Newspaper Must Read Articles of The Day – 11 July 2015

Well, it has been raining cats and dogs the entire day here in Delhi, and it meant bad internet connectivity and power cuts. This  newspaper analysis is being done now, at the end of the day, when we have finally managed access to the server. Fortunately, the volume of news is low.

The Hindu

Front Page

  • Modi to visit Pakistan next year: The meeting between the premiers of India and Pakistan on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Ufa, Russia, has produced the announcement that the Indian Prime Minister will visit Islamabad in 2016 for the SAARC summit, although made no commitment on restarting dialogue between the two countries. Ignore all the articles that speculate what could happen, or what to expect, or which people have said something good/bad regarding the accord. Those articles do not give anything substantive.

Opinion/Editorial

  • The Ufa takeaways and reason for hope:  The meeting between the premiers of India and Pakistan on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit has kicked off hope of a resumption to the dialogue process between the two countries.
  • Needed, a new strategy: Not required. It concerns one particular political party.
  • Going after crooked deals: The agreement signed this week by the governments of India and the United States to implement the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) is yet another weapon in India’s war against tax evasion and black money.  The Black Money Act, the Multilateral Competent Authority Agreement (MCAA), and now the FATCA agreement comprise a formidable system aimed at curbing black money.

National

  • PSLV C-28 launches five UK satellites: No need to remember the details. What you need to remember is what this means in the overall progression of India’s space programme, and how our indigenous technology is capable by itself of rivalling the best in the world.
  • Whistle-blowers virtually on their own: Covers a particular case/scam. Not needed.
  • Gujarat and Tamil Nadu lead project clearance in coastal waters: Not needed.

International/World Affairs

  • Athens accepts harsh austerity: Greece has asked for a third bailout since 2010, this time worth $59 billion to help cover its debts until 2018, to sponsor a review of primary surplus targets and a complete “reprofiling” the country’s long-term debt. In return, it has accepted austerity measures like increased VAT, falls in salary, lowering of military funding, privatisation of govt assets, dismantling of tax breaks for many Greek islands etc.
  • Monday the new deadline: Iran and (P5 + 1) powers gave themselves until Monday to reach a nuclear agreement (their third extension in two weeks).

Economy/Business

  • Industrial growth slows in May: Industrial production seems to be slowing down this year, with provisional figures for May showing the index of industrial production’s (IIP) growth at 2.7 per cent, down from 3.4 per cent in April. The fact that the capital goods sector has registered a positive growth, though, is good news for the economy.

Hi guys you are doing a commendable work and thanks, for it is really helpful.

But, have you stopped covering other papers like Indian Express, LiveMint etc as you used to do in the beginning?
If they too were covered, it would have been great..

    Thanks
