Front Page/National

  • RS panel backs majority of GST Bill proposals: It should be a foregone conclusion now that the Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill, meant to introduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST), will be cleared by the Parliament in the current session, after the Rajya Sabha Select Committee has endorsed almost all its provisions.
  • Privacy not a right, Aadhaar legit: Amid the ongoing debate about the use of the Aadhaar card, after the Supreme Court had asked the question of whether making a citizen part with vital personal data under the Aadhaar scheme does not amount to intrusion of privacy, the Centre has replied that privacy is not a Fundamental Right.
  • Rural electrification scheme to be launched: The govt will launch the Deendayal Upadhyaya Rural Electrification Programme on July 25 in Patna. It will replace the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana and aims initially to replace all incandescent bulbs in the country with LED lights in the next three years.

Opinion/Editorial

  • Good in principle, tough to practice: A look into the challenges faced by states while prohibiting the sale of alcohol and drugs, which can also be extrapolated for the entire country.
  • An atonement gone too far: Today, with the Supreme Court voicing an opinion wherever it sees fit, there is a good chance it will produce counter-productive results where the judges do not have enough technical know-how. Plus, it creates a precedent for lower courts and judicial tribunals to get involved in things beyond their jurisdiction.
  • Time to abolish the MRP: A look into the MRP system in India, with its pros and cons. Must read, especially the paragraph listing the five cons of printing the MRP.
  • Has the IIM faculty been sidelined: Over the years, IIM boards (with mostly non-executive members) have assumed sweeping powers, relegating the actual faculty in the institutes to merely followers of their diktats. The IIM Bill might do well to focus on this anomaly, and enable the faculty/teachers to determine the education policy (fees, curriculum, domains, recruitments) of IIMs.

Economy/Business

  • NRIs can invest in NPS: The government will shortly come out with a clarification on the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) guidelines, so that NRIs can now invest in the National Pension System (NPS) to get a social security cover,
  • Final norms for listing start-ups in 10 days: A countrywide Institutional trading platform will allow or start-ups, to get listed in the domestic market and raise funds easily, without them going overseas for such requirements.
