@NajdorfLast year I had 47 marks in the first Abhyas and in the Prelims I ended up scoring 110+. Certain perspective I can give you with respect to prelims and giving mock tests:

  •  Give mocks tests with the view of how you fair when you don't know things ->Like questions which you didn't know or hadn't read ever or read long back what was your thinking process because on the final day a large majority of questions will be of a similar vein
  • Study for prelims as much possible but don't miss out on PYQs
  • Specific for Abhyas ->If you haveproperlyread the current affairs magazine and still missing out on things, need of the hour is ensuring proper revision (static is sometimes very random, don't fret but rather note down stuff that is wrong and makes part of static portion)
  • Considering you're anxious with regard to the exam ->Try meditating and also remember ->a slight level of stress is desirable but not anxiety
Good video on why you should try meditating:

@Najdorf i think its not a bad score.. a few correct questions and it can  even become a good score.. the paper was difficult keeping with the abhyaas tradition..

Thank you so much for the reality check, I used to criticize the commission a lot, which one should never do while preparing. Talked about it with @GaneshGaitonde. Also, that feeling of grass is greener the other side made me work less hard - be it getting a global experience or working in corporate. Need to push myself a lot. Also being emotionally resilient is very important aspect of this preparation as@tedmosby wrote.

I will tell you how to avoid getting distracted by foreign / startup / other ideas. Tell yourself there has to be pursuit of excellence. You may not value the job that comes at the end of the exam, but what is stopping you from pursuing excellence in what you are doing?

There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be doing your best, ( even if you don't want to do it ) if you are doing something.

Show copy to@Rashmirathi or@GaneshGaitonde or anyone experienced. And write down what you have studied at least once before Mains.

The game is on.

Absolutely yes, work hard on each part of the answer writing. Since this struck the right cord, let me brief you my story. I have written 4 CSE mains and 3 Forest mains and never been able to make it! Reason? I targeted bare minimum marks in GS as my optional and essay were sorted. I used to score with little effort average or above average marks in these with essay 110-120 each time(this time 117) and optional( 260-300, this time 291). Despite this I have not qualified for interview even once. Reason? In GS i always get marks between 260-280 and never improved upon answer writing aspects thinking it's good enough to get into 350s. In first mains i got only 267 in GS and four years down the line, in fourth mains i got only 265. So please do not curse commission or be reluctant to your GS preparation. Prepare it relentlessly ticking all the boxes. Sadly I have to say goodbye to UPSC since attempts are over now:(

@Neyawn insights on this please

This was my first mains. The GS marks are low because of poor content. I attempted all questions. However, I had very little writing practice and hence wrote layman answers. Even had to leave some pages blank.

In the second essay, I chose the topic of "Mathematics is the music of reason" as I knew many examples relating to mathematicians' stories and structured the essay around that. In that process, I did not explore sufficient dimensions of the topic. The first essay was also likely at best average, as I had not practiced essays. I had written barely 5 essays before mains.

In Mathematics, I have very strong reason to believe that the marks in paper 1 are very less than I deserve. I was expecting 150+, as I had a correct attempt of ~185 marks. The marks in paper 2 can be improved with better coverage of physics topics and improved accuracy. I had a correct attempt of ~175 marks in paper 2.

I will seek the academy and @Neyawn 's guidance to at least reach the threshold in GS and essays.

Also, I will be changing my test series for Mathematics. I am getting equally good reviews about Avinash Sir's, Mathocrat and Aryabhatt. Can the community members please help with nuanced strengths and lacunas in them?

Duniye me ek se ek tej log Hain. Today I met one student from Hindi medium. He was from mukherji nagar center. In a time when people are struggling to get 80-90 marks in gs paper 1, he is getting 110.

I didn't believe him. Here is the scorecard.

I have not seen many of my brightest students do so well.

( Just hope it's not edited , it's so incredible )
