It was on March 20 that we started the Newspaper Must Read News Articles 2.0 on ForumIAS.com/home. Today, it has been 50 days since the initiative was launched.
We would like to tell you what we did, and would also like to ask you how you feel about the initiative that we took. This may take 2 minutes of your time, but this will help us serve you better.
What got us Started?
Reading the newspaper is central to the Civil Services Examination Process. The Newspaper is your textbook as far as Civil Services is concerned. To make matters better or worse, this text book has a new edition. Daily.
The Newcomer Dilemma
The biggest problem that a newcomer faces is :-
- How to select which articles to read?
- Is The Hindu enough or should I also check out Indian Express? And Business Line? And ET?
- If I make notes, it takes lot of time. If I don’t make notes, I cannot revise.
- Should I make daily notes, or should I keep article cuttings in a file?
The I-have-seen-it-all Candidate Problem
Who has a tougher time reading the newspaper than a newbie? A prelims cleared, mains qualified, Interview appeared candidate, trust me. The big issue with them is – wait for it – Reading the newspaper daily.
If you are one of those, you know how much you need archives, because you, year after year reading the Hindu, still miss it on certain days.
We solved it for the newbie. Here is how.
- How to select which articles to read?
- Is The Hindu enough or should I also check out Indian Express? And Business Line? And ET?
- If I make notes, it takes lot of time. If I don’t make notes, I cannot revise.
What in store for the oldtimers
Archives. If you have missed a day’s newspaper – worry not. You can access our archives anytime and read Newspaper of any day that you like. If you are working, you can read while travelling on your mobile.
What you requested
A few things that we kept in mind when we came up with this new initiative was:-
- We should cover the Hindu 100%. So that you cover Hindu 100%
- We should provide a way where users can subscribe via email.
- Some of our members love the Indian Express. Our members wanted that we provide quality editorials from Indian Express as well.
- Some people wanted a business newspaper to be covered as well.
What we did
After going through everyone ‘s suggestions, we did the following:-
- Everyday, we go through The Hindu closely and make sure we do not miss anything good. Not even 1%
- We post it now on ForumIAS.com/home.
- We were able to provide a email subscription where users were able to receive the update as soon as the News Articles of the Day have been posted.
3000 Subscribers. And still counting
We kept the page hidden and waited for word of mouth publicity, which, in less than 50 days has crossed 3000 subscribers base. We shall now link it on our main page, shortly. ( In case you want an email alert as soon as the news article is posted , do sign up by clicking here.
Too many articles? The big question.
A lot of users have asked us one question – you provide too many articles. This consumes a lot of time.
Well, the truth is, you need to segregate:-
- The Read Only Article – But may not make notes – This includes the National and other news. You should know these events. Usually knowing is enough but remembering may not be required.
- The Make-Notes-Articles – You can and should make notes out of the editorial of The Hindu and IE. The Hindu eds covers the issues which are asked in UPSC. The IE Eds and columns add extra value.
We hope we have solved at least some of you problems. Let us know what you feel about this initiative in the comments below.
