ForumIAS Select Focus
Group (SFG) is a program designed on three parameters of a) discipline, b) rigorous
and c) revision. Many of students who joined ForumIAS SFG were able to cross
the Prelims hurdle for the very first time. While many students who write mains
and appear for interview join SFG for a quick revision of prelims
syllabus.
SFG has been able to keep up with dynamism of UPSC paper by striking a rich balance between static and dynamic content as well as ensuring conceptual development of every subject. Our performance can be validated with more than 2000+ selections in 2022 through our SFG Test series, we are hereby announcing SFG LEVEL 1 for the 5th year as one of our most innovative programs for successfully cracking the Prelims Examination.
The Select Focus
Group test series has been designed exactly to the demand of the Prelims
examination. In Level 1 we will focus on:
1. Developing
the art of solving prelims questions helping consolidate and revise
knowledge base.
2. It will cover all the NCERTs as the
primary source, in addition will also supplement questions from the secondary
source mentioned in the timetable.
3. Focus ondeveloping analytical acumen through interlinked and multi
- dimensional questions.
4. Focusing onpattern and difficulty which is similar to UPSC
prelims paper.
5. We will be covering comprehensivelyboth static and current affairs portion for
Prelims 2023.
6. 5 Previous Year Questions will be covered in each test, to accustom the students towards the type of questions asked by UPSC.
13th December Update: 1. The
result of SFG 2023 Level-1 Entrance Test-2 has been announced. If you
participated you can check it on your registered mail id. In case you have not
received your score on your mail, please check junk/spam folder of your mailbox
or mail to Mr. Farejul at farej@flaviant.com. 2. It
is hereby informed to all the students selected for SFG Program that please
choose your Test Mode and Test Centre carefully. Once the payment is done then
it is irreversible. The Fees for Patna, Hyderabad and Mukherjee nagar Centres
are less than others due to less logistical cost on these Centres. 10th December Update:

SFG – How it
works
- Select
Focus Group (SFG) is a small group of students who are selected by
ForumIAS every year for coaching them to clear the UPSC Prelims
Examination.
- Every
single candidate selected and retained consistently in the group with Top ranks
has cleared the Prelims examination in the past.
- 100
Students will be selected for the Select Focus Group, through the SFG
Entrance Test, who will be required to report at 7AM every day 5 days a
week to write an hour-long test based on a pre-planned syllabus, followed
by a discussion on the same.
- Candidates
who are unable to make it to the SFG, will be maintained in a Reserve
List, who can also write the tests. Candidates who couldn’t clear the
cutoff and are unable to make it into both SFG and RLG can register for
the 2nd Entrance Test.
- Tests
are conducted daily, and results are provided within 8 hours of the test
with Name and Rank list for candidates to evaluate their daily
performance. On the basis of ranks, about 50% of bottom-performing students
from SFG are migrated to the reserve list on a weekly basis, and an equal
number of students from reserve list (RLG) are moved into SFG.
- The
decision of the management in this regard is final and not subject to
dispute. Please note that this migration is done not keeping in mind the
overall merit list but moving away bottom 50% from SFG and picking up an
equal number of people from RLG.
- Thus,
those who may be getting more than RLG students, but are bottom 50 in SFG
will be moved to RLG.
- Every
month, the bottom 20% or so non-performing students are eliminated from
the program to maintain the quality of competition.
- All
candidates writing the CSE 2023 are eligible to apply for the entrance
test.
- This
year we introduce some changes as to how we conduct the SFG exam. Please
note that changes that we bring are always in response to the examination
pattern, the student feedback, and our own learning with respect to how to
best enable a serious candidate to clear the exam.

Application
Procedure
- The program will commence from 26th December 2022,
admission to which will be entrance-based. The 2nd Entrance Test will be
conducted on11th December 2022in both online and
offline mode. The results of the Entrance Test will be announced by 16th December 2022.
- Admission to the SFG and RLG are based on the
rank of the candidate in the merit list of the SFG Entrance Test. Students
can apply for the program by registering for the Entrance Test by paying a
fee of Rs.700+ GST.Candidates can register by visiting https://academy.forumias.com/sfg/ The candidate must appear for the entrance test
on the designated date and time, subsequent to which he/she will be
admitted to the Select Group or the Reserve List.
- 100 students will be selected for SFG - 50 from
online mode and 50 from students who gave the test in offline mode in
Delhi, Patna and Hyderabad Centres. The remaining students will be selected for
RLG. Students can switch from online to the offline mode or vice versa
before attempting the first test. The ranklist of online and offline
students will be published separately.
- The candidate must pay the program fee as per the
group he/she is allocated.
Here are some updates with respect to the SFG Entrance Test:
- The test will be of 1 hour's duration. It will have both GS and CSAT questions.
- There will be 50 questions. For every correct question, there will be 2 marks, and for incorrect questions, there will be a negative marking of -0.67
- It is expected that candidates will have gone through the basic books and are aware of the concepts across different subjects.
- For GS part, you can expect a judicious mix of questions from Polity (10 Questions), Economy (9 Questions), Modern History (9 Questions) and Indian geography (6 Questions). For Current Affairs (6 Questions), questions will be asked from the last 3 months from August, September and October of 2022.
- For CSAT part, a total of 10 questions from Reading Comprehension, Reasoning, and Aptitude will be asked. The previous year's question paper from 2013 can be used as a reference point for preparing these topics.
- The entrance test will challenge your problem-solving aptitude within the given time constraint.
Note: Admissions
to the SFG / RLG Group will only be on the basis of the merit position of the
candidate in the entrance test.
No admission will be granted to the candidate without appearing for the Entrance Test.
We have given it a lot of thought, and every year, we do want to revise it. But then it has cascading effect of creating new problems. Also, if we dont make you study by 7AM, we have lost the day.
We know we may be able to get more students with convenient timings, but that sacrifice of sleep and comfort zone is needed.

@DM Noted/Gaath Baandh Li. One more question in Level 1 should I focus on mentioned NCERTS or skip em to read Std Books. I do not want to skip but then I also do not want to end up wasting time/failing again by covering NCERTs for 3 months.

Prelims hai to sab kuch hai. Note---If you feel your preparation for Mains is majorly lacking, you have two choice – either take a drop and prepare full throttle for it – and take responsibility for taking such a drop and time – or focus on clearing the Prelims with a margin such that you are able to immediately start preparation for the Mains after the prelims. People have – in the past – and in the future, will clear Mains only by studying for 3 months or so – by committing themselves 100% for it.
December-January-February: The transition period of Mains to Prelims preparation.
This period of December-January-February seems most difficult for thousands of sincere aspirants as they are confused whether to focus on prelims or mains preparation. If both need to be done simultaneously then students face lack of clarity about how to create balance between the two. In this blogpost, we try to observe some points to bring focus and clarity in the preparation in these crucial moths.
It’s the end of the year, yet another year. For some, it brought happiness and for some it brought struggles. Both categories of people should be happy. For first category of people, their years of efforts were rewarded. For the second category of people, you have become stronger because of your struggles (remember the cocoon-butterfly story).
The new year is going to be about hope. It’s about gaining more strength to face the struggles. It’s about learning strategy and tactics to counter the new challenges effectively. So, in this blogpost, some specific suggestions have been given for this period.
Students should ponder over following suggestions.
1.Avoid peer pressure: Everybody is in different stage of preparation. Some may have or going to appear in interview or mains, some are going to give their first prelims and some have failed in prelims earlier. So, time allotted for prelims and mains can vary among students. Students should avoid peer pressure in this respect.
2.Something is better than nothing: More than thinking about prelims or mains, students should do something. In a content-centric exam, you never know which knowledge or perspective is going to be handy in the exam hall. Questions from Post-independence and world history are also coming in the Prelims. Similarly, Bose-Eistein condensate or McBride Commission
questions which can be covered most probably from prelims perspective have been asked in Mains.
3.One hour trick for optional: As far as optional is concerned, if someone has made some short notes, especially for topics like fossils and genetics in Anthropology, thinkers, public policy, personnel and financial administration in Public Administration or Contract, Tort and IPC in Law, diagrams in the optional or have isolated things in some chapters, they can devote 1 hour in the morning, specifically for cramming purpose at least till January.
4.Strengthen your strength: For GS, again revision of notes or model answers of good and static questions can be done for 1 hour in the morning at least till January. If someone is writing test series or attending any classes, he/she can customize and prioritize.
5.Prioritize-Optimize-Maximize: Lastly, if someone is unable to focus on anything i.e., puzzled whether to study for prelims or mains, just understand one simple thing. A person can attempt mains only after clearing prelims.
Students who are puzzled would be able to devote 50% of their focus on prelims and rest on mains besides taking undue stress. Just after prelims, especially in the evening of 28th May, if you are scoring good marks in prelims and fully sure of clearing prelims, you would be able to devote 100% of your energy on the mains afterwards besides the extra advantage of having momentum and motivation. The conclusion is,with good temperament, you can cover mains topics in 10 days after prelims equivalent to what you are going to cover now in next 30 days with a puzzled mindset.
So, these are just broad ideas for current conundrum of prelims vs mains debate in this transition period. Rest, everyone is the master of one’s own destiny. Micro-goals and baby steps, these two things are going to be the key. Remember the quote,‘life is hard by yard and cinch by inch’.
