CSAT DAILY MISSION #94

Question 1

You work in a college, and have found a novel solution to an important problem posed by your advisor. However, your advisor sees this as an opportunity for him to get published, downplays the significance of the results, collates a paper and submits it before you are any wiser (the paper acknowledges a discussion with you, but does not include you as an author). You are absolutely clear that this idea was yours, and feel suitably put out. You approach your advisor and complaint, but he empathizes with you and tells you to be a bit quicker with the writeup next time. He tells you, “This is just the way of the world.” What will you do next?

(A) Decide not to leave it there, and approach the Head of the Department.

(B) Approach the Principal of the college with proper evidence, to clarify the matter once and for all.

(C) You start feeling a bit silly, and you drop the matter.

(D) Spread this entire story amongst the students, and try to shame your advisor into doing the right thing.

Question 2

You are the Police Commisioner giving a live interview to the press. The government has recently announced increased salary and allowances for the police department but at the same time also announced redundancies (personnel cuts), which has not gone down well with most of your colleagues. You are aware of the discontent among your subordinates also regarding the same. You are asked your views on the matter. What will you say?

(A) You think that senior police officers should not accept pay rises in these difficult times, thus helping in reducing redundancies.

(B) Explain that politics should not interfere with policing.

(C) Tell the interviewer you do not wish to comment on this issue and tell them they will need to question the government.

(D) That you understand the difficult decisions that are being taken across all public sector organisations, and that the police department also has to sacrifice some people.

Question 3

In the past month, one of your students has shown a major decline in test performance. Though this decline has been ongoing for the past six months it was particularly sharp during the course of the last month. In addition, she started showing disinterest in the classroom, seeming very frustrated with something. Her activities are influencing the atmosphere in the class as she is a popular student and has been topper of the class for the past two terms. What will you do?

(A) Call for a parent-teacher meeting to talk about the situation, and make sure that the student is not there to avoid any embarrassment.

(B) You will not give her special treatment, but treat her like any other child and admonish her whenever she makes a mistake.

(C) You talk to her directly and explain what your concerns are. You try to find what has changed in her life, and help her overcome it.

(D) You will not interfere in her life. She has been doing well for a few years now and everyone has periods where they are not at their best. Part of your job is to be sensitive when this happens.

Question 4

You are the loan disbursing authority in a public sector bank. You have been given a certain target which you have little chances of meeting. Your superior requests you to clear a certain loan proposal. The creditworthiness of the client is low. The financial viability of the project is also not promising. The superior probably knows the client personally, and strongly recommends to you that the loan be granted. How will you handle the situation?

(A) You will pass the loan because the boss is always right.

(B) You will reject the loan.

(C) You will demand an order in writing.

(D) You will try to contact the superior of your superior and bring the situation to his notice.

Question 5

You are a deputy in the office of the tahsildar. It is 5pm and you are on call. A clerk brings you a file and tells you that it needs sanction immediately because it has choked the release of funds. The file has not been signed by the tahsildar for five days and work is getting delayed as a consequence. He asks you to sign on his behalf even as another deputy has just refused to sign it. What would be the best course of action?

(A) Sign the file given the urgency of the matter, and inform the tahsildar at the first opportunity.

(B) Refuse to sign, explaining that if the other deputy has just refused to sign then that must be the correct decision.

(C) Refuse to sign, explaining that only the tahsildar is going to sign it.

(D) Speak to the other deputy as to why he refused to sign it.

N.B. Please note that the official timings for publication of these questions is 11 am daily.

SOLUTIONS TO DAILY CSAT MISSION # 95

1. (A) 2. (D) 3. (D) 4. (D) 5. (A)

Explanations
1. and 2. Because the first sentences of each statement are false, if A says he is with B and F, actually he is not with B or F. So the following table can be drawn, based on the the first part of each statement.

Capture

Looking at A, he is not with B or F. C and D also imply that A is not with them. So, A is with the only person remaining i.e. E. Now looking at the respective second sentences of A and E, it can be concluded that they are chain-snatchers. Next, B is not with C and B is not with F. So B is with D. Looking at the respective second sentences of B and D, it can be concluded that they are kidnappers. This leaves C and F as pickpockets.

3. Originally, Vikram is 15th from left. Therefore there are 14 seats to the left of Vikram’s original seat.
After coming to Vikram’s seat, Naveen will be 25th from the right. Hence, there are 24 seats to the right of Vikram’s original seat.
Total number of seats = 14 + 1 + 24 = 39.

4. During sunset, sun rays come from the west and Lakshmi’s shadow is towards her right. So West is to her left, which means she is facing North. If Lakshmi is be facing north, then Kavya would be facing South.

5. The general rule is: If today is a Wednesday, then this date in the next year will be a Thursday (one day more). But if a 29th February comes in between, then this date in the next year will be a Friday (two days more).
Since 21st February is a Monday in this question, the next 21st February will be a Tuesday (non-leap year given). And four more days after that Tuesday will be a Saturday.

Also admin do we really need ethics questions? They are either without penalty or absent. Solving maths, reasoning or even comprehension questions would be better. Not nitpicking, just a suggestion. Also please start a Mission GS please!
