@STnot at all bhai, as someone mentioned earlier that based on 3-4 easy questions we can't say paper was easy. Gs1 has wide ambiguity for society culture et. al. related questions, so can't be sure how it's interpreted by checker. Goodluck to all??

@Kira0705times like these I hope there's a hell in afterlife, for those people who analyse mains paper without ever appearing for mains exam.

@pmishra997125I too felt in the beginning that such type of papers are aimed to reduce the prominence of coaching centres, but one of my senior (IPS 2015) told me after 2017 paper that increasing randomness in papers whether prelim or mains, is only going to increase fear psychosis among aspirants, which is the basic mantra of coaching centres.
And looking at market trend, I couldn't agree more. Markets are infested with new materials each year and new coachings prop up every damn season.
Seeing these papers, new aspirants will jump for 3 different test series instead of 1, thinking that it'll help them cover 'all possible dimensions'.
Despite upsc's best intention, I feel it's not serving the desired objective..

@Champakdon't say that mate, completing all questions was the only positive thing in this mains for me?
P.S: there goes my last grain of hope...

FML! And here I thought papers were difficult..still, good for you dost..

2.9k views

@Champak, attesting the last part of your comment, I received 52 marks in 19q in gs2 full length vision, 15 days before the Mains and finally got 107. A friend of mine recieved 95 in same paper and finally got 92.
Man upsc is full of surprises. Year was 2017.

@DijkstraI have very similar experience, how did you score in gs2 and gs3 in 2017?

2.6k views

@Dijkstranice, goodluck for '19.

2.7k views

This query is open for anyone who may genuinely know the answer. My paper2 (law) did not go well; seeing the trend, across optionals one paper was considerably tougher. My question is, does UPSC take any measure for equalizing the effects between paper1 and paper2 or between aspirants of all optionals? Or it's majorly as it is, and quite probable one may recieve 150 and 100 respectively in each paper of optional.
While I realize no way to find out until april '2020, just here trying to seek some consolation in distress. Thanks in advance.

@John_Titorhahah, hi5!

2.7k views

@Joeyisthebestthat is interesting, in 2017 my paper 1 went really good and I had 140 while paper 2 was just okay and score 136. Barely any divergence, though it was a pleasant surprise then, not so sure of 2019. Thanks for replying.

@Yug_ kya kuch zyada farq padta hai? I mean is there any observed truth to the belief that lesser the people, greater the chance of better scores? I've heard such, but not a believer, yet.
My optional is law.

2.3k views

@sat_009that makes sense. Let me put my second dilemma, so my optional paper2 is giving me sleepless nights as it didn't go well for me. However, past experience shows that there is not much of variation in marks.
2017: p1-140 (paper went good) p2: 136 (paper was considerably below expectations)
Another acquintance's: p1- 125 (paper went good) p2: 119 (only 210 marks attempted and other answers also below average).

this has put me in a quandary as to how optional marking works..anybody with more experience is invited to explain this..

2.4k views

@K_9oh come on! With 120+ in pt, 160+ in essay and expecting 860/1500 in mains, where's the need for improvement?

2.2k views

@Chanakyabhai it wouldn't matter much if you had attempted all questions, without knowing much content. Little personal e.g for you: In 2017 my gs score was 91,107,94,85 and anybody writing mains that year can tell you this score is much much below average. It was my first mains and I was told attempt all questions, come what may! Now I hadn't read any newspaper or any ncert book, at all. I picked up mains365 and model answers, enrolled in 3 test series. Voila! I completed all answers and was quite positive about my performance too! Until I saw the marksheet, and I realized that completion of paper is important, but not as important as people make it to be. I barely knew 7-8 questions in each gs paper that year but had attempted all.
So, moral of the story is if u have written content in questions you attempted, stay positively hopeful! All the best to you!

2.2k views

@vvvikas0078212yes yes I agree, gs3 particularly was the anchor, more so considering the fact, 115+ was avg. in my friend circle. As for gs2, due to law degree I feel over ambitious, quite wrongly I suppose... ..this mains around, since I failed prelim last year so had better prep with newspaper editorials and ncert..knew roughly 13-14 questions with some credence..either way 7 mins for a answer, it is only a rat race, barely good enough time to provide unique analysis... solely my observation?
Worrying majorly due to law optional, paper 2?

2.1k views

@zombielandyes, that makes more sense..but the guidance I received then was more on the lines of "poora attempt karo, har haal mein" which I feel is more of a misguided advice, absent any caveats.

I have only one mains to compare with (2017-792 marks)..this time around .essay went fine, gs was like everyone else's, law paper 2 went not so good, so a bit of apprehension..what about you?

2.1k views

@sat_009thanks a ton! Funny thing is I can't remember how my optional paper 2 went in '17..the score was fine (136) and it didn't go well then either. I have seen 265-305 marks in law over the years, around my friend circle. Not less, never more. That's not very good but I think it's still decent for selection, may be?
Goodluck to you also. Keep holdin' that rope tight!?

2.1k views

@Ragsyar toppers kitne hee hote hain? I mean couple of us may get 560+ in gs, essay and feature in merit list. But that's just few tens of people, rather than a average performance..
And bhai I dis-liked because there are multiple assumptions made in that post, which may throw off an aspirant who has written only 1 or 2 Mains.. No hard feelings?
And bhai no it's not impossible to score that much. But it is quite impossible to predict that one will get 560/540, beforehand. Again, my best wishes to you.

Why is it that EWS is expected to be tooo low? I personally think it would be 10-12 marks down from UR but reading all these comments made me call couple of friends who have applied under EWS to ascertain..when I asked them if certificates were too difficult to be procured, both said they had submitted certificates, and believe most would have too, their logic- "yaar upsc mein kyu koi chance miss karega? Idhar Udhar Harr side jugaad krke submit kiye lekin time se pehle".
The other logic for low cutoff for ews that baaki exam me kam gya ka jawab na bhai mere paas hai na unke pas. Bas mujhe lagta hai upsc aur baki exam me zyada similarities nhi hongi.

Be it their PT or Mains Test Series, if you do their material you'll score good (100+ in pt; 85+ in gs mains)...tried and tested. Ese questions poochte hain test series mein ki matlab original exam clear krne ke chances reduce ho jate hai.
But kyuki darr sabko lagta hai (including myself) every year 50pc toppers would have attempted their test series, thereby giving them legitimacy, when the result is declared... vicious cycle hai baba?

P.S: I had 52 in Gs2 and 54 in Gs3 at Vision, 15 days before exam, finally 107 in gs2 and 94 in gs3 (mains '17)

@pysh12950karlo bhai. Kyuki sab karte hain. 2-3 questions bhi aagye Mains365 se toh baki logo ko edge mil jayega.
That's the only reason why most people do Mains 365...also, psychological satisfaction. In my opinion monthly magazines could be skipped, but then again I am just an aspirant like everyone else..better still if a selected person answers such question?

@atuljibut 90s in 2015-16-17-18 mains would mean very different each year. So it does boil down to marking...my limited experience agrees with the general understanding that says essay ethics optional is the key... etc. Also, can't comment on paper completion in itself how effective it is since I did get 90s when almost everyone around my got 110+ in gs3 in '17. So content is indeed the King!

@utkarsh_mishraI do agree with the essence of your comment, but would still want to say from personal experience that getting 100 in Vision Tests isn't that difficult either when 18 out of 20 questions are from Mains365 across gs2 and gs3 full length, i've written over 30+ tests in 3 years time and concluded this. Along with inputs from fellow aspirants at test center... this time around I did get 90+ in Vision consistently but am honestly not positive considering the kind of questions UPSC asks and what these coaching wallahs sell us...

@atuljiI earnestly hope you're right and I am proved wrong☺
I do have examples of people score 90+ consistently in test series and receiving 65 in gs1, 82 in gs2 type marks...

2.1k views

@utkarsh_mishrayes, I do see your point. I just have a hard time accepting Vision scores and UPSC scores as linked in any way...Once bitten, twice shy.

2.1k views

@zombielandmostly people do that, reading model answers, taking breaks etc. This person is a good friend, didn't do those things but yes, he did give most tests at his room instead of centre..still I don't think it would matter so much so to reduce 30 marks across papers, considering many toppers also write from home..

2.1k views

@ranyo_asoka60 toh thoda zyada lag rha hai bhai..! But some people spend 30 mins with a test and count it attempted toh kuch bol nhi sakte...
'17 mains se pehle, result k baad gs ke 28 ke around, (insight vision vaji) and optional k 8 likhe the... but sabse kam bhi mere gs mein hee aye?sab moh maaya hai?

2.1k views

@pysh12950correct.. but I meant my comment for mains test series only, (not whole upsc prep., strategy or likelihood of selection) I definitely believe it's farcical and borderline fraudulent.. Next attempt onwards, will practice pyq of 5 years but won't join any test series
