Is banning a solution to the larger problem?

I think it was necessary keeping in view the data privacy and security concerns and Chinese Govt's influence over these apps.

It also mentions CamScanner. Any other similar app?

It can also be seen as a message to China that India can also ban the 5G technology of Huwaei, in which China clearly has some stakes.

I have been using Adobe Scan for a long time instead of CamScanner for scanning my answer sheets.

I started using Adobe Scan initially because it didn't put a watermark like CamScanner.

Students can try Adobe Scan and if they have a good smartphone it should work better than CamScanner in auto mode.

I really like Notes Bloc app as a replacement to Cam Scanner, have been using it since 1 year. I had uninstalled Cam Scanner last year after google removed it from Play Store for malicious activity

Silly to ban apps. China has so much investment in other ventures. Just that they are larger lobbies, you wouldn't touch them.

Is that why you deem it ‘silly’, because there are larger fishes untouched ?

@Agog In my opinion this is just a populist as well as symbolic move by the present government. Putting a blanket ban is never an option to win larger problems. If we look at the trade deficit figures, we very well know what position does our country hold with respect to China. The only positive i can see in this is govt. has called for clarifications from these companies(though if it hadn't been done as populist move, they could have sought the clarifications before putting the ban). In general, when a country move towards a restrictive trade practice in this globalisation era, it should be self-sufficient to atleast meet minimum needs of its population without depending on imports.

I deem it silly because the entire agenda is all about symbolism. We make good headlines for a few days and then phusss.

1. How have you linked the apps being banned to trade deficit and imports ?

2. Within few hours of the move you’ve deciphered it to be symbolic and populist, fast isn’t it ?

I’m neutral on your first statement, but agree with your 2nd. We need to move past being a soft state

1. How can govt link chinese attacks on our borders to banning apps ?

It starts with smaller things like these. Today you will start with app bans, then move on to #boycott chinese products. Then also you wont reach trade deficit picture? And to reach that level one needs to be self sufficient. One needs to atleast first meet basic demands of its population and then go on with diplomacy war with bigger nations.

2. Ohh so why did the govt wait for attacks to happen ? The chinese apps data privacy issue is going on from past year. Why the step just now ? Who wont term it populist ? And why playing such back stabbing, can seek clarification earlier and then ban if not provided with proper explanation?

1a. Your assumption is wrong. The official government position doesn’t equate border attacks to app ban. Please do read the official reason given.

1b. We’ve been running trade deficit with China and many other countries for quite some time, banning their product has never been about trade deficit control. Sure there might be ancillary benefit in reducing trade deficit, but that’s not the stated purpose.

1c. That’s not feasible, you can’t keep so called ‘diplomacy war’ at hold and come back to it later when you’ve met your domestic demand.

2. Well if you read the official position you’ll know that this has been an ongoing case, and I don’t deny the border issue provides impetus to do the needful. Doesn’t mean it’s populist

2a. Government is not ‘seeking clarification’ , the IT ACT rules mandates that the companies be given an opportunity to make representation. There’s a difference in that.

My only reason to engage in this healthy discussion was to let you know that never frame an opinion in haste. I personally am neither against nor for the app ban move. I will take my time in forming an opinion after knowing the facts of the case from both side. Being a future civil servant we all must ideally do the same.
