The 10% quota is applied to total number of vacancies, IE. 10% of 896= 90. So out of 450 seats fir UR , the effective number of seats for general category will be 360. Still even if you want to enter top services, then this will be meaningless. I mean suppose you get a rank of 75 and IAS closes at 70, you'll still get IPS/IFS/IRS etc, so effectively those who get a rank between 360-450 would anyways not be getting good services. I know many people are willing to enter any service, and I see that it's unfair for them , but if you're aspiring to be an IAS/IPS/IFS then this 10% EWS reservation should not be our concern.
@zombielandyeah I think I remember that when govt introduced EWS reservation they mentioned that all vacancies in jobs and educational institutions will be increased in proportion to ensure that seats reserved for general category are not reduced. So perhaps this increase in seats from last year is just to balance out the EWS seats.
@ranyo_asokasuccess to Abhi utni hi door hai jitni door cutoff hai

I didn't qualify for 2018 mains but yeah I could observe a very distinct difference in 2019 mains as compared to last year's papers. Questions required broader perspective, so i feel no-one could've addressed all dimensions adequately, so that's bound to make some decline in cutoff, but I want to ask those who've appeared for mains before as well->is it possible that our predictions of lower cutoffs is just wishful thinking? Because some of the answers that I've come across here show that yes definitely some people did have a broad enough perspective to address the demands of questions, as it goes with UPSC,our competition is not with the ones behind but with the ones ahead of us
@dr-ahmednaaz8567thanks doctor saab for taking out time for such a thorough reply. Hopefully we'll all sail through this hurdle
@Neyawnthanks sir

@ranyo_asokagreat spotting bro
@RagsI guess it works both ways, usually people tend to overemphasize on optionals because they account for 500/1750 marks in mains, so focusing more on it makes sense. But also if you're preparation for prelims and current affairs has been upto the mark, then you can also ace in is GS papers. But that becomes a bit challenging because GS papers include a very wide spectrum of subjects and need to be updated thoroughly and regularly, but still it's not impossible. I've read about a guy who scored over 500 cumulatively in all GS papers. Last year also I think highest score in GS papers was 468.
So the choice comes down to this I think- focus on specific syllabus of optionals and ace it, or focus adequately on all and prepare for GS papers throughout. I guess people are not able to maintain this tempo that's required to cover all aspect of g's syllabus throughout the year, so most of us follow a lopsided approach and emphasize more on optionals.
Not to get political but guys look at what happened. Kanhaiya and Umar Khalid were not just random students, they were members of JNU Students Union. The event was organised by Jnusu, these slogans were being chanted enmasse in their very presence. It's irrelevant whether they were chanting these slogans themselves or not. As a citizen of India you expect them to put an end to such sloganeering, which they did not. Umar Khalid even advocated their stand later.
Now put yourself in place of Kanhaiya, and imagine what would have been your response- that's the difference between anti nationalists and nationalists.
@TeddyWestsidei guess you can call them the real "misguided citizens of India"
@TeddyWestsideI'm not certifying anybody bhai, I'm just saying these individuals who voted for Kanhaiya may not have been fully aware of the facts of the event.
Also on a similar logic, Gopal Kanda just won an election from Sirsa, does it mean he's not a criminal or that people who voted for him are criminals? No.
Similarly begusarai election cannot be a referendum on Kanhaiya's patriotism, his response during the 2016 protests in JNU should be the benchmark for that.now such a distinction is bound to get political anyways, but still I'll ask you to put yourself in his place and think how would you have reacted to Such slogans, especially when you're accountable as student union member.
@TeddyWestsideI agree to your point bhai, we are not judges and his actions do not amount to sedition legally. But i guess if we talk about Kanhaiya we have to account for commission or omission of his acts.there is no such legally defined category of anti-national, but does his response reflects his stand on India's integrity? Does it reflect his stand on Kashmir? I'm sure you are qualified to be the judge of thatKhair I think this discussion is dead now, so we should go back to speculations
@TeddyWestsideon this I agree with you wholeheartedly my friend.
@sernihilolike last year mains examinations got over on 7 October i guess, and result was declared on 20th december.this year mains exam got over on 29sept, so if all things remain the same, then result can be expected to be declared by sometime around 14th December.
@DKTbro I'm on your sideI'm against Kanhaiya, Umar and especially Afzal guru
@SabChangaSisir, suppose you have a function/meeting at your home about any issue, let's say on article 370. You find that some people start chanting anti India slogans at the event. Would you let them speak their minds or atleast ask them to stop or else tell them to leave from the event. I'm not saying Kanhaiya shouted these slogans, coz to be frank Maine nhi dekha. But as union leaders who were organising the event, it was their responsibility to stop it, which they didn't do. It's not about expressing your point of view, it's about respect for nation's integrity. As a serving officer, I don't think I'm qualified to tell you what it means, you know it better than others I believe
Kya yaar, mera bhi around 140 marks ka miss hua hai gs 1,2&3 main.(1st mains appearance)@DKTsahab ki baatein sunkr thoda confidence badha, ki 840-850 takk kheench lunga shayad. Tum sabne wapas zameen par laa diyastill thanks for bringing me back to reality and carrying on with my prayers.
Love, not so confident guy
@Biryanimafia_thanks bro, I haven't lost hopecompletely.itwas just this flicker of joy within me when I first read about DKTs experience. Even I was repeatedly told to attempt all questions but during the exam I realised that compromising on stuff that you know about inorder to write gibberish on stuff you don't know cannot be a useful policy. Anyways it's important to stay grounded as well motivated to move forward. That's what I'm hoping to do
@ranyo_asokaforumite hu bhai
I don't think there's anything wrong in mentioning Muslim league. You have to consider that a separate nation became their demand only after 1940. The question asks about many voices that strengthened nationalist movement, so that includes all groups who defined nationalism for themselves and for others in a manner distinct from the conventional definition of Congress. So revolutionaries, communists, communalists,peasant and worker class movements,etc all of them had distinct aspirations defining independence and what it would mean to them
@ManchesterUnitedyeah even I mentioned only civilian, tribal and sepoy uprisings before 1857
@Thoroughly_ScrewedBawa why so negative from the word go?
"Humko maloom hai Jannat ki Haqeeqat Lekin, Dil behlaane Ko Ghalib ye khayaal achcha hai"
We only have time till the mains result to relax, after that it's either back to preparations for next attempt or for interview. Do you really want to spend that time spewing such negativity?
@Thoroughly_Screwedno issues with me bro, as long as it's just for fun
@ranyo_asokaye to universal rule hai bhai, "it's okay if you do it as long as you don't get caught"
@TheHobbitit would have been better if you'd written the translation in English, but anyway I don't think any marks will be deducted, though you may not be rewarded adequately for the quote as well
My insider told me that entire evaluation process was finished a couple of weeks ago. But the pendrive from which the results were to be uploaded got infected with virus as they were uploading it. (They think it was the reason behind kudankulam nuclear plant malware attack.) Now they're hoping it's a common cold otherwise they'll have to redo the evaluation since the pendrive is the only record maintained(for secrecy purpose).
So result may come on 1st December or next year, there's no in between.

@pra7009055even I've left a lot of questions ( not left exactly, couldn't manage the time). But this guy here is my Hero. He attempted approximately 15 questions only in all GS papers and got around 90 in all of them. So yeah, it's possible to get a decent score after leaving a few questions.but that depends on how much you get in questions that you've attempted.
So can you get a decent score after leaving a few questions? Yes
Can you not get a decent score after completing all papers? Evidently yes.
Do you get an edge if you complete the paper? Definitely yes, you miss 100% of the shots that you don't take.
Hope this eases your nerves. Happy hunting
@kochikaamewe all need to trip on jadibooti( kyunki Himalaya to jaa nhi skte) to jadibooti se hi reset krlo
@bevancomit's true. If you want to clear UPSC you have to cut off from the world. It's irrelevant whether you join a coaching institute or not.i know people who come to Delhi from far away and don't even get to see their family for months(for few,it can also be years). Even I prepared on my own, while staying at home. And like you I'm from a decent engg college (If DTU can be called decent), and that's the reason why people like us can think about preparing on our own for this exam. At the same time,there are many who didn't receive this privilege.i've seem notes from coaching institutes, and I'm sure no-one can clear UPSC,by following them.its totally useless, yet important to bring people who didn't go to fancy colleges at par with the level UPSC expects.
This exam requires hard and smart work both, no one can do it without either.and yet there are many who do it all and yet fail to cross the final barrier. By your conviction, I'm sure you've worked hard,like so many of us, and there are many who have to boast in or ridicule others at this platform to feed their ego. But value your hardwork more than what such people say .We are all literally on the edge as the D-DAY approaches. I only wish we can be supportive of each other and don't belittle others.
In words of Tywin Lannister, jugglers and singers require applause, you are a Lannister. Agar hum mehnat krte hai, to wo is exam ko clear krne k liye hoti h.kisi ko neecha dikhaane ya applause lene k liye nhi.
Also I'm addressing this to you because I can see you've been targeted unnecessarily, and that's because of your belief that you've worked harder than others, which in my opinion is disrespectful of the effort put in by those who haven't worked as hard as you. Baaki I love writing long essays too?
@bevancomI assumed you would be familiar with Game of Thrones,being an engineer after all. He's an important character in the show
@zombielandtg pe bol rahe hain optional ki scaling chal Rahi hai...huge gains for geography and hindi lit. Results can be declared anyday after this Friday, latest by 13th
@RealMangomatlab?
@RealMangonaah man, I just got hooked to this song during my commute to centre during mains exams, har din subah yahi gana
@dr-ahmednaaz8567agreed.Coaching institutes have captured almost all competitive exams, it's no longer a competition of intellect but a competition of means. Those who can afford fancy coaching easily sail through with minimum effort. The same Cannot be said about UPSC and that's what makes it's integrity indisputable. All hail the lords and ladies of UPSC who play God and let humans decide their own fate through hardwork and intellect.
@vvvikas0078212I think that our focus on manufacturing sector as panacea for growth and employment is misplaced. Although it's true that we need to promote this sector to absorb the excessive labour force in agriculture, still that doesn't mean that we can ignore the growth of agricultural sector, which has been struggling for decades now.IMO, while we aim to achieve these low hanging fruits through manufacturing sector, we need a coherent long term policy focusing on primary sector as well. There's a reason why it's called primary, because it's multiplier effects are reflected in secondary and tertiary sector. So I feel agriculture has to be the prime moving force of our economy
@vvvikas0078212indeed. Other sector's growth has to be driven by agriculture. Value addition is a good way, apart from that increasing industry linkages with rural areas is also a crucial step. Another step that we should consider is that we should make an objective assessment of our food grain production. For example we export nearly 150% of our domestic rice consumption, which has little scope for value addition. Moving toward crops like guar gum, maize, millets, will be useful in cutting down the costs of production and provide greater scope for value addition.but yield per unit area is lower for these, so there will be need to diversify rural agrarian economy as well. Apiculture, cattle, fishery ponds etc can also be useful in this endeavour. And most importantly, these will require lesser capital investments, which can probably mangaed at local tier govt levels with adequate planning.
@hirockyrocks7101yeah that was my point. That it has been officially declared as pmf yet it's not getting the due importance, especially during the present , where we are looking for quick gains.

@dancingminionfull on. Latest prediction- 10th Dec 5PM
"You found yourself in your struggle. The truth is what you came for, and you found it within your strife."
It's surprising how we often find inspiration in the least likely places, and how moments of struggle bring out the best in all of us. This quote is from Brooklyn nine nine, and I think this is only apt for tonight. Also, while awaiting for the dreaded mains result, we all found a reason that's going to make us push harder, irrespective of the outcome. And those of us who still feel jittery, guys it's okay to take your time as long as you reach your goal.
P.S. after reading these messages, I deleted telegram. I'm done speculating when that PDF will become, I'm now prepared for whatever is in store for me.
Cheers guys, and All the best, for the results and life
India has seen numerous issues which had divided the country sharply at that time. Land reforms, reservations, reorganisation of provinces,Shah Bano case just to name a few. However in the long run, we have to accept that these decisions were taken only after following the democratic process, and hence, we should look beyond our individual comfort, both physical and psychological, and accept these as the will of the people.
Now coming to the present, article 370,NRC,CAB and most importantly Hindutva have been a fundamental element of BJP-RSS agenda. These big steps have been taken just after elections, probably because these were the major issues on which BJP has fought elections consistently and getting an increased majority validates their claim that this is the will of the people. Now we can say that elections were hijacked by superficial issues, or that BJP benefitted from a weak opposition, but I guess the fact is that elections are the only way to determine the will of the people, atleast in the present circumstances.
More specifically, CAB is a law and hence can be reformed if that indeed is the will of people, after the next elections. Also it's not a blanket provision, rather it's an ad hoc measure which is limited to immigrants who entered India before 31st Dec 2014. Now the countries and communities that it's limited to is purely under the prerogative of government, and can be extended later on to other communities and countries as per the will of the people.
We are at a stage in history where several notions which were considered infallible a few decades ago are being challenged and contested. So it becomes imperative that as citizens we behave in a responsible democratic manner, just imagine what would have been the history of India if any of the groups/individuals had reacted to the issues of Shah Bano, reservation,land reforms etc the way some people are trying to portray this CAB.
@dancingminionbhai I acknowledge that there is a sense of insecurity among Muslims. But just think about it objectively, CAB and NRC are directed towards outsiders hai na? No Indian citizen needs to bother about them. Moreover NRC, Ayodhya, Triple Talaq these are all supreme court mandated steps right.
So yaar I feel, and again this is a one-sided opinion I know, that the insecurity in Muslims is being caused by misinformation, atleast with respect to the above mentioned steps. We need to build trust among them, that the government is bound to treat all its citizens equally, and any government which tries to undermine this will be held accountable. Till now I fail to see any direct action against any particular community taken by this government, we need to assure them that this will continue.i won't take names, but it's evident that there are few individuals and parties who benefit from this insecurity and therefore actively contribute towards fear mongering.
@utkarsh_mishra1) CAB excludes many communities-, apart from Muslims but i can understand that's the message that's being spread around. But most importantly, it doesn't concern or infringe upon right of any citizen of India, am I right ?
2) Rohingya are the most persecuted minority, true, and India will continue to deal with refugee status demands on a side by case basis. The question is here about citizenship and not refugee status.
3) redundant and speculative so I'll not reply to this.
@utkarsh_mishraalso I think you're confusing state government of Kerala with govt of India, GOI has no role to play in Sabrimala issue as it falls under the jurisdiction of the former. But please do share with me any source which mentions otherwise or states that govt of India opposed the sc judgement. I'll be happy to concede this point
@utkarsh_mishrabhai how many communities are facing persecution across the globe? I think you want to suggest that we provide citizenship to all?
Myanmar has not been included in the bill, and Rohingya influx issue has already been described as detrimental to national security by intelligence agencies.Ofcourse you can say that they're lying, I won't comment on that
The CAB doesn't affect the right of indian muslim citizens in any way. Do you concede this? And yes, the government has the right to choose who it extends citizenship to and on what grounds. And if people of India feel that it should be extended to Rohingyas as well, then I expect people will vote accordingly, and elect MPs who'll extend this provision. As for the present, CAB and NRC were key planks of ruling party's agenda and they can perfectly claim that it's supported by the nation
@utkarsh_mishrabhai is there a difference between government of India and a political party ? Please think about this
@utkarsh_mishrabhai please refrain from enforcing your version of morality on others, that's how you become an extremist.( Take it in friendly spirit)
Other communities that are excluded- Jews, Baha'i and many other minorities*
@Dreadful103 seats have been increased- leftovers from 2018 recruitment,that much is confirmed. They even released the new break-up of total seats service wise
@atuljiyaar I saw the sheet on telegram, somebody posted the pic on this group also, a little while ago
@John_TitorI'm sure you're aware that NRC CAB were in BJP's election manifesto, right? They repeatedly told everyone that if we win, we'll be bringing CAB and NRC. The opposition repeatedly told everyone that if BJP wins they'll be bringing CAB and NRC. Not sure whether the examples of Nehru and Indira that you used fall in the same category(that the policies that they're criticised for were explicitly in their manifesto or was their electoral plank).And the ones who voted for them, their so called constituency, are also citizens of this country who have a right to decide the future of this nation. Now I completely agree with you that democracy is not just about majoritarianism, but what more it is for, is for the people to decide themselves, not you or me. Thats why we have elections, to take decisions that we as individuals cannot.
Also, we all have a right to criticize, condemn and even protest against what we feel is wrong. But that doesn't justify demonizing someone you don't agree with. If BJP listened to me, I'd tell them the same thing, stop demonizing your enemies.
Don't make it an existential crisis, or something which is being forced upon this nation. You don't agree with it, it's okay, and yet there are millions of others who do agree with it. Now you may know better, but I guess that's what freedom means, the freedom to make your own mistakes ( even if I concede that what BJP is doing is a mistake).
And I'm feeling that this debate is getting a bit hostile so I suggest everyone should stop tagging individuals and address your views to this platform collectively.
Many of us have raised a concern about linking NRC and cab, but the two are very different things.
I think the Assam example has proved that Hindus face just as much risk of being excluded from NRC as Muslims. The contention is that Hindus will get citizenship back through cab while Muslims will be excluded. This is not the case my friends.
For a Hindu/Sikh/Jain/Buddhist/Christian/Parsee to get back citizenship through CAB, he'll have to prove that he is a citizen of Afghanistan, Pakistan or Bangladesh and that he entered India before 31st December 2014. How can anybody think that proving this is easier than proving your indian citizenship?
@VivekanandSanudeep durishetty ( AIR 1 2017).
Gave in all 5 attempts, 2 Interviews. The first time he gave interview he got IRS and then I think he failed to qualify mains for the next 2 times. In his 5th attempt and 2nd interview, he topped.
