Btw, B tha answer? How?
@DrGodMode Both are equally good. The Black and White one is the old edition whereas the coloured one is the new one. People used to refer to Black and White earlier as the new editions just came out I guess just 2 years back. Hence the confusion. You can pick any one of them.
For every Geography Related issue, go to pmfias.com
That guy has some brilliant notes on every topic. Plus it is dirt cheap for 200-300 something and a two year subscription. As far as I know, it is run by one of the ex aspirants. Everyone should buy his subscription I feel.and environment too.... both are too good...they also provide maps...( not promoting but genuinely asking fellow members that if you feel shankar ias is not that good or bulky then you can have a look at pmfias...its cost is about 100rs)
1000%. Call it blatant promotion but the guy at PMF is really good and is working very hard to provide content at throwaway prices.
@SergioRamosAre the notes different from the articles on the website?
Looks mostly the same to me. But I have had just taken a cursory glance over the website articles.
Perfect. Thankyou so much!
@Raillife I have just started and am doing a revision of basics plus adding fodder to the generic material. Dividing subjects in a 10-day slot. For eg- Economy 1-10 April and so on.
@Joeyisthebest I refer to them selectively. As for the topics I cannot understand or ones requiring more material than NCERT.
what is patent pooling?Since it is good fodder for mains also and can be used in a variety of answers, sharing this well-written article.
https://www.mondaq.com/india/patent/325602/patent-poola questions follows , that the vaccine produced by Serum institute can be an exmaple of patent pooling ? - wrt to giving access to third party for the use of patent commodity,.?
On the surface of it, it looks like it. I do not know the contractual details of whether licenses have been shared or not or is just production. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Down To Earth's annual issue- State of India’s Environment 2021would be a very good read for CSE 21. You may read it selectively.
They have revealed the index and the introduction to the issue in the link attached.
Just received it a few days back and it surely is a lovely read!
@D503 @mehuifs @Usain_bolt thanks, guys! Sometimes the scores rattle you. Even in Polity or History, sometimes they go so deep, and when I check PYQ, questions are moderate.
Hence, for now, done with mocks, ab keval revision.
@Steph_Curry This one's pretty good!

Bhai mocks have become a real mockery. No point in getting intimidated after that. Especially not you, you know how to qualify pre and you know what worked for you.
I understand Bhai. But somehow, the fear is so consuming. Will focus on revision for a while now.
@SergioRamos I scored 140 in the previous forum mock and the very next day attempted some vision open test , scored 39. Lol. These mock scores mean nothing. Just gather new info if you feel that’s relevant and move on.
That is some range! Woaaaah! From today on, this will be my goto comment when looking for Mock score! thanks. :)
Any idea regarding how to go about CSAT?? I did 2014-2019 PYQ and was sailing through, no issues but then I did last year and it was brutal, couldn’t finish on time, couldn’t even do the passages which are my strong point and I’m kinda freaking out right now. Honestly I’m a bit shaken by how bad it was. Any tips? What should I do? I’ve only heard people suggest doing PYQ so that was my strategy but I’m a bit lost now :(
There is a channel named CivilsTap on youtube. They have uploaded detailed solutions of CSAT PYQ's topic wise. Watch and understand the quants and reasoning portions of the past few years! :)
I believe if we are going to attempt all the passages, an error margin of 10 questions must be taken. Hence, trying to attempt 15-20 from maths and reasoning will help.
Around 50 questions are a safe bet.
How does La Nina affect weather pattern in places other than India? In Africa, South America, North America, SEA and possibly Europe? Just warmer, wetter, cooler, dryer sort of thing.
Also, the heat wave in North America this year, was that due to La Nina?
The combined phenomenon of southern oscillation and El Nino is known as ENSO. In the years when the ENSO is strong, large-scale variations in weather occur over the world. The arid west coast of South America receives heavy rainfall, drought occurs in Australia and sometimes in India and floods in China.
Copied verbatim from NCERT. You may reverse all the conditions for La Nina.
And, yes, Heat waves in North America was due to La Nina which created a heat dome effect.
Even after knowing:
A and m history questions are going to be unknown
mocks and CAs of coaching industry will do little or no help
Still we tend to believe in the outdated process, as we don't have much choices.
Welcome to elimination round of UPSC CSE.
So we are just 1 weekend and a week away
There is a time to discuss structural flaws with the paper, but right now it is not. I believe if we question the legitimacy of the thing we are toiling hard to achieve, so close to the final date, somehow our resolve weakens and we descend into the bottomless pit of nihilism.
A very crude analogy would be that if we are trying to learn something from a teacher but continuously doubt the teacher's competence, we won't succeed. A level of trust is necessary for the process. I for one, do not believe that questions not coming from mocks or conventional sources is a bad thing. We sometimes tend to forget that the exam is not just a test of knowledge, but our capability of quick decision making, handling pressure, strategising, and other traits. Such traits are tested best in randomness as a person's true nature is revealed in the face of adversity. The randomness of the questions and a penal marking system that encourages risk-taking are not there without any reason. This exam selects administrators, where knowledge is an important need, but not the only need. Hence the "absurd" questions.
I may be labelled as a UPSC sympathiser, but a certain belief in the process tends to improve my willpower and makes the journey a bit more walkable.
Plus, these type of questions are found in almost all corners of the world. Here are some from Guokao, the Chinese Civil Service examination.
1)President Xi Jinping has said that while art is based on imagination, it should still be down-to-earth. There may be hundreds of ways to create art; the best way, however, is to go back to the people's daily lives and create something based on that. From a materialistic point of view, this is because:
a. Art originates from the daily lives of people
b. Art depends on innovation
c. The way art reflects on society and its style is unified
d. Art is a form of ideology that reflects people's lives while at the same time serving the people
Choose from the below:
A) a and b
B) a and d
C) b and c
D) c and d
2)Which one is the wrong match between the idioms and economic terms?
A. Spilt water cannot be gathered up again - Opportunity cost
B. One nation can't have two queens - Complete monopoly
C. Entering a room full of fragrant orchids and getting used to the sweet smell -- Diminishing marginal utility
D. When the city gate catches fire, the fish in the moat suffer -- Negative external effects
Hint: Match the meaning of the idioms and the economic terms.
Answer: A
3)What is the possible situation that can happen?
A. Greeks watch World Cup in the stadium when the Revolution of 1911 happened
B. Chinese college students listen to radio by semiconductor receivers during the May 4th Movement
C. During the Cold War, a Soviet cinema shows a color movie
D. During the Vietnam War, Americans can surf the Internet on computers
Hint: You need to know about that period to make the call.
Answer: C
Another one- and the list is endless
agreeI was talking about externalities which make this exam more complex for aspirants, the FOMOthere wasn't need of such long post, mains k time chal jata :P
Padhai ho rahi nahi hai, socha yahi pe kuch likha jaye, hence the length! :P
How to handle questions like this one here?
Is it mentioned anywhere or should I just ignore it as a bouncer question thrown by UPSC?
c?
For 1- charaka and sushruta were alive before. They were surgeons. So there must be specialised instruments.
For 2- Internal organ transplant today is very tricky, imagine that time. Not probabale.
3- I think I read somewhere aryabhatta did.
4- I think bhaskaracharya did.
Plus, if you eliminate 2 and know 1 is correct, no need to know 3 and 4.
@SergioRamos attempt atleast 55, if you want to stay in the race. Speaking from previous experiences, i am from non science background, but lot of questions seems difficult prima facie only, give them a good read and you can easily do 55+ in csat.
Will do so. thanks! :)
https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/explained-the-caracal-a-favourite-of-royals-now-critically-endangered-7206724/
Does NBWL maintain a separate list of critically endangered species? This one is of least concern acc. to IUCN
Yes it has a separate list. Caracal is in abundance outside India, in middle east and Africa I recall. India me khatra hai!
Here is the list.

Btw, this is a great source for all kind of protected areas and species locations. A great revision tool. Sarkari too. Must check.
Hi, can anyone recommend a source where I could find past prelims papers arranged subjectwise?
https://blog.forumias.com/prelims-previous-year-question-quiz/
@Jammu and@Hououin_Kyouma , these type of questions can be a deal breaker though. 2-3 questions means 6 marks. The thing is, how to develop such aptitude? Is it all related to calming our nerves or is there something more?
@SergioRamos i personally believe in this algorithm‘thesis’ (dont fear the topic, even if we have not read it - leads to - calming the nerves - leads to - presence of mind - leads to - application of common sense - leads to Eureka Moment)this thesis has to be followed by ‘anti thesis’ (reading through examiner’s perspective and UPSC’s lenses)finally concluding to ‘synthesis’ based on consensus of above two.Easier said then done, but if we go through UPSC PYQ, there are many questions doable this way, precisely the ancient, art culture, because hindi words used here can always be broken into sub words which have their universally contextual meaning.
Real ID se aao Friedrich Engels. :P
Jokes aside, you are absolutely spot on here. If we just do not give up immediately after reading a question but struggle with it a bit, good things would happen. Thanks. :)
Lets practice our guessing game here
A.
My logic-
I knew paiks were compulsory service providers(military and otherwise) during the Ahoms and were sent from villages by rotation. I am left with A and D. Then if you see in the D option, C is given with 5( matching Havaldar as head of 3 havaldars). Eliminated D and came with A.
