Was feeling a bit down in the dumps, spent the whole day vacillating between whether to read a novel or watch a movie. In the end , did none of the two and the whole day went by in mindlessly reading political articles, which stressed me even more.

Things to do tomorrow -

- wrap up Aristotle and ambedkar

-current affairs for interview

- society topics

Is there any secret/esoteric way to get out of a rut extending more than a month? or maybe we can say years, tbvh.

All these start small, create a schedule, focus on building habits, know your why, etc seems good in theory or while giving gyaan to others. I know many people do these things and they get the results. but for me executing these has become an unattainable task, the vicious loop of procrastination and instant gratification just don't seem to end. and it been over years since i've had any decent day. I know in the end i'd have to figure things out on my own and ranting won't take me anywhere.

Anyway, thanks for reading my rant. Suggestions are welcome, though I know they help much, unless I help myself.

My ability to waste the whole day is beyond amazing. Woke up at 12pm, then idk the day just went skskskksks. Just read the newspaper. Rating- 0/10

I tracked my hours for last 15 days and realised that whenever i started studying sharp at the scheduled time (9am for me) i was able to pull decent number of hours, whereas whenever i failed to stick to schedule, my whole day went down the drain. Lesson -  starting hours of schedule make all the difference. They set the pace for the rest of your day.. do something productive right in the morning , and you are more likely to achieve your targets and end your day on a happy note

Hey everyone should check out this thing called the Pomodoro technique-

where you study for 25 minutes and then take a break for 5 weeks.

5 weeks or 5 minutes ?

You should try both and decide accordingly, tho i personally liked the 5 weeks one

Mann hi ni kar raha. Itna mann karta hai to come back on Forum but this is not 2020 anymore. My friends@whatonly ,@AzadHindFauz @sjerngal  and many others are already selected and I am still slogging. I come here and I feel defeated. Isiliye, mann ni karta aane ka yahan.

.... that once again I will be all alone in the battle that is no one else's to fight but mine alone, the battle of which no one else can be the Nayak but only me. As i pick up my weapons , my swords, my bows and arrows, as i ready my horse to enter the battle field, a heaviness comes over me , a sense of doubt creeps in...is it worth it to continue this battle that yields no result , that has reached a stalemate...will the pyrrhic victory , if it ever comes , be as beautiful and as satisfactory in reality as it is in imagination.

Perhaps Om Puri's rendition of Dilip Chitre's poem in Ardh Satya best describes the feeling -

It was the winter of 2016 , i had ordered a novel but what amazon delivered was a self help book. I skimmed through a few pages and decided to keep it. One of the advice tendered in the book to be successful in life was to burn all the bridges so that there's no going back, and this advice was reinforced again and again in different forms. Would you believe it ,the young and naive dolt i was , i took it seriously.  now i think it was the Worst advice ever!!!

I am sure you would want to know the Book name . drumm rolls.clapps.embrace yoself. and lo and behold! It was How to think and grow rich by Napolean Hill XD

Every choice has an opportunity cost attached to it. Either you can buy a test series or you can have an iPad, the choice is yours.

If you ask me , buy ipads.. in last 5 years i have amassed a dozen of them. Atleast these ipads don't become redundant every year and you have something to show for when your parents ask where did all the money go.

Today my 6 year old headphone lost a limb and that prompted me to introspect about my own tortuous journey into the abyss of cse. Am i also not being worn down by circumstances, chewed by the sharp teeth of time, consumed by profound grief and guilt,  undermined by my sheer lack of discipline. My hairs are graying , my health is deteriorating , my parents are growing old, my friendships have passed into the black hole of oblivion. What am I doing with my life.

A mocking voice came wafting from next room : making a mountain out of a molehill.

"It's just a headphone silly",shouted my sister over her lungs in her quirky voice.

" Would it have killed you to feign some sympathy", said I.

" I don't have any sympathy for petty bourgoise who plunge into existential crisis for a stupid overpriced product of a capitalist system that exploits the labour of the third world poor workers ,and that makes a lot of noise about sustainability and ESG corporate pradigm to whitewash its products; and then sell these products to the same gullible bourgeoisie who lap it up, thanks to the blietzkrieg of modern marketing techniques that have succeeded in transforming the multidimensional man into a unidimensional consuming man who defines his identity in terms of what he owns, and of which brand", came the retort.

Needless to say my mood was runined and i knew exactly the thing that could cheer me up. So , i went out to have a pizza at bominos. After that i went to the shopping mall to buy some expensive branded tshirts (made in Bangladesh in a sweatshop) , and some Jodhpurs at a steep discount( they said it's limited time deal so my fomo kicked up and i forgot that they have been offering the same discount since forever. Great strategy, mark your product at 7k give 3 k discount and it's still expensive af) . nevertheless, After suffusing myself with capitalistic gratification , my senses were pleasantly calmed. Took an uber back home and gladly reasured my self with ' Isn't life amazing'.

Oh! About those headphones. The company just released a new improved version which will make me feel as if the celestial nymphs themselves are  doing a live concent in front of my eyes. This made me wet at my mouth, that is to say i was salivating like Tommy , my neighbour's dog. Cant wait to get my hands on them, that is to say the headphones , not the dog. I hate dogs. They remind of my own pavlovian conditioning.

Hi! Does anyone remember the history book (not spectrum or bipan chandra or the ncerts) that was being recommended because there were few questions in prelims directly from it in the recent past? I am unable to recollect the name of the authors. (I feel like reading some books and thought it would be better to read this than any random one.)

Thanks.

How pleasant is it to just read and read...reading while lying on bed , reading while listening to music, reading while eating lays, reading while being half asleep...pleasant tranquil reading. Then there's writing...boring , tiring, tedious, frustrating, life sucking.....worthy of being inflicted as a punishment on your worst enemies. Maybe this is the reason why teachers in school asked us to write sorry 100 times in our notebooks instead of asking us to read a book :o

Got a newfound love for life. Love you zindagi!

I was hospitalised for the last 15 days, in the initial days my fever was hovering around 101 all the time even after heavy paracetamol. Blood tests, canola, syringes and all the painful tests I had gone through. Sometimes I felt Im losing myself in the war, even the doctors scared me as reason for high fever could not be diagnosed. It was so painful that words wont be enough to explain.

Not only my experience but I heard about a 4 month old baby admitted in the hospital. In the emergency, I heard noises of family of a man in 30s crying who died of an accident. My nurse told me about another man who died in ICU. One of my roomates had to go through MRI to spot a blood clot in brain which was causing hazy vision to him. A diabetic aunty who was not able to move her right hand beyond a point after a road accident. An alcoholic college boy had destroyed his pancreas or liver I couldn't remember to whom the doctor said youll die in 3 months if you dont quit alcohol. You get to know many things when you stay such a long time in hospital.

I came home today. Heaven. We take most of the things for granted, quality time with family and friends, all the UPSC pain everything is a blessing. Every painless breath is a blessing.

Naukri aur chokri, you get these desirable and life is set we used to say in college. These 15 days changed my whole perspective for looking towards life. Healthy and a painless life is indeed underrated

And I swear from today Ill never crib about shitty things like career and UPSC.

'Love you zindagi'

Having suffered from health issues myself i can totally relate with you. There was a point in my life where my biggest wish was to wake up one morning and not feel pain.  I envied healthy people. I envied normal life. Carreer goals, wealth, everything seemed hollow in face of the reality of my own mortality. It reminded me that life's biggest possessions are the ones that we take for granted - a loving family, good health, mental peace...but frail creatures as we are and given to amnesia which is why history keeps repeating as tragedy and farce ....i forgot all about it one year down the line as my health improved. Your experience resuccitated the dead memories and lessons for me. Thank you for expressing yourself so honestly and plainly. Wishing you good health.

How is everyone? Preparation going good?

Whim and impulse have taken control of the ship. I tried to placate them by taking help of senecaji but to no avail. Like a bunch of stubborn bratty child, they even taunted me trying to bait me into giving them a good thrashing. But i realised the more i try to be controlling and overbearing the more their defiance grows. So, for now i am waiting it out, hoping they get tired and go to sleep ,like all children do, and i may have my peace of mind back and i may get down to do some serious work XD

How is it going over there 😅

Never wanted the job though, but wanted to face UPSC interview before actual interview. Thik h, am meant for greater things I believe.

Ho jayega yaar. This reminds me of the story of the rabbit and the elephant. Rabbit and the elephant were expecting babies around the same time. Rabbit had many babies and made fun of the elephant which has a really long gestational period. But when the elephant baby was born and it grew up all the other animals looked at it in awe. Hum bhi haathi ka baccha paal rhe h, khargosh toh bohot milenge.

Haathi ke bacche paalte paalte main khud haathi kyun hota ja raha hu? 🥲🥲

Ek photographer ki study thi ki dog wonders and their dogs slowly tend to resemble each other… tum aur main wahi kar rhe h

Tell me more ☕️🫖

Woh typo ho gya tha but basically the guy said that jo log kaafi time se apne dogs ke saath hote h they end up looking like their dogs. 😬

Or is it the other way round - dogs pick up on their owners fear, anxiety, anger and start acting like them?! XD

Done with morning one and half hour. More to go. Time to grind. Wish I could listen my favourite songs w someone and vibe. Wish I could tell them why I like this song and then I really wish I we'll sing those songs together.

It hurts when you  no longer have that someone. Slowly you stop listening to your favourite music, slowly you stop doing things that you enjoy because now those things remind you of that someone. You stop singing your favourite song, you stop watching your favourite show, you try to explore new things which may not necessary give you happiness.

Well exploring new things has it's pros and cons. I would want to explore new things with a positive and empty mind space. Which I don't think is possible for me right now. Or I would want to explore new things with people I feel comfortable with.

Am I a hopeless romantic ? Am I too emotional ? yadda yada. Do I overshare to random new people? YUP. Do they lose interest in me after I overshare ? YES. Why so though ? because I'm not mysterious anymore and people naturally curious about things. Once things become clear people aren't interested no more (':

As people were itching for political content here it is -+ You asked for it -- though scope for ladai isnless as no political party or ideology was harmed during the ranting of the following opinion -

Dramatic turn of events at the omaxe society. What's Astonishing is the state itself becoming an instrument of people's base emotions. Rather than emerging as the sane voice that resolves conflicts in a manner that inspires trust and elevates people to a higher moral plane , it is giving birth to mutual hatred and rancor. First, shrikant's house is bulldozed and people of the omaxe society cheer and hail the government. This bulldozing circus infuriates tyagi community which gives an ultimatum to the govt to bulldoze other illegal structures in the society or be ready to face the ire of community. The hapless administration , which has by now become an accomplice in barbarian justice , rushes in bulldozers once again to demolish structures in omaxe. This time it's the turn for the tyagi community to cheer and omaxe society members' turn to cry. What a sadist society it must be to revel in such barbarianism. It seems The ideal of fraternity in the preamble of the constitution has not taken roots even when we are celebrating 75th year of independence. Another controversial bulldozing event took place amid cheering at a crime scene in uttarakhand. One can't find any parallels for such stupidity anywhere in the world. One wonders how such precedences help the cause of justice...how does it make women safe at workplace, how does it address the difficult questions that stare us at the face in wake of a rising graph of crime against women. Maybe , it's the unwillingness to find lasting solutions that prompts govts to take the easy and high optics route of bulldozer justice.

If that's the kind of justice that can be expected from a modern state in 21st century, why malign the khap panchayats at all. To me the difference between the state and khaps is indistinguishable as the things stand.

@Morticia tbh we all have our base instincts like dark humour and so on. Expecting the masses literate & illiterate too live virtuously is expecting too much. Virtue is a kingly trait rare to find it among the masses.

Its not about turning the society into a utopian ramrajya. That's not practical.in real world Vices and virtues coexist with each other. The point is that the conduct of state does have a huge influence on the masses. Why has there been a sudden spurt in demand for bulldozer action all around the country? Because the state gave this idea that bulldozing can also be a way to seek justice. In the battlefield when Arjun is hesitant in attacking his kins Krishna reminds him that he is not fighting the war in individual capacity but as a king. His conduct will be watched over by the masses and if he fails to uphold dharma ( moral order) then it will set a bad precedent. Likewise Plato says that state is individual writ large. As state becomes perverted so does the society. Hence the need for the state and those holding important positions in the state to uphold highest values. Offcourse we need rods at times , but the use of the rod is not to be done for its own sake , it has to be done for some higher purpose. even Manu who considers Danda/rod as a discipliner, warns king against its reckless use as it brings ruin to the king.

I know realists and cynics tend to scoff at at any talk of values and morality, but the fact remains we all need someone in our lives who inspires us to be righteous , to be a better human being. We all need a bUddha , a Gandhi, a rama in our lives to teach us about the superiority of non violence over violence, of good over evil.

Sounds like a lot of rhetoric 😆 but abhi ye hee aaya dimag me

1.8k views
@D503 I can bet my life that the masses were not virtuous when Gandhi or Buddha were teaching their lessons or when Prabhu Ram walked on the earth. I can bet my life that the masses are not virtuous today. It's the societal taboos & fear of stick that keeps them in check. The king or state have to be virtuous for their own sake. Sri Krishna does not care about the masses watching Arjun, he cares about keeping the virtue intact and going within their lineage, he does not want to see decline in the Kshatriya/Master morality. Arjun is exhorted to fight so that the slave morality does not creep into his lineage/progeny. Arjun is exhorted to fight because it's a kingly trait. Arjun is not a gladiator fighting for mass spectacle.

it's a Hobbes vs Locke debate. I prefer to take the lockean view of state of nature :p  it was never my point taht people are completely virtuous. But that doesn't mean we stop preaching virtues.

So I have wasted a day giving a send off to my dear-est friend today.I always expected@D503 to light the fireworks. Now I have an opinion and that isn't a favourite amongst guys studying for an exam that is oriented towards Humanities.

So, I was being taught Hohfeld's theory by my favourite ma'am(Anju Vali Tikoo ma'am). So ma'am did posit a question before all of us in the due course of teaching the topic. The question was-What came first, Claims or Power?

She  did explain the query superlatively. But, I would try to introduce that aspect in the debate sparked by my bhai@D503.So, Tyagis tried to bully and so did all the nincompoops who don't think twice before challenging the authority of the State.

And, I am super satisfied that State is being Retributive when its authority is jeopardised. State can reform what can be moderated. But, who will moderate the devilish tendencies of individuals trying to push girls into flesh trade. Or, for that matter trying to illegally grab properties and if restrained, then resorting to bullying.

Bulldozers aren't always the solution but they do send a message and a relevant one. The message that the State ain't a Soft State anymore. Furthermore, bulldozing ain't a lasting solution and I agree here. But, what it leads to is a general impression of state coming after you, for the grave wrongs you commit. This consequentially leads to fear and helps in establishing rule of law. Imagine raping a girl and a reformative system rewarding one with life skill courses in jail.

Also, the formation of governments is duly in the hands of the  people of the country. And, in the process, they are entitled to Administraive Discretion, where bullying the untamed is a good option in some instances.

To conclude from where I started, there ain't any Claims sans Power. What we as citizens will demand if the idea of an imposing state itself is watered down.

@LetsGetThisBread Jaise teacher, vaise unke bacche.

wtf !! Didnt know i am that predictable 😆

Completely agree with punishing wrong doers with an iron hand. Saudi, Taliban afghanistan, Iran have very low crime rates so the use of brutal force is certainly a deterence .

@mightyraju

The point i raised was never about dissent and protests. It was about stupidity of a state that fails to follow due process and bulldozes building for crimes for which there's already provisions in law. (A better approach would be to amend criminal laws and replace existing sentences with death by bulldozing or something similar :p ) This sort of arbitrariness is not by any stretch of imagination a sign of a strong state marked by independent institutions and capacity to enforce its laws.  What it does reflect is a state trying to pander to base emotions and playing to populism by creating mass spectacles akin to show-trials of Stalin ,albeit not aimed at political rivals. in my limited knowledge Saudi Arabia , Iran are states in the sense they have a govt, population, territory, and sovereignty

Lol Salam ;)

Friends thodi help kar do.

NCERT says:  Magnetite is the finest iron ore, with a very high iron content of upto 70%. Hematite ore has slightly lower iron content than Magnetite

PMF IAS also says the same.

HOWEVER,

DR Khullar says:  Haematite  is best quality of iron ore, with 70% Metallic content. Magnetite is second best ore.

This website  says the same: Hematite ore has the chemical formula Fe2O3 and has a very high iron content of 70 percent. With the chemical formula Fe3O4, magnetite ore has much lower iron content than hematite ore.

Toh ab kiski baat maane?

What a coincidence..Was reading the same just now 😆

nios book also says haematite has highest concentration of iron.

But Shabbir sir geo notes - magnetite dia hai.

Yes, the masses  work on their biases and their stereotypes, whose  repercussions are faced by intellectuals like Divyakarthi Sir. It's  frightening for me to witness all of this. I wish people would read and introspect more.  Did you see the Lalantap video where Sir was given a platform to clear all the misunderstanding? The host was very polite, asked relevant questions and actually listened to Sir when our Sir was giving proof for the points he mentioned in the  controversial video. The host is entirely opposite to our  rozke news channel anchors. Also the quickness shown by Lalantap in uploading their video is commendable.Within a day or so, they addressed the issue and uploaded the video in order to rectify the damages done to our Sir.  One more thing that I found interesting in that video was the compassion showed by the host towards Sir's family and mental health.

Having such an effective alternative medium is a sign of hope for me and I wish  that similar platform, quick response and treatment will be provided to marginal sections (women, sc/sts and religious minority) of our society if some similar incident happens to them. I mean similar controversy happened with a vision lady prof earlier this year right ? Vocal Dalits and Tribals have been silenced as well and so is the case with religious minority. I expect next time Lalantap will  provide similar platform to vulnerable sections of our society and not just be limited to  a Brahmin-man.

Boy I had to tone down my anger and words to type this out. I had to change my tone to make it look like it's constructive criticism. Yeh tone policing is somewhat difficult for me, Challo I'm still learning

@morsmodre I have graduated in Zoology Hons. Par aata mujhe bhi nahi kucch. Try reading 9th yaa 11th ki Biology portion of NCERT.It has everything. It may not land direct Prelims Q's,but the content surely helps in elimination.

@LetsGetThisBread Tumhari batein mere upar se jaa rahi.

@D503 Ldaai jagda chalta rehna chahiye. On a serious note, I see Ramayana as a decentralised historical text with multiple interpretations. The major point of contention is whether Uttara Kandh is a part of Ramayana or not since it has certain references where Bhagwan Ram comes across as an anomaly to his prior description. And, if I can recall correctly, even Ami Ganatra(new translator in the game) in a recent podcast cited this reference of Ghee and Dog!

Hi friend! Schedule is so sporadic it feels futile to post till the time my school related ordeals are over. Will be back in January- February regularly. Uske baad waise bhi kamar kasne ka time aa hi jayega 😬

Can completely relate with sporadic schedule thingy even though i don't have any school related work or anything else to do. Maybe it's the winter inertia XD

~ Harishankar Parsai

Maine socha kisi ne nahi pucha hoga to mai hi puchh leta hu..

How was your year 2022.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Jiii...?

😅

Thank you for asking this. This has been a kaafi memorable year.

Phela prelims clear hua, I went on to write mains. The most amazing experience of my life and something I have been eagerly waiting since the last 4 years. I didn't clear, but having written mains the experience was great.

Personally this year has been amazing for me in the sense that I made some very good friends this year all thanks to forum. These are the friendships which will continue for life I believe.

Went to Delhi, the place I love the most, met my school friends and a veryy dear dear friend who I haven't met since 10 years.

I remember pichle saal this time only I was someone who was so hopeless, anxious and dealing with a lot of issues like loneliness, depressed about not clearing exam and what not, even though this year post mains I have been feeling all the same feelings but I feel I am in a better position in dealing with it. And to everyone who is reading this, trust me guys, if you are going through it, things will change for sure. You will do good.

Baaki I am just hoping next year isse bhi acha ho. Mains wains nikle, interview wagera de aur kya :p

And yeh tum logon ne puch puch ke kaise din ja raha, mera din acha kar dia. Thanks xD

P.S Arey sab batao, how was 2022 for you guys! Tag nhi ho pa rhe ho koi bhi as edit kr rhi, but everyone please share how has this year been for you all?

For me the year began with a bang and i had 3-4 opportunities in my hand - rbi mains , upsc mains, epfo interview, 2 more exams - and i was like ab to kuch na kuch hath lagega. But as they say count no man happy until he be dead..and slowly one by one i saw all of them slip away like grains of sand from my hands. Took aa drop from cse this year and hoped things will be alright , that i will be able to find my willpower to study again. But very soon realised i will never get back that enthusiasm and energy of earlier attempts back, that i will ahve to labour like Sisyphus pushing the boulder back to the top of the hill , and be prepared to see it roll back to the bottom. Its not like i don't want to study , only that i am attracted towards subjects which are completely unrelated to upsc. Also the curse of knowing something about everything , a courtesy of multiple failures in plethora of exams , ensures that i stay complacent about my preparation. I am in a kind of a low equilibrium trap( I don't know if this economic term can be applied to non economic context, but this is the only term i can think of to describe my situation).

And now something positive. I have worked on my health and it feels great to be able to wake up everyday without some part of my body throbbing with pain. I have begun to feel more and more grateful and privileged for having supportive parents and siblings. Problems abound around us but we laugh our way through them , somehow finding some or other ray of hope in the littlest of things. This is quite surprising because there was a time when i compared my family with the family of Gregor Samsa XD but thankfully it was just me overreacting to the natural ebbs and flows in the life of a family.

So there's that. Yhin royenge hum XD

@D503 ,@sstarrr  can you please give some idea about how hard is to crack RBI Grade B for someone with UPSC background. I have cleared CSE prelims a few times but never passed the Mains stage. After this year Mains result, I have decided to take a break from CSE 2023 and change my optional for CSE2024.

At present I am studying mainly optional and giving 4-5 hrs in a week to RBI. I am planning to finish a quick read of Edutap’s concept notes of management by 10th of January and after that give 4hrs on daily basis to RBI. Will this be sufficient or do I need to start increasing time from now onwards? I am getting a feeling that I am taking RBI too lightly.

Please provide any other suggestions which you think can help to clear RBI, especially mains stage(I am worried about management, Edutap seems too vast).

I personally found management to be the easiest of all. It's completely static. Make your own mindpmaps or use the ones provided by edutap. That should be enough.

@Joeyisthebesthas cleared rbi this year , i think he is better suited to answer your qsns 😅

My peeps all the best. For many of you it will be your first prelims , and trust me the excitement and thrill of this first attempt will not be matched by any subsequent attempts. So try to make the best of it....dont rely only on bookish knowledge ..draw upon your life experiences, your lifelong learnings , your logic ... don't lose your nerves. keep calm throughout.. you will do better than your expectations.

and even if you don't there's always an opportunity to improve next time. But I pray that there's no next time and you triumph in this very attempt .  Best of luck mates.
