I always thought Society in GS1 is my strong area. But struggled to write answers in Mains 2022.
what we usually study: problems of women, poverty, urbanization, secularism, regionalism and other standard topics. Questions in Test series are usually direct and I scored well in this section.
But in UPSC exam,
Topics are difficult: Tier 2 cities & New middle class, salience of sect, globalization and new technology; And last year - population education, Gig economy & Women etc.
UPSC questions are one layer deeper than Test series questions. And are have a new dimension .
How to prepare for Society? What new sources to study to cover this extra level of deepness of topics? Do we have to look for any sociology material?

Can you put some specific questions that you found difficult to answer. Questions of society are fairly open ended and will require some understanding. They are a great leveller too.

I thought I was good at Society among GS1 topics. But I found my performance was better in History + Culture after analyzing.
But these are expected issues. They require reading the newspaper regularly, and some observation. May not be possible through magazines.

Dont bullshit.You can not expect these questions, nor can you answer the way the UPSC question setter wants.This is why I repeatedly tell people that UPSC coaching is not only utterly useless, also counterproductive. They know know nothing, and they misguide you. They thrive only through brainwashing advertisements on The Hindu front page.

Gentleman, yesterday I went through gs 1 society paper and tried to recollect what I have written in paper. I was blank in almost all question and went into panic and anxiety mode.
My sources for society were ncert+FORUM book on society+ Test series question +current affair magazine. Due to time constraint and retention capacity of brain, it is always suggested to restrict one' s resources.
In gs 1 paper, most candidates find history and geography area as area of comfort due to preparation in prelims. Society is most neglected part of syllabus which is usually addressed during mains break and might be the cause of discomfort for many( including me)
Usually sociology optional candidates find this section easy, you can consult them for inputs.

I faced similar trouble despite 4-5 years of preparation. All I can suggest you specifically is writing a lot of answers & exposing yourself to as many question types as possible . And I am not sure as still, there might be tough questions
But the problem is If you over invest, there are chances UPSC might set an easy paper. If anyone would’ve increased sources based on GS 3 2021, there are chances that one would not get much returns in 2022 GS 3 paper
Plus only those who have written mains can feel how difficult it was to structure the sect question and attempt GS 1 as a whole too (it was for me at least). Also, please don’t expect anyone who hasn’t written mains to empathise with you.
And at the cost of sounding disrespectful, if anyone in their early attempts is reading this, the coachings have only two answers to UPSC’s unpredictability & madness ALWAYS (notice this) : NCERT & Newspapers

I feel I can suggest something
I have sociology as optional
This year almost all the questions had reference to sociological terms: sect, family, tribes, new middle class, secularism
I would think it would have been really difficult for many candidates who are not aware of these terms
My suggestion would be to go through Sociology NCERT 12th STD.
And you can have a look at essential sociology book by Nitin Sangwan - it's a summary of all topics of sociology optional ( just refer the part 2 of the book which is about Indian society)
You can ignore the thinkers part and just refer to those parts which are in the syllabus or have been asked in PYQs
I don't know if it will work but I hope it helps :)
