The Civils Mains result has been declared. This thread is for sharing your grief , joy , mixed feelings - absolutely anything and everything.
Oh man. I thought this was limited to “Can I see a picture of your study room for CSE?” questions on Quora. There are complete blogs dedicated to this?
My study room looks like a murder just happened there.
There you go.
thesleepyhead,
Taking cues from this…
Never have I ever stuck maps on walls of my room.
This can be that unpopular of a practice among CSE people as some of my friends make it out to be, is it?
In my upsc nibbi days (thanks@SergioRamos!) I bought maps and stuck them all over with double sided tape.
My brother would sometimes wipe his hands on them. Then they tore and I took them down. The tape ruined my walls and now they look hideous in mock interviews.
I never used them either, I was too lazy to stand there so I used the atlas like a normal person.
Mere paas toh globe bhi tha. Maaro mujhe.
Humare paas bhi tha. Hum kya kam hai. The same globe he had in Aspirants 😂 the cheapest on amazon
Here's the twist in my story. One of my seniors before leaving gave it to me and said, "hum toh nai kar paaye, tum kar lena UPSC." Tab mujhe laga tha jaise main globe nai Filmfare ki trophy hath mei le ke khada hu.
Cut to 2021, yehi globe kabhi kabhi sar pe marne ka mann karta hai. :p
@DHARNA I bet you should hold aDharnafor getting the study table you want and avoiding chores. So that you, of all the people, can also make an insta video about your dream productive day.Documenting your study routine. With a camera in your hand.:D
And how I thought I would be spared on forum 😂
Right from roll calls in schools to kejri making this word to come as a front headline, it’s been 23 years of realising the fact how a missing ‘A’ could ruin your name xD
btw it’s Dh-aa-r-na :)
@thesleepyhead @Patootie @SergioRamos
Here is a screenshot for all of us to contemplate about how boring our own UPSC life is. My idea of a break is usually coffee, TV Series, and Floyd in the loudest possible sound level.
So 3rd world country like.P.S: I have no shame :D

@Villanelle ,@Patootie ,@whatonly
Really?
P.S: My memes are ugly as I make them using thesame appI use for taking screenshots.
I feel so hesitant to draw flowcharts in my answers, even bullet points seem adventurous at times (but I do stick to them). Are flowcharts really the holy grail of answer writing? There's no way the examiner still finds them impressive or novel at this point right? What do the senpais who've written Mains before think?
I am no senpai, but I don't think you need to force it.
Sometimes it just is the most convenient way, especially when you have too much content on the topic and you can't afford to waste time and space on writingeverythingas points, so you pick something that would make a good flowchart and draw one.
Then again sometimes you have too little content so you fill the space by writing the same thing again in flowchart form :p
Same goes for those hub and spoke thingies too.
And how I thought I would be spared on forum 😂

Fair enough, seems like one of those things that should make sense after enough practice. Thank you globe-senpai.

Whenever I digress from paragraph writing, I feel bad inside, like I have committed some crime. I have stretched myself to going for the pointwise format, not more shorthand than that.
The story of the flowchart is based on the popular yet utterly stupid myth that UPSC paper checkers do not spend much time on copies, are careless in that regard and the flowchart is to break the monotony of the checker and help them find keywords quicker. Even class 10th Copies are checked with more rigour( in 3 rounds ), so yeah UPSC does pay minute attention.
Now coming to the writing part. Answer writing or any writing for me is essentially persuasion, but without the help of our body language, emotions which we can express when we face the other. That is why writing is difficult in the 1st place. Therefore, the logic behind any of our assertions in writing should be very clear and articulated to convince the reader. This is not possible in flowchart form as words used in it are extremely few as compared to paragraph or points.
A wise man is someone who expresses a lot in minimum words but a flowchart is an extreme form and extremes are never good.
The examiner gives us 250 words to test our wisdom. The target is not to write in as few words as possible but to be precise and articulate.
Goodhart's Law is expressed as: “When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.”
Flowcharts and all those hubs and spoke and chariots are a prime example of Goodhart's law.
PS: Strictly my opinion. I was unsuccessful in mains.
Me to my mom : I am thinking I should make videos on youtube. (just to hear what she say)
mom: Do you have time?
me: People are making videos while studying.
Mom: Koi zarurat nahi hai. Logo ko kyu batana kitna padh rhe ho. Log nazar laga dete hain.
Couldn't counter this.
Mom=1, Me=0
Lol!
If a measure becomes a target it ceases to be a good measure
