SFG – How it works

  • Select Focus Group (SFG) is a small group of students who are selected by ForumIAS every year for coaching them to clear the UPSC Prelims Examination. Every single candidate selected and retained consistently in the group with Top ranks has cleared the Prelims examination in the past.
  • 100 Students will be selected for the Select Focus Group, through the SFG Entrance Test, who will be required to report at 7AM every day 6 days a week to write an hour-long test based on a pre-planned syllabus, followed by a discussion on the same.
  • Candidates who are unable to make it to the SFG, will be maintained in a Reserve List, who can also write the tests. Candidates who couldn't clear the cutoff and are unable to make it into both SFG and RLG can register for the 2nd Entrance Test.
  • Tests are conducted daily and results are provided within 8 hours of test with Name and Rank list for candidates and parents to evaluate their daily performance. On the basis of rankles, about 50% of bottom performing students from SFG are migrated to the reserve list on a weekly basis, and an equal number of students from reserve list (RLG) are moved into SFG.
  • The decision of the management in this regard is final and not subject to dispute. Please note that this migration is done not keeping in mind the overall merit list but moving away bottom 50% from SFG and picking up an equal number of people from RLG.
  • Thus those who may be getting more than RLG students, but are bottom 50 in SFG will be moved to RLG.
  • Every month, the bottom 20% or so non-performing students are eliminated from the program to maintain the quality of competition.
  • All candidates writing the CSE 2021 are eligible to apply for the entrance test.
  • This year we introduce some changes as to how we conduct the SFG exam. Please note that changes that we bring are always in response to the examination pattern, the student feedback and our own learning with respect to how to best enable a serious candidate to clear the exam.

SFG Level 2 (Advanced)

  • SFG Level 2 is for people who have completed the reading and revision of the basic books and are now ready to take on the exam. The objective of the SFG Level 2 is as below:
  • Developing problem-solving skills for solving analytical, conceptual and thought based questions.
  • Developing skills to solve questions based on the application of the reading that they have done for Level 1
  • Mastering the art of handling questions from unknown areas and applying concepts from their wider reading which is relevant for the Civil Services Prelims Examination.
  • Developing time management skills, and being through with the syllabus
  • Providing a reliable, time-bound framework for revision just before the examination.

Application Procedure

@Alibaba Do you need help or your query is resolved?

Consider the following statements:

1. The Preamble was enacted after the entire Constitution was already enacted.

2. All the provisions of the Constitution of India came into force from 26th January, 1950.

3. The date mentioned in the preamble is the date when the Constitution was adopted, enacted and enforced.

Which of the statements given above is/are incorrect?

a 1 only
b 2 only
c 3 only
d 2 and 3 only

Isnt the second statement correct, from 26th Jan, 1950 finally all the provisions came into force, some came into force earlier in 1949 some on 1950, so finally all came into force on this day. I guess there is ambiguity in the statement.
Where we can check rank and other fellow aspirants marks for comparison purpose ??
@Azkaban the answer is in your statement. few provisions came into force in 1949 and rest (not all) in 1950

@batman010827054 afaik they would be posting the rank list in an excel sheet in sfg channel

@Azkaban yup not enforced completely. the question doesn't mention partial so cant assume

Hi all, this is my first attempt at CSE and I have joined the SFG program. Just wanted to know what a decent score is in the SFGs - consistently being able to maintain scores near that mark giving you a reasonable shot at clearing prelims?

I received mail to join RLG2021

i cudnt join and pay on time

can I join it now ?

@srvac not able to rank list in excel format.
Though i am able to find my rank and percentile but not able to find the performances of other fellow aspirants.

Thanks a lot. Issue was sorted the same evening.
Thanks again

I am not sure if this is the right thread to raise doubts related to SFG-2 questions but in today's test (Day_2) Q11

Which of the following laws cannot be invalidated even if they violated Fundamental Rights?

1. Taking over of any property by the State.

2. Amalgamations of two or more Public Sector Companies.

3. Premature cancellation of mining leases by the State government.

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

a 1 and 2 only
b 2 and 3 only
c 1 and 3 only
d 1, 2 and 3

It says ans to be D, but Laxmi says that state govt laws w.r.t 31-A are not immune from JR unless they are reserved for Prez consideration and have received his assent.
So ans should be "A" IMO.

@forumiasacademy  My name is not there in today's ranklist. Please look into this and get back at the earliest possible

@Abhishek007 You can check your "username" in the rank list.

Test 4 (03/04/2021) - CSAT - Q14

Shouldn't the answer be option 'c' ?

The passage has the following line : "When two or three different systems claim that they contain the revelation of the very core and center of truth and the acceptance of it is the exclusive pathway to heaven, conflicts are inevitable."

@forumiasacademy @Thinker @root - not sure which handle to tag.

Test 4 (03/04/2021) - CSAT - Q12

Kindly look into this question. The framing of the question is not proper, it misses a "not"..

Moreover, the answer should not be option "D"- All of the above, as option C is clearly wrong.

Test 4 (03/04/2021) - CSAT - Q19

Shouldn.t the answer to this question be option 'c' ?

This is thr exact line from the passage : "..we find that the prices of protective foods (edible oils, pulses, sugar, meat, fish, etc.) have been rising more sharply than those of cereals on account of inadequate supply response to the increase in demand."

@root Can we pin this thread. It is not visible and had to scroll down a lot to find it, unlike previous SFG Discussion threads that were quite active.
