On a totally different note, Guys, I have given interview last year And again mains this year. My optional is sociology and I am still not very confident about it. Which test series would you suggest for sociology? I want to better my writing skills

Guys, need some advice

I have been preparing for the past two years. Appeared in both mains, last year and this year. But I am not really sure of clearing it this time as well. Thinking of taking up a job and continue the preparation alongside the job.

I want to know, whether it's feasible to prepare alongside a (9-5) job ? What are your thoughts on this ?

For me personally it seems difficult, but so is preparing for UPSC especially when the uncertainty keeps on increasing year after year.

@dancingminionTaking up a 9-5 job will be a good idea if the job is not too demanding(like in an IT company) and makes it possible for you to give atleast 4-5 hours to study daily....

Ps - same situation - 2 attempts,2 mains, unsure of clearing it this time as well

@dancingminionfrom personal experience, I would say that prelims can be done alongside job. Maybe take leave 10 days before pre. Mains is the stage where the kind of job you're in would make a difference. It will require at least a month off from your job (I know there are super talented people who have cleared despite taking such leave, but let's keep exceptions aside). Assuming you have decent command over your optional, preparing with job isn't an insurmountable task.

+1 bhai, I am from IT background so most likely will be taking a job in IT.
but after taking up a job focusing on both UPSC and job is difficult

It actually depends on the person. Imo, You can easily prep for prelims while working full time if you have cleared it twice. For mains try to take some days off before the paper. Frankly a 5 day week with 9 to 5 timings gives you a lot of time to study and focus only if you don’t have any other responsibilities and can keep off socialising.@dancingminion

@dancingminionDont take up IT job....u wont get time and even if u get thn also u wont be in a state of mind to focus on studies.
Personal experience hai....
If u can take up some other job toh acha rahega

@ShubzAfter the first three attempts, the amount of time you will actually devote to studies on any given day will anyways reduce drastically. Job can be a good idea. In fact, I have a strong opinion that being in a job brings a fresh perspective to your answers.

The only factor is that you should leave your job(mentally and physically) at 5. Nothing that drains your energy and Mains needs at least 2 months of dedicated preparation. So be mindful of leaves. Job pressure a month before mains will drive you to a mental breakdown. Telling from personal experience.

@ShubzI dont think cut off is going to decrease this year,it will hover around 780-790 mostly..U can just get a sample here only..Most of the people are expecting increase in their marks ,then how can cut off decrease ??

@Lonewolf
I too agree. Would dip by at the most 10 marks if indeed there is a dip.
Essay topic will compensate gs2 and gs3 to some extent.

@ShubzI cleared mains with 9 to 5 job in 2016, took only 15 days leave for mains. This year last attempt, never left job. Without my job also I would have devoted same no. of hours for studies.

History is pulling my progress back. Everytime. I'm scoring better than average in GS n Essay. Unable to go beyond 230 in History in any of my four attempts.

It's high time. I need to select another optional. Tried everything with history. And I guess, I shouldn't have remained adamant on pursuing with it, when average marks in other optional is above 260-270. I would have got interview call in each of my attempt even if I would have managed to get around 250.

@vvvikas0078212Bhai really good.. But don't you think following current affairs becomes hell difficult, with days when your are not able to do even newspaper with editorials piled up for weekend..This time before prelims Lok sabha Election duty fell on my head like an egg.. That phase was hell..

PS: Leave taking becomes an issue. And at times involves frustration, dejection andoutright discrimination.

Quoting from CCS Leave Rules(1972) Rule 32(4)
4) Government servants belonging to the Scheduled Castes or the Scheduled tribes may, for the purpose of attending the Pre-Examination Training Course at the centers notified by the Government from time to time, be granted extraordinary leave by Head of Department in relaxation of the provisions of sub-rule (2).

PS: Think for job only when u struggle to meet ur financial needs. And if you are not able to clear Mains consistently don't think about job rather give ur heart and soul

@STyes it is hectic and you need to be highly motivated to succeed. I failed in 2015 pre because I couldn't get leave. I work in private sector and financial security was my first priority. One should chose considering all pros and cons.
