@CaesarStructure matters more than the content I think. I suppose there are marks for every part like 1 mark for intro 1 for conclusion and division of marks for every sub part of a question. Those who sacrifice structure by being innovative tend to lose out.
@STNo. But that would explain how some first attempters get good marks while many with 4-5 attempts don't. I saw toppers' copies like tina dabi's, rank 2 last year. Pedestrian content but strictly followed what was asked in the question. Moreover that would make sense. As content richness is highly subjective and upsc would want to be as objective as possible in its checking.

@ChampakNo. I think quality of answer writing has improved. In 2013 vision insights were just starting. Plus the new format in 2013 meant nobody knew what constituted a "good answer". Today we can see how toppers write, what fetches marks and what does not. We subsequently modify our answer writing according to that. Gaurav agrawal had no baseline to compare himself with.

@Kira0705Intro body conclusion is a broad format. Sometimes people try to rigidly stick to their own set formats instead of answering what the question specifically asks.
For example - In one of ethics case study this year, there was a question on consequences of politicization of bureaucracy. Only the consequences were asked. Not the reasons, not the "way forward or solutions". Still many candidates try to be innovative, solution oriented by putting in a way forward. Address the question. Nothing more. Nothing less.

@PhagocyteThere is no ideal way to "reflect" upon the mains exam unlike prelims unless someone has left out questions in which case they probably need to work on their writing speed. Issue is these discussions try to come up with novel points that are hard to think of during exams. Even a candidate with basic knowledge clears because they don't introspect everything they have written. Just basic stuff relevant to the question. Tina dabi topped the exam writing 2-3 points for each question. Further, content richness is subjective. All that matters is relevance of the content to the question and the structure.
@Yes_I_am_inSubjective answers mei there is no one right way to answer the question. Upsc is liberal in that respect and accepts multiple interpretations. In 2016 there was an essay on the lines of "development should be engendered". Engender in english has zero correlation with gender. Yet upsc gave full marks to those construed it in terms of gender inclusive development. So relax.

@foxmulderStructure has to be always according to the question. Intro sub-headings for each part that question demands, conclusion. Absolutely no need to shove a "way forward" where it is not asked.
@STFormulating a "content rich answer" is first of all - subjective and second of all, difficult in the given time frame. What matters essentially is adherence to the demands of each part of a question. If content was truly the king we'd see a larger percentage of oldies getting selected. However that is not the case, many newbies such as akshat jain, tina dabi get good marks despite pedestrian content.

@HaeckelWell I guess it is not the issue with answer writing as such but the flawed argument that answer writing is quintessential for success in mains. I read on insights that those who are not practising answer writing should automatically consider themselves out of the race. This is not true. Need for answer writing varies from person to person. Some people need it while others don't and over the course of this arduous upsc journey each person figures out whar approach suits them the best. Each approach needs to be respected and not be dismissed or ridiculed.

Test copy evaluations are mostly rubbish. I wrote a visionias test on gs paper 2 polity part and there was a question on separation of powers. Somewhere in it I specified how president is a part of the executive as well as legislature (overlapping of personnel- given in laxmikanth as well as visionias value added material) but the checker wrote as a correction "Please don't write factually incorrect information - president is not a part of legislature" and I was like kahan se pakad ke laate hain aise namoone copy check karne ke liye
@ranyo_asokaNo- by toppers' copy i did not mean good copies that vision ias uploads after every test. Those are useless. I mean copies of actual toppers uploaded by vision - like those of kanishk kataria, akshat jain, srushti deshmukh etc. I looked at atleast copies of 20 toppers from 2015 16 17 18 to try to understand how good answers are to be written.

@RavsI don't think that's the case. Content matters. In 2017, they first time changed the marking pattern from each 12.5 marks questions to 10 10 markers and 10 15 markers. I didn't notice it in GS-1. So I took my own time in completing 10 markers. Then I saw there were 3 pages for Q 11-20 which were of 15 marks. No way I could've completed the paper if I filled all the pages. So i just addressed demands of the question and wrote 2-2 1/4th pages for 15 markers. For 2 15 markers I wrote barely 1 1/2 pages. Yet ended up with 105 (above avg) in GS-1 and personal highest in all 4 GS papers.
@bevancomThe question was on primary healthcare and not health in general. Hope you stuck to primary health. I personally didn't have enough top drawer content on primary healthcare so skipped that one.

I wrote on biased media but I don't know why people are considering it out of the box. So much to write - media bias against the poor, women, lower castes, disabled, LGBTQ, climate change and media, murdochization. How all this threatens the democratic fabric.

@bevancomPartially agree. Some people overdo answer writing and test series. Nevertheless test series does have its uses. I wrote vision abhyas and in the 1st test of Paper 1 I was able to write only 16 answers. Had I written the first test in exam hall itself I would've left atleast 3 questions per paper. What test series and questions do is that they activate the "browsing mode" in your brain which can help one in retrieving information faster. This immensely helps in increasing speed. But yes, I also believe 10 tests are sufficient.

@mounikamouni24-h944Mostly not. What matters is addressing all parts of a question. There were 4 pages given in some GS 3 questions this year. It was a potential trap. I anyway had the content for only 3 pages. But yes, if you fill 1 page for a 15 marker, then you can't expect exceptional marks in that answer.

@zombielandI'd like to present a different viewpoint. The nature of questions that upsc is asking in mains often means that no one is sure what constitutes a "top answer" in terms of content richness and relevance. Further, 7 papers means a lot of subjectivity can creep in at every stage.
As for the optionals, the logic that those who get 300+ know after the paper that their papers went well is also questionable atleast for the humanities subjects. For example - in my optional sociology - several questions in paper 2 were out of syllabus like interlinking of rivers, global warming, demonetization etc. Even those who do get 300+ this year, wouldn't be sure how to answer such questions.
So yes, after a certain point, i do believe even toppers don't know what to expect.

@StarkHouseDefine 'highly probable candidates'. I know two people one with 6th attempt and 3 interviews another with 4th attempt and 2 interviews and both their names are not there.
@StarkHouseThe people I know also cleared 2018 mains. One by 40 marks, the other by 45. Both got done in the interviews. Infact already selected candidates have a lesser probability statistically of making it again in the very next attempt.

Fuhrer's dot came around 11 am on 18th december through his alias as John Constantine on tg and fuhrer on discussion forum. That evening a fake pdf did release but it was the one in which even roll numbers of those who didn't clear pre were there. So it was an obvious fake and immediately discredited.
The "most genuine of fake pdfs" over which people have been arguing over and which also has been discredited was released on 20th dec in the evening. Even the date on that fake pdf is of 20th dec.

@Hakunah_MatataAur subject toppers need not be very good in general awareness. Upsc filters them out at the prelims stage itself. There are only a handful who are good at GA as well as their optionals. Hence expectations of checkers are not as strict as someone who checks MA papers of sociology in JNU.

@Valar_morghulisIt is a good idea. This year, in January, I ran a marathon. It was freezing cold and early in the morning at 6. Purpose was only to finish that marathon no matter what. Since it was going to be my 5th attempt I sort of needed that feeling of finishing a task that I started and that set me up nicely for the whole year. Travelling and adventure sports are similar. You'll return with an even greater zeal.

Abhi pre mei bhi on 12th july he said result would come today and it came in the evening. However, he did put in a caveat that results CAN come sooner too ("kuchh keh nahi sakte jaldi bhi aa sakta hai but 15-20 din maan kar chalo" - make of that what you will)
@abhiWhich attempt? If you are going to take a break, you should know exactly where and what to improve on. I also took a break in 2016 and 2018 but only because I thought I needed a lot of improvement in mains after looking at my mains marksheet. But if you are only starting, then first you need to know where you stand and for that you shouldn't skip one year.

There is no such "deciding factor" in GS. Especially not 5 questions out of 70+. Even those who have screwed up these 4-5 questions can cover up by attempting the remaining well. Sabki apni strengths hoti hain where they feel they can maximize their score.

Seeing@DKTmarks scared the shit out of me.I attempted all the questions in all papers and even wrote decent in socio fir bhi gs mein 390 hi laga rahe hain aur socio mein 300 lagane mein bhi dar lag raha hai..
DKT bhai to 200 ka chod ke 871 laga rahe hain..

Bhai idher poore attempt karne ke baad 780 cross nahi ho rahe. Haalat behad naazuk hai. Paper kaise hue tab pata chale jab answers yaad ho. Wo bhi bhool gaya ki kya likh ke aaya tha
@kochikaameBhai mains clear ho jaye to bhi mai khush ho jaunga. Atleast ab interview tak pohochne waalo ko govt job milne ki chance rehti hai like in sports authority. But I get your point, final list mei naam na hona dardnaak hota hai
@DKTIss baar UPSC ne railways ko bhi beat kar diya hai. Atleast railways intimation to deti hai at regular intervals. Upsc wo bhi nahi deti. Log satta rahe the december mei ki kab result aaega.
