50 Days of Must Read News Articles – What we are doing & Your Feedback

It was on March 20  that we started the Newspaper Must Read News Articles 2.0 on ForumIAS.com/home.  Today, it has been 50 days since the initiative was launched.

We would like to tell you what we did, and would also like to ask you how you feel about the initiative that we took. This may take 2 minutes of your time, but this will help us serve you better.

What got us Started?

Reading the newspaper is central to the Civil Services Examination Process. The Newspaper is your textbook as far as Civil Services is concerned. To make matters better or worse, this text book has a new edition. Daily.

The Newcomer Dilemma

The biggest problem that a newcomer faces is :-

  • How to select which articles to read?
  • Is The Hindu enough or should I also check out Indian Express? And Business Line? And ET?
  • If I make notes, it takes lot of time. If I don’t make notes, I cannot revise.
  • Should I make daily notes, or should I keep article cuttings in a file?

The I-have-seen-it-all Candidate Problem

Who has a tougher time reading the newspaper than a newbie? A prelims cleared, mains qualified, Interview appeared candidate, trust me. The big issue with them is – wait for it – Reading the newspaper daily.

If you are one of those, you know how much you need archives, because you, year after year reading the Hindu, still miss it on certain days.

We solved it for the newbie. Here is how.

  • How to select which articles to read?
At ForumIAS, we take extra care to ensure that we do not miss a Must Read Article. So that you do not miss it, when you read our Daily Must Read News Articles.
  • Is The Hindu enough or should I also check out Indian Express? And Business Line? And ET?
I would say, The Hindu is good enough. The Indian Express may seem to have more juice on some days. But  if you want the juice ( and not the pulp), we select editorials and columns from IE and give it to you. You can safely ignore the mundane news that is already covered by the Hindu
  • If I make notes, it takes lot of time. If I don’t make notes, I cannot revise.
True.  So here is what I will suggest you – Make notes from the important articles . On pen and paper or online. Worry not about revision as you can always come back and see all the news articles  of the day on ForumIAS. In fact, most of the Mains appeared and interview appearing candidates are going to cover newspaper at one go , and not daily. We don’t recommend it for newbies though. The best practice is read daily.

What in store for the oldtimers

Archives. If you have missed a day’s newspaper – worry not. You can access our archives anytime and read Newspaper of any day that you like. If you are working, you can read while travelling on your mobile.

What you requested

A few things that we kept in mind when we came up with this new initiative was:-

  •  We should cover the Hindu 100%. So that you cover Hindu 100%
  • We should provide a way where users can subscribe via email.
  • Some of our members love the Indian Express. Our members wanted that we provide quality editorials from Indian Express as well.
  • Some people wanted a business newspaper to be covered as well.

What we did

After going through everyone ‘s suggestions, we did the following:-

  • Everyday, we go through The Hindu closely and make sure we do not miss anything good. Not even 1%
  • We post it now on ForumIAS.com/home.
  • We were able to provide a email subscription where users were able to receive the update as soon as the News Articles of the Day have been posted.

3000 Subscribers. And still counting

We kept the page hidden and waited for word of mouth publicity, which, in less than 50 days has crossed 3000 subscribers base. We shall now link it on our main page, shortly. ( In case you want an email alert as soon as the news article is posted , do sign up by clicking here.

Too many articles? The big question.

A lot of users have asked us one question – you provide too many articles. This consumes a lot of time.

Well, the truth is, you need to segregate:-

  • The Read Only Article – But may not make notes – This includes the National and other news. You should know these events. Usually knowing is enough but remembering may not be required.
  • The Make-Notes-Articles – You can and should make notes out of the editorial of The Hindu and IE. The Hindu eds covers the issues which are asked in UPSC. The IE Eds and columns add extra value.

We hope we have solved at least some of you problems. Let us know what you feel about this initiative in the comments below.

Thanks for the initiative. I am solely dependent on this only. I would suggest you should also include articles from ToI, ET etc. On a fortnightly basis you can include important articles from Frontline, EPW etc. This way it will become one stop solution for all current affairs worries for aspirants.

Please don’t delay articles. Sometimes no articles are published even for 2 – 3 days.

    Thanks again 🙂

  17. Could we have a static tree-like structure of category pages for news events like so –

    News

    |-Polity
    |-|-Judicial reform
    |-|-Electoral reform
    |-|-Constitutional provision exercised in recent times
    |-|-…..
    |
    |-IR
    |-|-Indo-China
    |-|-indo-Pak
    |-|-Indo-US
    |-|-…..
    |
    |-Economy
    |-|-Inflation
    |-|-WTO
    |-|-GST
    |-|-….
    |
    |-Environment
    |-|-Paris / Kyoto
    |-|-Updates
    |-|-Pollution
    |-|-….

    |-etc

You could keep on adding links to news articles as you’re doing right now (and removing redundant items) to these as updates to maintain a ‘gist on this topic as of now’ kind of a spread. A tree layout would be very helpful for both beginners and returning seniors. You can even (later on) add short summaries if you feel like. This is something that no website has ever tried to do. I feel it could be novel and a USP for us.

Guys you all are doing great job….keep it coming always.. the only thing which you can do is to may be add some important article from business standard..Since insightsonindia’s secure 2015 also includes question from business standard hence may be one or two selective articles from this newspaper may add to the glitter of your initiative..

  26. Very good initiative, covers a good number of news and editorials, saves lot of time n vey helpful while on the move

  27. indeed it is an calculative and productive effort put by u for aspirents like me, undoubtedly it saves time in a great ammount, but can u ensure us that what all articles u pickup fm all respective newspapers are sufficient so as to one has not to look for anyother sources (like taking a look at the hindu especially lest any imp article is not missed) , if u can ensure that ur efforts would be matchless and pls fram questions fm all the articles so that every one of us could get the clear picture abt the article that abt what it was, pls pls pls fram question for pre and mains both, i hope u will accept my and all my friends who hav commented here on , specific needs that we want everyday to be done fm ur side…..pls reply . i will be eagerly waiting for ur response on this……thankyou , keep it up , best of luck ,, i appriciate ur efforts for taking the views of ur followers….

  28. That v surely miss out on newspapers someday is a fact no aspirant can deny. This initiative is just a boon to e-education for cse aspirants.please continue this as websites like yours are completely disciplined with content and daily job. Also if u can keep your secure compilations in pace it your website will be the most awaited academy for civil servants.god bless.

Thanks for this completely awesome initiative! It has helped me cut down the amount of time that I had to devote to search and classify articles as important and unimportant. The fact that you cover The Hindu completely and include important articles from The Indian Express and Livemint implies that we get the best articles of the day without any effort. This in turn greatly speeds up the process of making notes and revising them.

I would personally have also liked a weekly inclusion of important Editorials/Opinions from Business Standard since the quality of its articles on Economy, Banking, Infrastructure etc. is excellent, but that is just a small suggestion. The initiative in its current form is amazing and should be continued as it is a big help to many.

I have been following the “Today’s Must Read Newspaper” article for quite some time now and let me tell you I have never been at such an ease in going through newspapers. You’ve not only solved the dilemma of reading different newspapers but also helped a working aspirant like me to get to read the important news without going through the time-consuming process (at least for me) of selecting articles from so many news. I would take this opportunity to not only thank you but also congratulate you for such a wonderful initiative. A working aspirant like me truly understands the value of this initiative. Thank you once again!!!

Thanku very much this initiative as I am preparing in distant area where I don’t get the Hindu news paper (although I have subscribed it by post); By must read article I am able to cover up daily news in quickest possible time.

  47. you are doing a great job but u are just following the herd ie. doing same things that is being done by various other websites.I really miss ur articles that u used to write on issues,I used to visit ur site daily but now…
I hope u start writing soon me and my many other frnds visit ORN just to check whether there are any ready made material on the contemporary issues earlier ur website was enought(+Mrunal) but now both of u have stopped.
Though we can read from news paper but reading news paper+searching history/issues related to article takes time and here where u people come handy and if u also stop writing then we would have no motivation to come to ur site on daily basis.
