[Results] Prelims 2020 Over - Gearing for 2021

@stoic97 Women issues are for real and I sympathize and understand what women have to go through. I have a sister too from whom I get to know things much better. But the way this blames upper caste Hindi belt engineers, it sounds like a wannabe activist speaking up.

@Koro-Sensei I fully sympathise with women. I'll go even further and say there's something fundamentally wrong with the way women are treated in the society at every level. I've been amongst boys group mostly and I know how bad their attitude towards women can be.
But the way caste is written here is an attempt to be 'woke'. This is not specific to her but something I observe with lots of my school colleagues too. Upper caste Hindu males from Hindi belt are mass oppressors in their opinion who are the worst kind of humans. By the way I am not even from the so called 'upper caste'.

@Koro-Sensei I have a lot to say on this but let's end it here.
I would mention one thing though. Being from an OBC caste myself and having many friends from different castes and religions, I can say for sure that patriarchy is present in every community and religion. Infact some of them have it even more than Brahmins.

@SandyMatash It's been an year since Mains happened. I don't even know how to react seeing my marks. Kuch yaad hi nahin hai kya likha tha and how it went. But seriously, this has been the year of delays and frustrating waits. Mains results took an entirety to come. And i can only imagine how it must have been for those who gave interviews this time around.

Last year I was getting scores in 80s and early 90s in Prelims tests but I ended up getting around 110 in actual Prelims.

The format and type of questions of the actual exam are different from what coaching wallahs ask. So we should take this as a revision test. No point in judging ourselves based on these scores.

@whatonly Wash your specs with soap and water before giving the exam. Fogging is considerable reduced this way.

@Howzthejosh we should stop seeing and thinking about this and study instead. These delay related discussions only lead to unnecessary anxiety. Also, it's almost certainly happening now with admit cards out and both Govt and SC determined to have it.

Hi all, hmko poochna tha ki exam postponement ke liye kuch groups kaam kar rahe h, and I appreciate their hard work. But yaha par jo senior log h, wo kya bata sakte h ki kya abi b exam postponement ka chance h kya? Considering ki ye ek admission exam nahi h?

Yaar Jo serious aspirants Hain unko ye exam cancellation ke chakkaron mein Nahin lagna chaahiye. It will waste your time and also lead to a lot of anxiety.

Chances of exam getting cancelled are minimal. People have been going to courts for NEET and it's being rejected again and again. CivilS is going to happen for sure. Admit cards are out as well.

Also, even if it's postponed to December, it's likely that virus would still be around by then. So postponement isn't going to help because we'll have to live with Covid in near future.

TLDR:- Kuch Nahin Hoga, padhaai Kar le bhaai.

@kochikaame True that. Anxiety build up ho gayi h. Unke arguments ek taraf valid bhi h, aur apni government jis tarah se ignore kar rahi h, aur judiciary bol rahi ki policy decision h.....ye sab news padh kar kar ke anxious ho gaye...swabhavik h

Soche ki china jab muslims ko rights nai deta, tab uske against canada, germany wale leaders UN mei bolte h ki human rights follow nai kar raha h......aur jab apne yaha government ignore kar rahi h itni saari requests, tab human rights ka hawaala dekar ke bhi students ko kuch nai milta.....polity  padh rahe they, tab se fir mann mei yahi sab chal raha h....

Ek aur baat mann mei ayi ki ...hm support karte h ki hmare leader tough stand lete h, jab china, pak infiltrate karte h, kyunki wo hmari territory ko forcibly lena chahte h...but ye log jo request kar rahe h, wo na to enemy alien h, na foreigners... citizens h, fir b unke saath tough stance kyu?

Kya hi democracy padh rahe hai, aisa vichaar aata h... bottom up ke bajaye top down approach h,  "by the ppl, for the ppl", fir 73rd and 74th amendment se local government banane ki importance kya acche se execute hui, jab local level pe rural students ko equal opportunity nai mil rahi. Unprecedented times demand some measures to quell the feeling of injustice being done to them. Justice lagna chahiye ki hua h. It should be perceived like that, ye padhate h, but kya karte h kya hi pata.

I agree it's complicated and challenging for a lot of people but delaying it further has its set of problems too. It's not a black and white issue. Exam delay hone par bhi bahut jyaada anxiety hogi logon ko.

If you or anyone is getting worried or anxious about this, I would recommend meditation. It has brought down my stress and anxiety levels to a good enough extent.

I didn't read newspapers of the last month before prelims in my prior attempts but I felt it might hurt mains prospects.

I kind of agree with him. I gave my first 2 attempts with full time preparation but I joined a job in January this year and now giving my final attempt along with it.

I think it has helped me go through the crisis period smoothly and also made me feel more confident in general. Also, I believe I can look at other career paths as well now.

So I suppose it makes sense to look up for other opportunities after one or two serious attempts.

Any idea when are the Mains 2019 marks expected to come?

I missed Prelims 2018 cutoff by 3 marks and cleared Prelims 2019 pretty easily (My score most likely was between 110-115).

But, fucking up Vision Tests has been constant for me. I think I've never scored more than 100 in any of their tests. It's usually in 80s for me. Today also, I only got 85 :(.

I don't intend to boast here or call credibility of Vision Tests into question. All I am saying is the results here do not reflect how prelims may go. This paper was way different than how CivilS was. Also, UPSC is most likely making a conscious effort to not make papers on similar lines. So please don't get disheartened people. Let's learn something out of this and not overthink about it.

6.2k views
@Sheraaaa 130 in Pre 2018 is damn good.

I'd say 2017 onwards, CivilS exam is diverging more and more from Vision Tests. So yeah, you can say Vision Tests are getting outdated to an extent. Also, I feel vision tests these days involve minimal logic and it's about either knowing the answer or not. CivilS is certainly not like this.

Good people of Forum.. Thank you for existing.. I am a newbie with first serious attempt..Left my job for this. So i have been ticking all the boxes wrt UPSC preperation, but being a bit bogged up in this final hour.

Could you people please elaborate a bit on how to go about for last 15 days..I mean share your experiences (what worked/what didn't).

I hope this will others like me also.

Thank you in advance

Apart from what others have discussed, it's important to be in a good shape of mind on the day of Prelims. The exam involves elimination and intelligent guesses for which, mental calmness is required.

1  I'd say stay away from negative influences and thoughts till prelims.

2. Try to wake up early to get the schedule right because you need to be at your peak at 9:30 AM on 4th October.

3. Meditate for 15-30 minutes every day if possible. It has helped me a lot personally.

4.6k views

For those who are feeling anxious, stressed and sleep deprived, here is a meditation tutorial by the great S.N. Goenka

Meditation won't solve all your problems but it will certainly make you feel better and relaxed, which will make you better equipped to deal with them. Do it for 15-30 minutes twice a day.

Trust me, time spent on it would be completely worth it.

Earlier I was worried if I would infect my kin after giving the exam travelling 150Km. Now it's a different game.

My wife is infected along with her whole family, out of 7 members (two houses - ours and my wife's parents) I am the only one who is not infected yet. I just think I am a bit late for the party. There is a high chance that I will be infected in the next few days, I just hope I don't show up weak on the exam day. I am not complaining about the last ten days especially about the pressure or the number of visits to the hospitals or to get tested (3 times till now) when my temperature is more than normal but I couldn't stop thinking about how 2 or 3-step exams like this are being conducted.

I just wanted to say that this is not right, this is not how pandemics are dealt with. I sincerely hope that the selected candidates from this thread/year be more empathetic, sensible, and revolutionary. I lost respect to the previously selected candidates who didn't utter a single word about the prevailing situation or represent the problems of the aspirants. I am not proud of this exam anymore.

Funny thing is I would be 32+ next year and this would be my last attempt.

I am truly sorry for the position you are in right now.

As bad as I may sound here, I don't know what's the solution. Delaying the exam further or cancellation has its own sets of problems. If the exam happens in December or January, pandemic is most likely not going away by then.(might be even more severe) Or if the exam is cancelled altogether, next year becomes even more problematic.

It's just one of those fucked up situations with no easy solutions or right/wrong. I understand why someone would not speak up because this is a very complicated and grey issue.

There was a time when following news was considered a great thing. I always felt awareness is important and it helps shape a person as a productive member of the society.

But now, I am just done with news. I think too much connectivity and awareness has more cons than pros. Add to that, absolute state of media these days. All we see these days are things to agitate people. I feel like giving up news altogether once done with CivilS preparation.

@Howzthejosh The problem isn't about whether the show should be telecasted or not anymore.
The idea has already entered in discourse. Now WhatsApp university and social media will do the rest.
I used to be a strong supporter of social media and free speech at one point. Now I feel it has the potential to create unrest and social tensions, as it's become a free playground for propagandists of all kind.

@Patootie I visited Kerala for a solo trip last year after Mains. I fell in love with the state. I felt there's a feel good factor to the place, particularly for tourists with all the greenery, laid back lifestyle, backwaters and nice people.

I'll visit again for sure. I had such an amazing time.

4.5k views
@Patootie I've lived almost my entire life in Metro cities, so the greenery was really substantial for me.
Good and bad people are everywhere ofcourse but most people I met were open for conversations and were largely polite as well. A good number of them also understood and spoke Hindi. Being a CivilS aspirant who loves to know about different cultures and people, my interactions with people were very enlightening. I found awareness levels amongst Malayalis to be high in general.

@Challenger_Deep CivilS is one of the most unpredictable exams in India. You never know things might turn out in your favour on D Day.
Since you've read everything multiple times, you certainly have a chance. Don't feel defeated already because if you go with that attitude, you won't do well for sure, whereas confidence and mental calmness can help you sail through.

For those who have difficulty sleeping at night, there's a meditation practice which stresses on gratitude.

While sleeping, think of all good things that happened with you in the day or any good thing you can remember in general. It could be tiniest of thing like a good meal, time spent in the midst of nature etc. Express gratitude for that good thing. If you can't think of something, you can be grateful for even sleeping on a comfortable bed in a sheltered environment. Try to absorb the feeling gradually.

This practice works for me everytime. Calms me down and breaks the negativity

5.4k views

Hello y'alllll!

It's Friday!! I hope everyone's looking forward to the weekend! :P
Would like to pick up on something that@kochikaame said last night. About practicing gratefulness, for sleeping better. It resonated with me so much because something like that has worked with me previously.
When I was at my worst, I had a terrible case of insomnia, and this, as I now understand, was not because of the exam as such but because of all of the noise surrounding it. The thing that worried me the most was not whether I would clear the examination, butwhat it would be likeifI did not clear the examination. What would people think of me, given I hadn't even cleared prelims despite multiple attempts? Would I still be employable elsewhere? Wouldn't people who used to be my peers be ahead of me in their careers? How could I disappoint my family? How could I face up to myself in the mirror, after having given up?
All of these fears had a compounded effect on me. The mornings were terrible, where the fear and deep seated insecurities were so paralyzing that I could get nothing done at all. My fear ofwhat it would mean ifI failedin the exam that hadn't even happened yetwas so great that I allowed it to cause me to fail at life every single day. Life was on autopilot. The absence of control or agency over anything and everything. If the mornings were bad, the evenings were worse. Absolute and utter helplessness.
It got to a point where even the sceptic in me decided to give Heartfulness Meditation a go. And boy, over time, it worked like a charm. The underlying point of any form of meditation is to help you realise the existence of a deep rooted emotion, and put it aside. Detachment does not mean letting go of your emotions, but to recognize their existence and detach yourself from it so that those emotions are not allowed to dominate you. While I cannot claim to have been perfectly successful at this, staying consistent with it improved my life enormously. From a position where I couldn't get 3 hours of proper sleep or 3 hours of study, where I was controlled by a sense of impending doom, I went to waking up at 4 in the morning every single day and putting in at least 8-10 hours a day working on what I wanted to do. Instead of spending my daywishingthat the worst would not happen, I startedworkingon making the best possible outcome happen. Whether any of it will bear fruit, only time will tell of course. But the improvements to my life are here to stay.
My simple point is this. Your fear or sense of anxiety or worry does not necessarily arise from the question of whether you will clear the examination or not. It mostly arises from your ideas of the consequences of not clearing it in this attempt. Those are the worries that keep you up at night. I'm just here to tell you that that is all plain noise. You're suffering miseries that have not even come to be. If anything should keep you up, let it be the hope that you have. Let it stem from the faith you have in yourself. Sunday is only about you and those 100/200 questions. Everything else surrounding it- your performances in mocks, the idea that UPSC is a diabolical machine which attempts to trick you into wrong answers or that it is unpredictable, 12  tips/tricks/hacks/shortcuts to clear prelims) is not real. UPSC is not out to get you. In fact, it does not give a  shit about you or your preparation. Apply your head, act like a rational person, focus on the things you think  you need to, and above all, keep calm. :)
I hope you have a great day.

You are absolutely right. I've been practicing meditation and gratitude for the last year and it had made me realise how beautiful life is and how 90% of our worries are avoidable.

4.7k views
@all_is_well I largely practice Vipassana/mindfulness. I read a book 'Mindfullness in Plain English' which is by a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk to get started. Further, I used an app 'Ten Percent Happier' for a month. I learnt some other techniques as well using that app, somewhat similar to what Patootie had talked about which include gratitude and loving kindness. As of now, I am somewhat flexible regarding my approaches, depending on the situation.

5.7k views
@Rookie Absolutely. Also, there are always good things happening around us. The issue is that our mind clings on to negativity while ignoring all the good things in our life as well as surroundings.

All of us should start enjoying and absorbing small moments of joy. For instance, observing trees and the whole ecosystem it sustains including birds, butterflies etc is something I enjoy watching and I am sure most people would.

@Patootie exactly friend. Most of us have gone through NCRB data sometime. Lots of crimes and injustices happen in India (as well as the world) on a daily basis. It's not that things were great earlier and suddenly everything's gone crazy because a case got a lot of media attention.

The solution to these problems (which we should discuss after Prelims) isn't death penalty or outrage/hastags. Rather, such issues require a multi dimensional approach, which civil servants are capable of implementing at a certain level.

5.2k views
@dragon_rider Absolutely. Most of today's people would be in horror seeing how bad things used to be 400-500 years back, times of wars and invasions. I can't even imagine how it was when guys like Timur, Nadir Shah etc. raided our country and massacred people.
Heck we don't need to go that far. In 1947, our literacy rate was 12%. However flawed we are as a nation, we have made a lot of progress. As I said in a previous comment, there are always positives too in our country as well as in our personal lives. Sometimes it's good to cherish them.

@Challenger_Deep I can vouch for that. It was similar for me in 2018. Just couldn't study well till results were out.

Nonetheless, my advice would be to forget results and start studying for Mains. In case you clear, you'll only have 1.5-2 months.

4.6k views

I find lots of people stressed and dejected in the comments. While it is understandable that bad exam or even not meeting expectations can lead to this, I hope it is temporary for most people.

Not to sound philosophical, but I think all of us should introspect whether our happiness and mental state should be determined by final outcomes or not. Even if someone isn't able to clear prelims, I am sure there's something about the process that he/she must have enjoyed. This applies to life as well. We often fail to achieve what we want to but the process can be so joyful if we learn to find happiness in small things on a daily basis.

I hope all people worried about results are in peace in a few days. Those who are sure of not clearing should take a break for a week or two and introspect in a calm manner (not in an emotional state of mind). It's perfectly alright to not continue with preparation and for those who want to, it's always good to re-assess what went right and wrong. Learning from mistakes is one of the most important things in life.

Always remember that 'This too shall pass'.

Why are people spending so much mental energy discussing questions till now? What's done is done. Those who have even minimal chance should start preparing and those who don't should take a break and introspect about the path ahead.

Discussing here isn't going to help anyone at all. All it does is give anxiety, stress and worries, none of which is helpful in anyway irrespective of the exam outcome.
