on this. People can differ, I understand.
