Will be posting some csat questions for practice here on a daily basis!
Can anyone explain why ans is not (a) when it is mentioned in passage itself.. Inference means conclusion then passage statement should be the answer
You have brought up a very valid question. One of the many reasons why candidates get stuck here is because they fail to understand the distinction between 'summary' and 'inference'.
The inference is a deduction based on the evidence given in the passage. What is already given in the passage would not qualify as a deduction from the passage!
This is why 'Reading Comprehension (RC)' is considered one of the toughest sections in the CAT exam. A lot of RC questions in CAT are not based directly on the facts stated in the passage but require you to make some inferences. These inferences are logical conclusions from the facts of the passage, but not the facts therein.
So, if the inference is asked, you need to eliminate the option that has been picked up from the passage first. Then, you should go on to choose the option that appears logically consistent.
Can you pls elaborate on the other keywords which can be asked in place of inference and how they can be solved. Just a brief idea.
Few ideas that I can tell off the top of my head:
- Attempt the paper with no inherent information in your subconscious. You know nothing. You have to answer based on what has been presented only! ===> This idea alone will help you sail over the threshold marks.
- Dealing with generalizations:A generalization is simply a fact that you've read for your GS Prelims test. For example- The growth rate of Indian agriculture has been stagnant at around 3%. This is a fact. However, it would not be true for RC if the statement has not been used in the given passage. 2 out of 3 times, the Commission puts one or more such generalization to trap students. The logic that is to be used to solve RC questions is very different. In certain questions, you will be asked- Which of the assumptions are valid? Which is the most logical message conveyed by the passage?
- In such questions, there's a 95% possibility of getting tricked by such generalizations. Unless a statement is drawn from the passage or is an inference/deduction to whatever is discussed in the passage, you do not mark it right no matter how correct it might appear to you.Assumptions are something that you deduce from the passage.
- One should also remember thata fact cannot be a deduction! A deduction has to be a very generic statement.
I think these observations will help tackle the RC. I'll add to these if any other idea occurs to me.
A bag contains 20 balls. 8 balls are green, 7 are white and 5 are red. What is the minimum number of balls that must be picked up from the bag blindfolded (without replacing any of it) to be assured of picking at least one ball of each colour?
a. 13 b. 11 c. 17 d. 16
16.
If we pick up 5 it can be only gree or all red or all white. But if we choose 6, then even if all 5 red balls are picked, we know that at least one ball will be gree or white.
If we pick up 8, we know that all 8 balls may be gree only
If we pick up 8 balls, which by our bad luck is all green, and then we keep picking up balls and by bad luck they can be all white balls till 15 balls. but 16th ball will 100% be of red color because all other balls have been picked up.
good questions. earlier when i saw this question, i thought it was pwrmutationr or probability. then i thought i will solve it on pen and paper, when i sat down, it was simpler!
45. A gardener increased area of his rectangular garden by increasing its length by 40% and decreasing its width by 20%. What is the area of new garden?
Apply formula for such area change questions:
(X) + (Y) + (X) (Y) / 100
Here X = +40% Y= -20% so change in area would be
(+40) + (-20) + (+40) (-20) /100 = 40-20-8 = +12% (Area will be INCREASED by 12% !)

Which app do you use?
Notability or good notes?
Which ipad model do you have ?
Tell me more!
Do you make all notes in ipad. Is it tiring?
Do you use apple pencil 2?
Is that a font ???
Did you do it on iPad? What font do you use? What one do you use??
You will beat Anudeep in handwriting!
21. When the digits of two-digit numbers are reversed, the number increases by 27, the sum of such two-digit numbers
(a) 235
(b) 249
(c) 213
(d) 180
21. (B)
Hahaha... thanks. I wrote it on ipad. Not a font.
Apple iPad 6th gen, pencil 1st gen, Notability app. I do make notes in it, but not all. Mostly I use it for annotating the pdf (like Economic survey etc), organizing notes, reading books and Newspaper, solving test papers, and for rough works.

@Naadan_Parinda No actually I am not talking about Wednesday issue, I am assuming by next Wed(8days) it can be 24h +12 min late which will appear as 12 min to us only. However, seeing the other 3 options It should be delayed by less than 24 h ie 12 min only and ans should be (d) then.According to me, in order to be 24h+12min late, it will take (16* ((24*60)+12)/24) days i.e 968 days.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
no you are not getting what I am trying to point out. It would be confusing for others let it go. :p let it be simple question for now.Ps- Upsc would keep it easy won't twist much.We can discuss in chat if you are interested. Then one mistake I did. It is 12*n h+ 12 min rather then 24h.
Oh no, dont put things in chat. Most information that should be easily searchable for eternity is created and lost in telegram groups and emails.
Let us keep discussions open.

44. Income of A is 20% higher than that of B. Income of B is 25% less than that of C. What % less is A's income than that of C?
Change all such %age questions in p/q format , then workout with LCM method reverse engineering.
20% =1/5 , 25% = 1/4
5 and 4 ka LCM = 20 Assume this as C income
So C=20 units then B= 20×3/4=15 units
B=15 units then A= 15×6/5= 18 units
So A/C %age = (20-18)/20 ×100 = 10% !
23. If the first day of the year (other than the leap year) was Sunday, then which was the last day of that year?
(a) Monday
(b) Sunday
(c) Saturday
(d) None of these
@upsc2020 - Option - b (Sunday) ?
Sunday is Right.
23 B

Thankfully, in CSAT the commission has never put difficult choices in aptitude questions. This is the point I have always tried to make.
So those people weak in CSAT can see that why solving maths type problems is the best approach.

19. In a recent survey 40% houses contained two or more people. Of those houses containing only one person 25% were having only a male. What is the percentage of all houses which contain exactly one female and no males (Assume that each house contains at least one person)?
(a) 60
(b) 40
(c) 45
(d) 75
C. 45
