Geography optional Mains 2019 discussion | Lessons Learnt

@madeyeI think with 2 map Entries correct and writing all other questions good or avg will easily get u 130+ marks (as per my experience of the paper 2 marks last year)

3.1k views

@Arrah_Jilawhile in paper 1 ..I feel they are very specific while awarding marks..they don't award marks if u don't address the main demand of the question eg in Weber's qusn simply writing entire Weber theory won't fetch marks ..u have to be specific with the demand of the questions

Even in generic question like genetic diversity ..the structuring and maps will be the key ..eg here the map of gene pool centre could be apt

@jumbo

As per my experiences till date

  1. Map :- If marking of map is near accurate with avg write-up
U can get full marks eg for 4 correct entries 8 marks

  2. 10 markers :- Avg write-up :- 5 marks
    Good Write-up:- 6 marks
    Excellent - Good + map :- 7 marks
Below avg: not addressing qusn but writing some relevant points :- 2-3 marks

  3. 15 markers :- Avg write-up :- 7
    Good :- 8-9
Excellent:- 10-11(some relevant maps, diagrams or case studies )
Below avg :- 5 (with some degree of relevance )

  4. 20 markers:- Avg :-8-9
    Good:- 11-12
    Excellent:- 14-15 (same criteria)
    Below avg :- 5-6

Putting under avg and good is subjective to different view points but I feel at this stage we very well know what is good and avg so just go by your instincts

I put those answers as avg which are written in hurry in last half an hour though we know a lot about that topics

So based on ur experiences ... relevant addressing of questions ..putting meaningful map diagrams and case studies u can calculate ur marks

@madeyearound 2 ten markers to almost sabka gadbad hua hai ..so need not to worry

Rest qusns kaise hue hai sabke ..will decide the marks

@jumboBhai paper 1 me I left two questions ..those are Phreatic eruptions and tombolos ...NRR and true replacement rate me I started with true replacement rate bcz ye to samjh me aata tha but was not sure about NRR so tried writing some normal related things which went completely wrong ..

So effective attempt was of 220 marks

3.1k views

@Arrah_Jilarest I attempted 2,7&8

So pls post the question which we can discuss here

Eg. In 2(a) part 1
importance of conservation of genetic diversity ?
Part 2
Purpose served by protected areas

Ans:- Intro with what do we mean by genetic diversity
Then a world map with Gene pool centres

Importance of conservation me
     Wai sab ncert wale concepts
     - importance of genetic biodiversity for ecosystem balance ,food chain ,niche etc
     - education and research
     - act as barrier against climate change and invasive species

     Purpose served by protected areas
     - protected areas and types
     -purpose served me :-
       Maintainence of habitat
Facilitating insitu and ex situ conservation
Checking against human intervention and wildlife crimes
       Facilitating research

Way forward me kuch suggestions ke sath conclude Kiya with eg of Bandipur where every 1 rupee spent worth 700% including genetic conservation

@jumbo2 b) compare and contrast types of plate boundaries

Intro :- concept of plates and plate boundaries
3 types of plates with simple schematic of each
A table to compare and contrast these 3 types of boundaries

Conclusion me just that their studies are important to understand the various landforms

@jumbomy 2018 paper 1 was disaster ...ek to Maine qusns sahi se address nai kiye ..like 1 a ..structure landform wale me critique part I didn't address similarly ... eurocentric couldn't write ...rostov me bhi qusn address nai Kar paaya ...kobers and threwartha me bhi fundamental mistakes

And the biggest blunder was I write two qusn from human part which was thought ...and with limited knowledge I ended up writing similar contents in two welfare geography qusn

Still got 90 marks (Honestly I was expecting even lesser )

So I feel ..in paper 1 if u address qusn well ..u will get good marks

@Arrah_Jilapls some one review this ...how much marks one should expect with these answers

3.1k views

@jumbopart 1 Nature of urban climate
* Urban Heatisland and it's feature with a diagram
*Weather extremities like cloud burst
*Temperature anomalies like inversion ,Delhi smog

Part 2 Impact on global env
      * Act as hot spot of green house gas emission
      *Impacting albedo
      *Impacting horizontal heat distribution
      * Air circulations
      *Overall ecosystem

Way forward me kuch solutions like green walls ,transit oriented development ,empowering urban governance ,green codes for buildings etc

Overall 3 pages

Please you also share ur answers ...and pls guys participate with your answers or reviews

Even for interview we need to brush up our fundental geography. Concepts

3.1k views

@Hartshorneyes that could be one of the many examples ..but overall holistic coverage require

few examples of insitu :-ike MAB program,National park ...even ramsar wetland conservation program or tiger reserves (if u read summary report if recent project tiger report ..it has done excellent work on conservation of genetic diversity) ,etc

Ex situ like botanical gardens ,gene centres ,zoo etc

So yes MAB and it's diagrams can be one good point ..?

@vvvikas0078212Maine ANTISAT bhi include Kiya hai and have written few lines like it will act as detterent against any enemy attack to our existing and future space programs ..hence strengthening our national security

Is this relevant here ??

3.2k views

@vvvikas0078212left 2 10 markers blank ie pheratic erruptions
And tombolos

Below avg in TRR and NRR(NRR completely wrong)
Avg addresal of amensalism qusn

Rest 10 markers were on the expected lines

Two 50 markers are very well addressed
the 3rd one got little compromised due to paucity o
of time .

Can I expect marks in avg category ie around 125 in paper 1
??

@vvvikas0078212Hopefully kuch positive ho jaaye
Apne optional ki scaling ...anthro wale to 300 ke niche
baat h nai karte ...wish this year be the golden year

@vvvikas0078212Han 280 will be a decent score ..
Baki essay sahi nikal jaaye

Ab jaise result ka time najdik aa raha ..bas sab acha ho

@Bubba_gumpif qusns are well addressed you can
still expect around 130 with very generalised answers
in paper 2

2.9k views

@SUMANSAURABH201296904when you use maps when you mention committee names ,put into spatial aspects ...then it is no more a generilist answer ,it is geography?

2.9k views

@Arrah_JilaGeneralist answers are what we write for GS1 geography questions ..though it includes map but the points are more generic with absence of much of locational and spatial dimensions

2.9k views

@Bubba_gumpExactly ..still gs1 type answers gives u 120-30 in optional 2 if the questions are well addressed ..Rest last year many got 150+ there u must touch the core geography and in optional 2 core geography means integration of optional 1 and 2 syllabus

2.9k views

@SUMANSAURABH201296904with very Generalist answers and 3 map Entries correct it was 129 in paper 2

2.8k views

@vvvikas0078212ya you can always write but I think mentioning geography theories in gs1 is not req eg Coral dev theory like 3D or any in Coral bleach qusn is not of much use in gs1..but they are very much req in optional papers

2.8k views

@vvvikas0078212may be and it was just a ref...but what I think is expectations of examiners in gs1 and optional are different ..you have to be more specific in optional
And if you get good marks with similar answers in both gs1 and optional then it's a good news for all of us

@Bubba_gumpBhai bahut bekar tha ..below 100

@Arrah_Jila@132_SIDThis is for paper 2 ..for paper 1 I kept the same but for below avg answers they don't give much marks at max 2-3 unlike paper 2

2.8k views

@vvvikas0078212yes you are correct, these are based on individual subjective experiences... and yes normalisation can benefit us hopefully in paper 1 this time ..wishful thinking to 300+ ki h hai ..but honest and ek rational way me expectation is 260-290.

2.8k views

@vvvikas0078212same 5 sahi Lothal Bea's Narora Anamudi and Barren

2.8k views

@vvvikas0078212apne optional me paper 2 me around 10 marks hamesa yahi compromise ho jaate hai compare to other optionals ...still last year marking achi huie thi highest was around 180 I guess

2.8k views

@132_SIDnai yaar ...yaha pe my experiences are quite different
Last year I got 100+ in GS2 and GS 4 (both went avg) while I was expecting good marks in paper 3 but got just 86 and in paper 1 it was a disaster (no idea how they had evaluated paper 1 )

Here I don't have any logical idea about marking pattern

All I can say is if paper is attempted with avg level and all parts of qusns are addressed with avg write-up ..u can expect 100+( Again it's my individual opinion)

@132_SIDmujhe to jyada scope nai dikha theories ka and limited time me kuch yaad bhi nai aaya khaas..I just tried to address the demand of questions through the syllabus given in paper 2

But I know few people who have used few theories likeⓂ
4 c) present status of age structure and availability of workforce

Yaha pe they have used DTT to show current phase of Indian population and concept of optimal population in conclusion

5c) vertical growth of cities :- concentric zonation model

8c) India emerging power in Indian ocean realm :- Rimland theory

I doubt if I have used any of these in my answers ..ab to exactly kuch yaad bhi nai hai

@Scorpion888ya I did the same ..used survey data(table of current age structure and the predicted 2040 age structure) and a map to contrast the age structure of North and South ...I couldn't draw age pyramid since I already had drawn two diagrams and time was running short .

@vvvikas0078212ya even I didn't use any theory ..just tried to address the demand of question ...data about increasing urban population and industrialisation ->increased demand of land in city for residence or commercial purposes ->led to high prices of land->hence verticle growth of cities to accommodate more and more people in lesser surface areas ->affordability resulting into formation of unauthorized colonies with lack of basic facilities ->leading to growth of slum .

Examples of Dharavi Mumbai , Shadipur Delhi , Yellahanka Bangalore

Conclusion me initiatives like suburbs amrut scheme planning like Navi Mumbai NCR ,slum rehabilitation prog etc

Ab 10 marks me theories diagram mujhse adjust nai ho paya

@Arrah_Jilaqusn was asking to correlate price of land verticle growth and growth of slum and I guess no theory talks all these things ...so just mentioning them here won't give a good impression ...it might backfire

@hirockyrocks7101Bhai agree most people have given reference of this model ...but in Indian large cities ye model utna applicable hai nai...u can relate this to any big cities of India

Overall itna deep to examiner ko Jana nai chahiye I guess aapka ye reference positive h rahega?

All the reference of theories are justified if doesn't appear to be forceful according to qusn's demands
