ANKI/Spaced Repetition/Active Recall etc.

Since there seem to be a few people who are interested in such topics I thought we could just create a thread to discuss such things. We can properly go into all of this. After Prelims, of course. Also if anyone has ideas of pre-made decks to make for ANKI post it down below and i'll try to add it to the list.

ANKI PRE-MADE DECK LIST

Historical Organizations and their leaders

Journals/Newspapers and their authors

Ramsar Sites

National Parks

Tiger Reserves

Reports (and their corresponding publishers)

Festivals/Sports/Art etc. and their corresponding state

Great initiative. Will be happy to contribute post prelims.

But before that, probably we should explain or rather make people internalise the philosophy that Active recall, Spaced repetition and Interleaved study are efficient study methods compared to Re-reading, Highlighting and Summarising.

Unless that is done, you won't find a need to use these tools. At the end of the day, they are just tools to use the efficient study philosophy!

Yes of course. We can talk about it in detail after Prelims. I think it's way too late for people not using this stuff to start using it all of a sudden with such little time.

@SergioRamos I'm planning on using Notion (mainly due to its toggle feature) for Mains. This way I can force myself to remember the various points like the data, way forward, committee recommendations etc.

@dragon_rider Yes mate. I also want to use it. Was looking for someone to guide on that too post prelims.
All I have heard are raving reviews for Notion.

Any Notion users?

Used evernote the whole year. Ignored Notion, just got familiar with it last month, much much better. The same thing, not the right time to shift platforms. So post prelims will be 'moving' to notion. Hope can't help you there but can struggle together 😅.

And also thanks for this thread, looking to learn better methods to learn post prelims. Just for starters Is Super-Memo available only on windows or there's some way to use it on ipad/androids?

@dragon_rider I know Notion but what’s the toggle feature?

You can set the toggle feature so that the sub-points to a main point can only be seen through like a drop down arrow thing.

To all those using ANKI, I just tried out the Speed Focus Mode add-on. It's amazing. Especially in this last minute revision because it forces you to go through a large number of cards in a short period of time. Basically you can set it so that the answer will be revealed after a certain amount of time like 10 or 15 seconds.

@dragon_rider ah! Nice. It’s like Flashcards without the algorithm

Yeah pretty much. I think it's better for Mains since we aren't really preparing stand-alone facts and rather we're preparing on inter-linked analysis of various topics/subjects.

So for the past two weeks i've been moping around and stuff because I totally fucked up my Prelims. It was just really atrocious. Knowing that I have no chance to clear it really upset me and I, of course, started off with blaming UPSC for making the exam tough. In reality, my preparation was sub-par. I knew that but just took some time to accept it and figure out a broad plan to fix those problems. Now this has nothing to do with this group nor does it have anything to do with what I really started typing this message out for which was to kick-start the group into adding ANKI decks for others to be able to use it to their advantage. I just wanted to put this out there. To be able to tell myself, that I have truly accepted it since I accepted it in public.

So here are the ANKI decks I have made:

Notion user here. I made all my Mains notes on Notion for the last attempt. The toggle feature was extremely useful.
For those willing to collaborate, I'll be willing to share all the notes I've made so far (covers 80% of topics). We can come together and create some sort of master notes with excellent points for all topics as collaboration features are excellent.

As for Anki, I feel it's more useful for Prelims (since the key aspect is memorization).

Maybe we can break up the work and create flashcards for specific areas?

After that we can share it to all

@dragon_rider already has done some great work. We can add onto that

I made such lofty promises pre Prelims but I have done 0 work. Still do not know how to use notion. Any beginner's guide?

Hi, I really liked the Anki idea. I would like to prepare my decks and share it. You can share more decks if you have them. I would really appreciate it.
