Mains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread

@dancingminion- If all are avg answers then you can expect max 80 marks. if 6-7 are good, then you get around 100.

I was happy after all papers except Geography paper 1 as first 4 answers are wrong.

@HaeckelAgree.

@BrickTrue
250 to 270 is not bad score in optionals, if your performance is good in GS + Essay. In fact, it doesn’t stop you from selection even if you get 60-70 marks less than toppers.

As we know there will be a difference of 100 marks always between 1st and 250th rank, which is sufficient to get IPS, IRS & IAAS?

1.9k views

@Yug_ Find the service-wise last rank below as per last year data for general category

  1. IPS - 235
  2. IRS - 264
  3. IAAS - 274
  4. IRTS - 348

I have just taken average of last few years and around 250 Rank is OK to get good service which includes IPS. You can check data of last 6 years for more details.
One more point, there is only 1 mark difference between Rank 232 and rank 251 - as per last year data.

1.9k views

Why we are targeting to score more marks like 300 in optionals only. My optional is Geography. Now a days even in optionals we see many generic questions.
And, why it is not possible to score equally in all 7 papers (+-20 marks)?
Is it not possible to avoid over dependency on optionals?

1.9k views

@ChanakyaAgree with you.

One more point – most of the GS papers syllabus covers as part prelims only. So we should not let it go waste by focusing too much on optionals.
Good strategy is mixture of both - target for 130 marks in optionals and around 100 to 105 marks in GS papers and remaining in Essay.

Note - These are just targets. Actuals may vary from person to person based on strategies.

1.9k views

Few are good in theory and few are good in multiple choices. It is not possible for one to be best at all places always.
Most of the toppers including Tina Dabi cleared prelims with just a mark more than cut off.
I feel prelims is tougher than mains always.

1.9k views

@vvvikas0078212It will be close to 1000, if you score around 180 in interview, otherwise Increase GS avg to 110 to be on safar side. Or score more in Essay paper.

1.9k views

@vvvikas0078212then need to score 15-20 more in GS it self.

1.9k views

Thanks all for your valid comments.

You mean, same answer and content fetches more marks in Geography optional than GS1, if same question comes in both the papers.
Means optional papers evaluation is liberal always? Doesn’t depend on person who evaluates and other factors?

Everyone has right to speak about army man and nationalism. Because we respect and love it though we are not in army. Will be ready to sacrify life if time comes. Jai Hind.

1.9k views

@SabChangaSiIn fact few are hurting us badly by supporting anti national elements. Democracy doesn't mean will speak whatever we want.
I say anti national if someone says India teray 1000 tukade hongey. I too have my right here to speak in favour of my country. How can we tolerate if someone speaks wrong about India.

1.9k views

@SabChangaSiGo through discussion from page no 168 for examples.

1.8k views

@SabChangaSiSir Ji. No one is politician in this forum?
And no one is going to take law in hand.

Evidences are there against many JNU students, but matter was not that much serious and it can ruin students careers. That's why court just warned. However it doesn't come under sedition.

Debate is just matter of ethics and feeling.

Let's close this topic for now.

@K_9
I have been working as project manager in one of the IT company since last 11 years and I know how to manage and work with people impartially who are coming from different places and mindsets.
I know my strengths and weakness.
It's really surprising few people stand in first row to give advices that too without asking?

1.8k views

Not sure why few people wants to behave like lawyers to take a stand of anti-national elements (let's consider it is just opinion).
I'm not pointing out any individual from this forum right. But you are pointing out me repeatedly and giving unnecessary suggestions - I already told 4 times so far to stop discussion on this point.

That was my feeling and just added a line there. You consider your-self great, intelligent and worthy to manage all situations, then ignore my comment and go ahead, instead of running behind it.
Give advice if someone asks you. If you are not interested, just ignore and go ahead as you know how to respect all.

1.8k views

Your comments doesn't seems worthy for me. Don't advice me going forward.

1.8k views

You only told to ignore it in your previous comments if someone comments instead of reacting too much. Why you are running behind it repeatedly now?
Are you really working in CRPF or just....

@SabChangaSiLogical conclusion 2019 may hogaya on nationalism with 303 MPs – because most of the people voted for nationalism and corruption free India in 2019.

Ab hamaray discussion say konsa conclusion nikalnevala hai?

Need to wait till 2024 - There entire nation participates for next logical conclusion --- not just 5-10 members like us.

1.8k views

@SabChangaSiWe are taking about nationalism, not individualism of 1 or 2.
Coming to my point - I don't change my stand even if I'm alone. I cannot waste my time now. byeee

1.8k views

Yes 2-3 good papers takes score above 810.

2.1k views

@sat_009It will be close to last year cut off + or - 10 marks

2.2k views

@dr-ahmednaaz8567Few optional paper 1 also difficult like in Geography when compared to last year paper.

1.8k views

@DKTThanks for detailed explanation

1.8k views

@pmishra997125Don't change it, if you get 300+ again this time.

1.8k views

@pmishra997125Correct, but I can't suggest you to change it as you are scoring around 300.

1.8k views

Both ways works – but it depends on your strategy

  1. Target few questions for which you have good content and leave couple of questions for which you have nothing to write
  2. Attempt all if you know at least 1-2 points in each -- write some basic info like definition, pros & cons in short (just take half page), but don’t bluff.
  3. Don’t leave questions if you have 2-3 points ready, complete them in short and move to other questions quickly - that will help you fetch 2 marks easily.
1.8k views
  • Cut off will be around 775 for general and around 735 for OBC
  • 815+ is safe score to be in final list for general.
1.8k views

@ranyo_asokaNo. It is just my opinion.

1.8k views

Forum may itna sannata kyun hai bhai

1.9k views

@sat_009I too agree on this. At least 15 people from this forum may get more than 800 marks.

1.8k views

I feel - at least 2-3 from this forum will be in top100 final list.

1.8k views

I heared like about 10-12% people fails every year to clear language papers. Is it true.

1.7k views

What is the process UPSC follows to normalise optional marks of different optionals.

1.8k views

@AzadHindFauzYes. There should be some common papers instead of optionals

1.8k views

I did not do well in geography optional paper 1, specially first 4 questions in PART 1 and I’m OK with remaining answers and satisfied with PART 2.
But problem is with the 2 blunders that I did initially in the paper - Evapotranpiration And Sandspits & tombolos --- completely wrong, but I filled 1.5 pages - I didn't feel wrong while writing.
And 2 more below average answers – Phreatic eruption and Amensalism

How does it impacts, please clarify. Is it still possible for 130 marks? I will be very happy If I get between 115 to 130 in Paper 1, because I did well in all other papers.
How much I can expect in this case?
Did anyone come across such situations - if yes, how much did you get in your previous attempts?

1.8k views

@vvvikas0078212GRR ??

1.8k views

@vvvikas0078212Yes, but I do not remember what I have written for NRR, and explained true replacement level. Let's consider this one also average. Apart from this, remaining are above average - I hope so.

Request you all to share honest feedback on this and max marks can be expected in the following case - all 20 and 15 markers and 4 - 10 markers written well or above average.

1.8k views

@vvvikas0078212I have written exact answer for this -- No issues there.

1.8k views

@vvvikas0078212are you kidding me?
I'm expecting around 120 - I'm happy with that.
Let me know lower bound.
Did you come across such situations - I'm scared because first 4 answers may give negative impression - and it may impact 1-2 marks in each?
Clarify on this.

1.8k views

@vvvikas0078212Paper 2 is not so great, but OK for me. Will get around 135.
What about you. How much you are expecting in P1 & P2.

1.8k views

Below is just one more possible way. It may not work for all.

420 is possible in GS papers, 100-105 in 1st 3 GS papers and 115-120 in ethics – because it is the easiest paper which can really fetch good marks if someone done well.
And 135 in Essay that takes score to 555. Now lets see Optionals -

Case 1: UR – Need to score around 260, then total would be 815
Case 2: OBC – 225 is also fine, that takes their score to 780. But if they want IAS, then need to score around 240 in optionals and little more in eassy.

1.8k views

@Biryanimafia_Do not dis-like it yaar. I'm just sharing my honest feelings?

If we check toppers marks, they are getting 560 to 580 in GS +Essay. That too with very average score in Essay. Then, cannot we try for 540. Is it impossible?

1.8k views

@sat_009
10-20 people will fall in above category out of 800 where they get almost equal marks in GS and optionals.

1.8k views

@Biryanimafia_Really hard to wait for results for 75 days?
Daily we do some experiments with predictions.

1.8k views

@vvvikas0078212How you are using this free time.

1.8k views

@vvvikas0078212Nice yaar. All the best.

  1. How many marks did you get last time (Essay, GS, Optional and Interview).
  2. Which Job - IT?
1.8k views

@vvvikas0078212Your score is good in GS and Essay - getting 540 consistently and not bad in optionals. Just focus on Interview, you will make it this time.

This is what I was trying to explain since morning - your score is good example - Just assume, if OBC candidate gets the same - can't he get name in list easily with little improvement in interview?

1.8k views

@bevancom- Good know this and congrats.
Sorry to ask this, is it true & believable?

1.8k views

1.7k views

@sat_009I think cut off will be around 775 for UR and 740 for OBC.

1.8k views

@TheHobbitNO. Not at all just for one line as long as it is meaningful

1.8k views

1.8k views

All the best to all serious aspirants.

1.7k views

@bevancomI agree with you. It is possible to write answers in exam without much practice, if candidate is good in writing answers by nature. I too attempted mains without much practice, just written answers to 7 questions and only one easy.
In mains I didn't leave any questions.
Because, answer writting is my strength, since school days.
But I struggled lot to clear prelims.

I believe in content, not in answer writting practice.

Please don't bombard if someone don't agree.

Only around 15% people can’t speak Hindi who are from Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, few from Kerala & few from West Bengal & NE states etc.

One young man went for an ias interview.
"when did india get independence?" he was asked.
"the efforts began a few years earlier and final
result was in 1947" he replied.
"who was responsible for our independence?"
"there were so many. whom to mention? if i name one, it will be
a injustice to another." he replied. "is corruption the number one enemy in
our country?"
"some research is going on the subject and i can answer with
certainly only after seeing the report" he replied.
the interview board was very pleased with his original and
thoughtful answers and asked him not to reveal the questions to others,
since they were planning to ask the same questions. when he went out naturally
others were curious to know what was asked. he politely declined, but one
persistent sardar would not leave him. "at least tell me the answers" he pleaded, and our friend obliged.
then it was the turn of this sardar. when he went inside, since his resume
was slightly illegible, the board member asked him. "by the way, what is
your date of birth?"
he replied, "the effort began a few years earlier and final result was in
1947."

somewhat puzzled, they asked another clarification.
"what is your fathers name?"
he replied, "there were so many. whom to mention".
if i name one, it will be injustice to another". the interviewer was incensed.

"hey! are you mad or what?"
he replied. "some research is going on the subject.ican answer
with certainty only after seeing the report."
