I just get around like 90-92.
I think forum gives 10 marks less than Vision, if you want to know your vision marks just add 10 to your final score.

But even if we write average and generic stuff, 2-3 marks per question toh mil jayenge.

@K_9said inMains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread:

@Kira0705Intro body conclusion is a broad format. Sometimes people try to rigidly stick to their own set formats instead of answering what the question specifically asks.

For example - In one of ethics case study this year, there was a question on consequences of politicization of bureaucracy. Only the consequences were asked. Not the reasons, not the "way forward or solutions". Still many candidates try to be innovative, solution oriented by putting in a way forward. Address the question. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I think there is nothing wrong in discussing way forward or solutions. But they should be limited to 20-25% of the answer. The rest 80% must be dedicated to what was asked.

Last year GS4 looked so easy, this time I found it really difficult.

Upar se nobody is talking about it toh Aisa lag rha hai ki bass mera hi kharab gya hai.

I negated the statement. Wrote on how non performance is ethically wrong but it cannot be termed as corruption as there is no private gain involved.

Gave examples of Policy Paralysis, Red Tapism where there is non performance but we cannot say corruption is taking place.

Plus used example of Case Study 1 - where rescue work was halted due to heavy rains, There is an element of non performance but it is due to external factors, which cannot be termed as corruption.

Guys, need some advice

I have been preparing for the past two years. Appeared in both mains, last year and this year. But I am not really sure of clearing it this time as well. Thinking of taking up a job and continue the preparation alongside the job.

I want to know, whether it's feasible to prepare alongside a (9-5) job ? What are your thoughts on this ?

For me personally it seems difficult, but so is preparing for UPSC especially when the uncertainty keeps on increasing year after year.

@dancingminionTaking up a 9-5 job will be a good idea if the job is not too demanding(like in an IT company) and makes it possible for you to give atleast 4-5 hours to study daily....

+1 bhai, I am from IT background so most likely will be taking a job in IT.

3.6k views

@foxmuldersaid inMains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread:

@dancingminionGoing by last year's standards, average answers in almost all questions would have given you 80s in GS1 and GS4, 90s in GS2 and GS3

So around 3 in 10 marker and 5 in 15 marker, right ?

What is the marking scheme in good and excellent answers ?

3.6k views

@Shubzthanks for the input

I guess, I wrote pretty average answers in my last attempt

My marks hovered around 80 in all the 4 papers
GS1 - 72 (less due to harsh marking in GS1)
GS2 - 83
GS3 - 80
GS4 - 85
Left almost 2-2.5 question in every paper.

So I guess people who have completed the paper and wrote even slightly above average answers can expect to get more than 90 - 95

@Shubzyear to year variations are there,
2017 gs3 was checked with 70 60 50 40 percent contunuum,
70 percent for excellent, 60 for good, 50 for relevant, 40 for average
in paper gs1 and 2, seems 65 55 45 35 percent was awaded.
gs 4 was strict.

2018 me
gs paper 1 me 55 45 40 35 % (excellent, good, relevant and average)
gs paper 2 and 3 ,60 50 45 35 % (excellent, good, relevant and average)
gs paper 4 was 1 grade liberal than 2017,

in short marking depends upon -

  1. questions asked( specific or general - more number of specific questions reduces average score of that paper across the board)
  2. standards set for evaluator
  3. marking pattern
  4. which paper gets liberal scoring (consider if someone has done good in gs paper 3, liberal checking will be bonanza for him or her, consider if someone has messed up gs 2 and checking is strict there, it will be disaster for him ir her).

comclusion - not messing up tough papers (for marking)
and doing good where paper was easy and marking scheme is good will lead to great scores overall

What is the difference between an average answer and a relevant answer ? I am not able to understand How to categorize my answers in different categories.

for eg in GS3 - IFS wala question. I first defined what is IFS and wrote 4-5 points on How IFS can help in sustaining agricultural production like better returns and remuneration, climate change resistance, better productivity, diversification etc. And in end I concluded with the line that IFS will help in doubling farmers income by 2022.
(no examples and no diagrams and figures) [1.5 page total]

According to you is it a relevant answer or an average answer ?

How about you invest a little bit since you're the friggin indian government and improve administrative infrastructure and capacity. So many reports have noted that India lacks adequate number of IAS/IPS plus there is an incredible governance deficit.

+Plus, IFS seats were more last year.

Planning to use my contacts after mains result (as before result, even contacts will be reluctant to help because they would not want their referral to leave job in 5-6 months in case we clear everything).
Regarding explanation, I am honestly telling the upsc reason, as other bluffs will most probably be caught in interview etc
Anyone with better ideas can help here..

same here man!!
I think as soon as recruiters hear about UPSC, they automatically assume that the candidate is a flight risk. Also they assume that the candidate's performance won't be good, since they will be giving further attempts.
So, I am thinking of skipping this whole UPSC thing from my resume and mentioning that I took the break due to personal reasons.

@dancingminioni dont know if my answer helps you. I'll just share my experience. Before plunging into UPSC, i had 1.5 years experience in JP Morgan. And then followed by 3 failures n hence 3 years gap. Didn't want to risk losing backup career also n hence decided to get back to IT. Started applying for jobs and very few companies responded n that too they were startups/semi-MNCs which i didn't want to join as I wanted time to study again for CSE. Fortunately i got offers from 2 very good MNCs in 2.5 months. JP Morgan again n Oracle. Worked in Oracle for 1.5 years again before quitting after prelims this year as management didn't agree for 3 months leave.

What worked for me?

Referrals : very very few interviews got scheduled through consultants. College friends, my colleagues who were 10years experienced helped me get an interview opportunity and all i wanted was that. I had faith in my tech skills.

My answer to gap: i wanted to follow my passion and if not by 25 i couldn't have done it ever. And now I'm done with cse, i want to start my career in IT. I even told to few that I'm 26 so don't want to mess-up with my career anymore?

Few things that struck them in my resume (i think so):

  • Hail from #1 regional engineering college in Karnataka ( not iit/nit). So most managers were aware of the college name as i was searching in Bangalore only.
National level tech paper published. An exciting mobile app developed way back in 2011 when there was no Android in India. Tech challenge winner certificate. And some interesting projects.

My suggestion:

Please save your interviews referred by your friends to the end. Until then Attend every interview shortlisted even if it's a startup, you can always refuse joining it if uninterested. Because You'll get to know the questions trend in the market. After you prepare for variety of questions, attend interviews arranged through referrals.

Prepare with utmost seriousness. Remember they are not fools to hire someone who has gap. So you have to prove yourself that you are competent enough even to the day. i was stunned to see JP Moragn drilling me for 6 rounds + HR round for its own ex- employee before selecting me.
Be mentally ready that hunting jobs in IT takes 3-5 months.

Good luck!

Thank you for such a detailed post. I really appreciate it.
I am going through the exact same situation. Looking for jobs in IT.
can I PM you ?

and I believe only in GS3 he got around 70. So if you comapre, apart from GS3, his final marks had a good correlation with the vision test series marks.
I don't know why people generalize it?

@utkarsh_mishrasaid inMains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread:

I think 100 and above consistently in vision generally does reflect in good marks in mains too. There are a few exceptions who score lesser in tests and still do good in final exams, but yeah consistently good marks in test series does reflect to an extent in upsc.

True, I have hardly encountered anyone consistently scoring 100 in vision and performing badly in mains. Well yeah, there are exceptions, but those are rare.

@Biryanimafia_ said inMains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread:

@utkarsh_mishrayes, I do see your point. I just have a hard time accepting Vision scores and UPSC scores as linked in any way...Once bitten, twice shy.

I think the key is to find the median not the mean (of test scores) in Vision tests.
There is a huge variation in marks awarded by evaluators in tests series. Some correct the copies very liberally and others very harshly. In the end there is a huge 40-50 marks gap between your lowest and highest score. In these scenarios the mean is distorted by these highest and lowest marks.

so, finding a 10 mark window in which most of your marks lie is a good way of finding your optimum test series score score.

for eg in Kataria's case the window is around 97-105 marks, ignoring the effect of his highest and lowest marks.

@deceptrixI don't think filling more pages gives any sort of advantage at all. Obviously one needs to write minimum words but I don't think more pages gives any sort of advantage, particularly if content is irrelevant.

It does give a psychological advantage imo. It's hard to fetch good marks in 15 markers if you have written only one page, even if your content is highly relevant.
After all the examiner evaluating is a human being and is prone to biased and prejudices. So, he or she may award you marks for writing more.
IMO, A good rule of thumb can be to write as much as you can while staying relevant to the question.

@ManchesterUnitedCAB: 1. tries to correct injustice and persecution faced by minorities in neighbouring nations
2. Will help boost image as a regional leader
But,

  1. Judicial tenability, as Art14 applies to both citizens & aliens
  2. Concerns about secularism(religion as the basis)
  3. Inclusion, exclusion of nations(why not SL Tamils, Nepal, Bhutan)

Hyderabad: 1. Needs thorough investigation
2. If accused attacked & were trying to flee, then retaliation was necessary
But,

  1. If not true, it amounts to custodial death(not encounter)
  2. Will open a pandora's box with similar demands in different cases
  3. Against the established structure of state(sep of powers)

Personal opinion: Against both CAB & encounter

I learned a peculiar thing yesterday, that an undertrial cannot be handcuffed. Only a person convicted in a court can be handcuffed. In Hyderabad vet murder case, all the 4 accused were not in handcuffs and may that gave them an opportunity to run.

@Chanakyasaid inMains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread:

India has seen numerous issues which had divided the country sharply at that time. Land reforms, reservations, reorganisation of provinces,Shah Bano case just to name a few. However in the long run, we have to accept that these decisions were taken only after following the democratic process, and hence, we should look beyond our individual comfort, both physical and psychological, and accept these as the will of the people.
Now coming to the present, article 370,NRC,CAB and most importantly Hindutva have been a fundamental element of BJP-RSS agenda. These big steps have been taken just after elections, probably because these were the major issues on which BJP has fought elections consistently and getting an increased majority validates their claim that this is the will of the people. Now we can say that elections were hijacked by superficial issues, or that BJP benefitted from a weak opposition, but I guess the fact is that elections are the only way to determine the will of the people, atleast in the present circumstances.
More specifically, CAB is a law and hence can be reformed if that indeed is the will of people, after the next elections. Also it's not a blanket provision, rather it's an ad hoc measure which is limited to immigrants who entered India before 31st Dec 2014. Now the countries and communities that it's limited to is purely under the prerogative of government, and can be extended later on to other communities and countries as per the will of the people.
We are at a stage in history where several notions which were considered infallible a few decades ago are being challenged and contested. So it becomes imperative that as citizens we behave in a responsible democratic manner, just imagine what would have been the history of India if any of the groups/individuals had reacted to the issues of Shah Bano, reservation, land reforms etc the way some people are trying to portray this CAB.

Bhai I get it, but CAB+NRC have created a lot of panic and fear among the Muslims. They are starting to feel that the government and it's institutions are anti Muslims. They are becoming more skeptical about there future in India.
Also, in these past 2-3 years successive legislations have been passed which directly affect the muslims like Triple Talaq, Art 370, Ayodhya and now CAB. We can debate about their merits and demerits but one thing is for sure that these changes have led to anger and frustration among the Muslims that a Hindu Majority govt in which they have hardly any representation are making these laws which are profoundly impacting their both personal and professional lives.
The essential parity between Minority and Majority is the bedrock of secularism and constitutional morality. But in these recent times, sadly this parity is indeed broken and due to this communal harmony of the country is severely threatened.

@bevancomsaid inMains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread:

Bhai log life mein bahut kuch sahi nahi hota.
They were given numbers by people of india to do this and they r doing it.
I was in full favour of abrogation of article 370 and even for nrc for assam but cab isnt understandable and neither is nationwide nrc.
As for misguiding youth we r already misguided.I had the chance to study in the elite institutions of the country and had the chance to interact with even more. What is taught in the name of so called humanities optional subject is demeaning of our armed forces and only teaches the good deeds of few people who were there when ncert curriculum, ignou curriculum was designed.
I even had the chance to read whole of ignou course for socio and sometimes feel pity and sad of the way our freedom fighters other than gandhi r portrayed and the extreme negative light in which hindu religion is portrayed.
I had the chance to listen to officers sitting in MEA feel sad of thier extreme orientations.
I had the chance to read the subject "social transformation in india" in one of elite institutions of social science and felt sad of the way kashmir situation is shown. They always talk of pampora case and without proof profs point fingers at army but never told about what had happened before army went there(read girija tikoo gruesome death and rape). They point what is happening today but I know the horrific reality when I ask people like parents and grandparents who had to leave their home, business etc which they had built over years in middle of night.
So dear friends things r never fair in life.
I also feel sad of they way tina dabi is able to get thru pre while someone close to me could not as she was from general category.
I also feel being cheated when obc friends of mine with much better salaries than mine were able to get into better iits and iims than mine with 78 percentile while i could not at more than 99.
I feel cheated when previous goverments brought such a scheme where my sister could only get into lady hardinge medical college with better marks while someone from other caste with lesser marks managed aiims.
I feel cheated when a leader says minorities have first right over nations resources as someone in power needed votes from specific community.
I feel cheated when I paid 8 lakh tax last year while someone with a 35k stipend protests for a increase in fees from 10 rupees to 600.And this 8 lakh was because my parents worn torn clothes 20 years back so that they can save money on their childs educations since the day she is born.
So friends somethings are not fair and mistakes do happen in life whether being born in a specific group,or mistakes from people.
Mistakes might have happened in passage of these bills but government was given power by people of India to enact laws and it is within their right to do so just as it was within right of vp singh govt to bring quota as it was within democratic framework or virtual collapse of abdulla govt in 1990 as it was elected with democratic framework
Jabh pehle mistakes huyi to everybody was quite and we consider it as normal and instead consider what is happening today as mistake.Who knows what happened yesterday was a mistake and what is happening today is correct.

P.S-To comment a move as good or bad we must have knowledge from not only what hindu has been writing but from a wide wide wide range of sources extending over years books and authors. And I believe most of us(99.999999%) arent qualified to do so(including me) don't have it.
So yes some moves will be good for some and bad for otbers.Just as in past even bad moves got passed and many including family suffered so as this time shall also pass.

Unlike comments on the top this was not neutral and was not written as a upsc answer. These are not there to hurt anybody feelings but was a compilation of my experiences and extensive reading of social topics, newspapers and lextures since 2011

@pysh12950True. This small incident offered me few lessons:

  1. One doesn't need to be rich or educated to be generous and kind-hearted. Its just the intention that matters.
  2. There are people especially geriatric population that need the attention of government and society. Wish we all could do something for them.
  3. Self-satisfaction is a wealth which one should never afford to lose.

Bro you have got to read Victor Frankl's - "Man's Search for Meaning". It talks in detail about the first point you mentioned.

A quote from the book - "The last of the human freedoms: to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way".

The old lady chose to be kind despite her difficult circumstances. It's her attitude that makes her different from the rest. Many would chose their difficult circumstances as an excuse to do mean things.
Finally, it is that our attitude that ultimately decides where we we will be in future, or what kind of person we will become not the circumstances we are in, or the society we are a part of.

@ManchesterUnitedfunny you would say that because Karnataka students have actually been voicing their opinions vociferously since past weeks. Top university IISC has relentlessly been protesting against CAA-NRC, and so has IIM Bangalore in form of silent vigil. Christ University management had to issue notice to students to not discuss/debate it on campus. Meanwhile, Manipal also had students organising protests. Even teachers at IIM Bangalore along with students wrote to govt condemning violence against students. IISC yesterday even protested to show solidarity with JNU students. NSLIU Bangalore and IIM yesterday gathered at Town Hall for the same purpose.
Also, Apart from Karnataka, various other premier institutions of India and the plenty others in the entire world have been voicing their concerns.

But, I guess selective amnesia does run deep.
Also few people here, while masquerading as neutral arbiters or trying to pose as the devil’s advocate are actually harbouring very disturbing double standards, and few even bigoted.
Before 2014, everyone used to say shit about congress which they deserve, and everyone used to openly criticise Manmohan Singh, and everyone used to support Kejriwal and Hazare against fight for corruption.

Why are same things today condemned at?
Right and left both have very toxic hypocrisy and I hope we not as aspiring civil servants but just as humans, don’t lose our heart in the process. It’s almost troubling to see what have people come to be. While the Left suffer from selective amnesia when it comes to plight of Kashmiri Hindus, Islamic fundamentalism and discrimination against Hindus in theocratic neighbour states. The Right is blind against 2003 riots, mob lynchings, absolute control over neutral institutions, hijacking of journalism, poison being spewed 24/7 on IT Cell and so on.

Aristotle said rightly that educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all. And, one might become an IAS one day, but that doesn’t mean one’s good person. And it’s almost appalling that people would go to lengths to defend ministers when they see how common man suffers at their hands. Nanavati Committee exonerating you know who but pointing fingers at those 3 honest IPS officers which tried to who tried not be a yes man and protect innocents. All former bureaucrats Shiv Shankar Menon, MK Narayan, SY Quirashi, and tonnes of others, entire academia, experts, worldwide intellegensia - everyone is left? It’s not easy to speak out when you have something to lose, and it’s very easy to be pro establishment because it’s win win. While one not be anti-something just for the sake of it - not doing anything, is equal to encouraging it. Actors, YouTubers, few good journalists receiving death threats for showing a dissenting voice? This is just going backwards.

Let us for once try to put ourselves in original position, behind veil of ignorance. Condemn each and every wrong, and call out hypocrisy where ever you see it. Islamic fundamentalism is fucked up. But so is every other form of religious fundamentalism.

sahi me is bar thoda state pcs jaisa feel krarha
the pain will be over for those who finally get selected baki logo ke liye ek ek din costly prove hoga
mai to job me hu to lgtahai job ke bina tyari krni chaihiye fully focussed hoke

Bhai, I will strongly recommend against it. If you manage with your job then please don't quit.
UPSC ka koi bharosa nahi hain. Kuch bhi karne lage hain aaj kal. Random papers, unpredictable interviews and out of syllabus questions have become the norm of UPSC in these past few years. Civil Services has become much more luck based than merit based in recent years, jisme topper ko bhi pata nahi uska selection hoga ki nahi. There were even proposals to include FC marks in allocation of services. PMO ne bhi interfere karna start kar dia hain. Seats aur kam ho rahi hain due to railways.

Matlab bhai kya kya kare hum log ?

@Hermione_Granger it determines the first posting as you have to learn the language . If you get Chinese , you will go to Beijing for sure . And at most the 2nd posting . After that rotation comes into play . If you got class A countries in the first 2, now is your turn to serve in C countries and vice versa .
If you get into IFS , obviously you are not there for a few years and will probably serve 30+ years and in your whole career CFL will not have any impact , but your skills , personality , expertise will be the only thing which will decide how successful you are , and if you got more good countries on average than your peers . And one more thing as other people are claiming about 1st Gen , 2nd Gen IFS . MEA is the most professional of all organizations , and this kind of nepotism is more prevalent in home based services , it has no place in the IFS .

There was an AMA(Ask Me Anything) conducted by an IFS officer a while back on Reddit. Really gives an idea about the service and it's pros and cons. Will really help people who are considering IFS to be their first choice.

Link -I am an officer of the Indian Foreign Service. Ask Me Anything (almost).

I am a "middle management" civil servant (Indian Foreign Service). I've been a diplomat for over a decade, and have served in many countries and traveled to even more for work. I don't want to discuss questions that would hint at my identity, but I'll be happy to answer questions about the workings of my beloved Ministry and the Indian Foreign Policy to the best of my ability. I will not be disclosing any classified information, obviously. I'm also happy to take questions about the Civil Service Examination process.

Disclaimer - He has deleted his Reddit account after the AMA. So the responses with username "[deleted]" are his response to the questions posted by users.

@kochikaameOh yes. By and large I agree.
Mostly I have time only for subs dedicated to movies, TV shows. And sometimes, philosophy and books. Reddit otherwise, is great for expanding on your interests.

Yeah, the best part of Reddit is the effective organisation of data in subreddits. Each topic has its own subreddit which makes it very easy to find and create content. Facebook has much more data than Reddit but due to their poor organisation is really hard to find relevant content

@TeddyWestsideI'm glad that Forum Quest has saner minds. TG pe log emotions ke saath khelte hain. Kuch logo ne 3-4 baar result declare kar diya udhar. Fake news at crucial moments like these is absolutely unacceptable.

Don't forget the fake pdf wala naatak. That also started from Telegram.
