Mains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread

@Vikait was my first attempt and first mains. I found history paper easier than last few years’. In gs I did nothing exceptional but optional is making me bite my nails. Have no idea about the marks in such paper even after attempting full 500 marks paper confidently, I have a strong intuition that mains result will shatter and shock all of us.

1.7k views

@abhishek_pand any senior who gave mains this year with history optional. What are your views on the extent this paper can be shocker even after having some relatively easier questions??

1.7k views

@STyr sample space bada ambiguous rhega aise predictions me. Bahut dhurandhar bethe hai upsc ki race me...900-870 me hi khub nikal jaenge

1.7k views

Am I the only one who found implementing intro body wf conclusion format really tough to implement in this year’s gs questions??

1.8k views

@Jayson_BourneGave my first mains with history optional this year. Found questions quite straight forward compared to previous years. Not sure how this will impact the score. Might lower down a bit.?

1.8k views

@Vikain ancient I found everything from U Singh, just wrote down exact language of textbook( Q 3 and Q4). In medieval, sanskrit ques (could not remember text but had rough idea from ignou that sanskrit was limited to translations of old text and nothing new was written) , zainul(exact text from satish chandra) european impact( bit of ncert and ignou- halo behind jahangir, choice of colour and tones, objects in paintings),capitalism( ignou stuff, had hard time compiling everything). Modern I found quite straight forward(I think p2p Was source of most of the questions) . In world attempted q 5 and 6 (was able to write relevant stuff but no idea how it will be examined ) was my first attempt, history sucks hell to of time and my GS prep suffered cuz of my optional. Not sure to continue with history or take anthro which is known to have a short syllabus (people say so) and is more awarding(atleast 270 marks )unlike history

1.8k views

@Vikaeven at the exam centre, some senior players told me that history is a dhokhebaz subject.?
That students from engineering background must go for anthro, PCM or their graduation stream. History is least rewarding optional. And all this was said a day before optional paper.
Will be focusing on RPSC Aen mains for few months. Dont want myself to get struck in this cycle of upsc without a backup!

1.8k views

@Shubzwas watching gs score video by piyush kumar. He was saying that we can mention more than one site and write about one and upsc is quite liberal when it comes to mapwork. Hope that’s also followed in practice at upsc

1.6k views

I have seen some of my relatives who are in service, clearing this examination with ncert level knowledge in GS and optionals(particularly in history) but those with PhD stuff struggling to score decent marks in mains....what exactly do we need to write there??

1.6k views

@Vikayeah, but wrote what I knew..covering most of the aspects in 150 words

1.6k views

@Phagocytei wrote like this. India a nation of multiple languages and within a language there are multiple dialects across regions with their distinct literature. Cultural variations in food dance drama within smaller pockets similar to those across India. Filled up 2 pages with such stuff

1.7k views

@Ravsi answered it in this way. Non performance k reasons- personal or financial obligations, conflict of interest. Leads to trust erosion and delayed redressal affects quality of work if done in hurry afterwards as there will be misuse of funds and arbitrary use of authority in haste. Such sort of bakar. Its tough to create answers on the spot!! Still insights junta claim it as the easiest paper of human history!

@dancingminion
employment- earlier they were restricted to homes, globalization gave opportunities but with rising male incomes women again got restricted to homes
health- reproductive, lifestyle-related

history optional...paper was bit easier compared to previous years..and thats where things are going to change...and marks will go down!

1.5k views

@Deltahistory optional me decent score hi 230-250 hota hai

1.5k views

The olny plus point I have obseeved with history that with history, those writing superficial answers(some of my seniors) and dealing map portion properly, they were scoring around 260-270..but thats nothing in front of 320-330 scores in many optionals these days(min. Req. For top 100 rank)

1.6k views

@AllMightwell according to a senior(currently in IAAS) one must be confident that 16 sites must be absolutely correct(along with 30 word theory)..this year..I think serious aspirant could have done 16-17 sites with accuracy

1.5k views

@AllMightI dont know. I myself gave my first attempt This year...just sharing experience of seniors..

When it comes to checking mains answer copies, there is a general pattern followed in state PSC/UPSC
There is a head examiner and representative of UPSC who thoroughly discusses the question paper with examiners. They are also briefed with the answers provided by those who have framed the question. Every question is analyzed along with every dimension related to that question, degree of easiness or toughness, marking criteria etc. Then the checking of copies finally starts. No examiner can award more than 60%( i.e 150) marks in GS. If he does, the copy is again rechecked by the head examiner, who confirms if the candidate really deserves that score.
So verdict is, Examiners are already familiar with multiple versions of an answer and give marks accordingly.
(My father is a professor who has checked state PSC copies, and few of his friends have had attachment with upsc as an examiner)

Now I am here to demotivate myself..in order to bear shock of mains result
plus prepare for other exams as well.(RPSC Aen in my case).not completely lost in dreams of fabulous mains result and lbsnaa life?

1.3k views

yes. Had history optional, now switching back to civil engg. for Aen mains after 1 year of leaving this subject

1.3k views

whatever he wrote in his answer sheets..doesnt matter to us..we all wish he gets rewarded for his hardwork. 1.5k views

@paranthapijjaI am personally against the idea of maps and flowcharts as I believe that for a 50-60-year-old examiner, the text is more comfortable than diagrams...but thats just me..do diagrams elevate scores?

@ranyo_asoka10 dec I think, interviews by 1 Feb

1.2k views

as the upsc chairman is the same person, we might see pattern similar to 2018. Just a guess?

1.6k views

For me, it was my first attempt and first mains. I only left 1 question in GS, that too 10 marker in GS2( federal supremacy one). But in rest of the question, most of them were completed in 2-2.25 pages( 250 words) and 1.25 page(150 words), for few question where I had ample of content, I wrote 2 page , 3 pages respectively, but such questions were not more than 7-8 in every paper, some 15 markers were written in 1.5 page. So I think if one aspires to complete 20/20 questions in GS, some questions had to be cut short otherwise its impossible!
( I am reading The Hindu regularly since 2017 when I was doing my graduation, means I started my preparation bit earlier which kept me such position that I had something write about in every question)

1.2k views

@corrigible_87copy checking process as much I know was finished yesterday. Insider info. Might be wrong

1.2k views

@ranyo_asokayr maine apni university k prof. se baat kari thi, some prof. known to him returned from Delhi yesterday after staying for 1 month there(for copy checking). He said that answercopies of optionals and GS are checked, no idea about essay. Preparing result takes time.

@MalcolmIf you have any wedding invitations, attend some of those weddings, socialize and have some great food(what I am doing these days?). Because after the mains result, one might have another year of isolation and confinement...

I also wrote stories in both essays-
Courage wale me - ISRO initial failures to Successful MOM

AI me- I started with an anecdote from movie Naya Daur in which new tech(motorcars) were seen with apprehension by bullock cart driving villagers but later they realized benefits of tech of the day..type stuff..

KAT sakta hai...lagta hai..
I am horrible with philosophical essays, my practice sessions confirmed that. Took 2 hours to complete first one, AI one found something in my domain, had plenty of bakar abour it

1.1k views

@Scorpion888in courage one I had few examples from history which I gave and diversified essay by blending climate change and social aspects with it.

In AI, the only report I knew was of ILO future of work, rest govt. schemes, NITI aayog NAIM, AI garage. It divided this essay into impact of AI in primary, secondary and tertiary sectors and scope of upskill and reskill. Did not include Socio-economic-political factors .

@surendra19i also gave isro eg. Then whats courage and why accept, then wrote about accept-improve for great men(mk gandhi)-common individuals (our daily lives)- nation (made by individuals-Japan eg)
then what after success-courage to accept(successfull business impact on env. Lives of people and dedication to improve the same). Then a conclusion that I dont remember

@ranyo_asokatime kaat raha hu...mains k result tak

1.2k views

@atuljibiased media wala was I think the toughest topic. Maintaining a balanced view in this topic is itself an art as we all know the current state of Indian media and reason behind its biasness which we cant openly say in upsc paper(imo)

1.2k views

@bevancomessay is something, we can easily recall about what we wrote in exam as the info is much less. This is not the case with GS..where one hardly one can recall even faintly each and every point they wrote..after 60days

1.2k views

@bevancomsahi baat hai...
But those sharing points here might be first attempters with confused brains having no idea what they wrote, and no one to discuss answers with. So they share their answers, so that a senior can give some insights about what can go wrong. Although one must not trust blind opinions on forums butstill 1% bhi kisi ki baat kaam ki nikal jae to khud ki galti pata chal jaegi...that why I am here

1.2k views

@zombielandtrue that, from personal experience I can confirm that starting with a story is an escape route when we are out of good ideas or facts(which happened with me while I was writing in exam)..rarely I have seen any good essay that starts with a story, only upsc junta has opted this methodology to such an extant

1.2k views

The" story prem" I think has become widespread after "meena wali story" by a topper who scored 171 marks in essay in 2017

1.2k views

@Chanakyaworst part, they did not even whatsapped copy of result to chairman, otherwise I
Could have asked MP of my constituency to forward it to me?

1.1k views

yr that Vinaay of insights...wo aadmi saare subject padhata hai kya, sare gs papers ka discuss karta hai, essay ka bhi...ya to talent hai ya complete fraud?..And bahut sare selected candidates to bhakts hai vinaay SIR ke..

1.2k views

A relative of mine gave mains in 2017, he wrote one essay in 6 pages, another in 5. He has an elbow problem so cannot right fast so restricts himself to few pages. But he spent initial 1 hour in brainstorming those 6 pages each essay. He got 146. Could not get selected due to horrible marks in GS and optional as he was not able to complete paper. But those 146 marks speak a lot about how essays are evaluated

1.2k views

@nikhilrai0827880As much I know, a candidate is known by a serial no. not the role no. written in the front page. So dont worry

1.2k views

1.2k views

Recently in Rajasthan Assistant Engg Prelims
Cutoff were as follows
ST- 121
OBC- 115
Gen- 101
SC- 49
All candidates of st and obc were declared qualified by the High Court stating that, reserved cat. cutoff cannot be higher than Gen. This happened for prelims result. Total no. candidates eligible to write mains were increased so that Gen cat. seats are not affected.

@MadamSir examiners stick to a specified answer framework. It is required from the students to be ideologically neutral?

1.2k views

@abhishek_pexaminers are not selected by the government of the day. The UPSC Chairman makes a panel to recommend names and then examiners are personally contacted by the Chairman office. There is a certain criteria for selecting examiners, like they must not have been a part of paper setting process, they are not part of any book(authored or co authored) whose reference is there in question paper etc. The panel consists of all UPSC members. Having seen some interview transcripts, I can surely say that UPSC members do not align to any specific ideology and are neutral in their approach.?
