@ShubzRelevance of answers to what is asked is more important than quality of write up, sometime people write good stuff but most of that is not relevant or has not been asked.
Sometime we feel toppers answers are general or not to that level becoz we have been encultured to such external unnecesary standards and expectations,
quality of write up will help only in case of relevance.
so in my opinion, relevance and addressing all parts of question will fetch highest marks.

@Deltathe problem is that we can't compare as 2017 and 18 marking pattern were poles apart, even after leaving 2 questions and 2 substandard answers i got 113 in gs paper 3(2017) but even after writing decent answers and leaving only 1 question that too was able to define and write 3-4 points for a 10 marker,
was able to get 103 marks.
So comparision becomes difficult.

@DeltaIn my opinion there are 3 scenarios.

1. Solving questions which you know better and leaving others.
   Implication - base will be narrow and hence even after good score in questions you attempted, overall score will be insufficient.
2. Completing paper at any cost even lowering the quality of presentation or write up in questions we know better.
   Implication - base will be wide but score won't increase.
3. Solving questions which we know better first and in good presentation style and quality and then completing rest paper without beating around bush directly writing points relevant or what we know even some bakar will help.
   Implication - base will be wide plus good attempt will fetch high plus even average or below average marks in 5-6 questions will increase the score.

In gs paper 2 (i wrote only 3 lines for us israel question as time was running out, rest completed).
In gs paper 3 (yes except cyberdome, in cyverdome i wrote need for cyber security in 21st century 2 lines plus 5 generic functions of cyberdome without mentioning anything specific i wrote cyberstalking, stakeholder participation, implementation of IT act, will result in national cyber security policy implementation and help cert in which was very far fetched and i am counting it as zero attempt).
In gs paper 4 - was able to complete but the quality of content and handwriting in last quote of kalam is doubtful.

in vision ias or gs score they will award marks out of 5 if one angle is missing altogeter, but i highly doubt that same may happen in upsc, as content for grecobactrian elements is greater than central asian it may be the case that we may get 3.5 or 4 in this question.

example wale part me i think pahle se exanplea banake rakhne padte hai ki globalisation aya to 3 examples, idea of india pe aya to ye 3 example, transportation pe aya to 3 examples, i also make concise notes but at the bottom of every page i write examples from newspaper yojana etc
its true that i did not had examples of indepth case studies for 30 40 percent questions, but even in those questions i was able to mention famous examples like biopiracy of turmeric in traditional knowledge, ralegan siddhi for watershed, etc.
its not necesarily a result of slogging test series but sometime a personal touch of hobby

your analysis is very cruel reminder of whats missing in strategy of masses preparing upsc cse mains, writing irrelevant answers has become a trend rather than whats asked people write what they know.

@K_9right, i think whether one does answer writing or not, brainstorming important topics before hand is must, you should have a rough draft for questions like inclusive growth, gandhi, probity in governance, disasrer management, especially case studies.
and in optionals especially for one like anthropology answer writing is important to retain memorised things

I analysed this with help of my attempt in paper and final marks obtained.

the question ask impact of buddhism, jainism, islam, sikhism and neobuddhism (religions other than hindu) on status of scheduled castes or dalit (in ancient times buddhism and jainism gave relief to untouchables from rigid and orthodox thought of that time, in medieval period sufi islam gave rescued many sc with notion of equality, same goes with sikh faith , in modern times ambedkar and their follower adopted biddhism especially mahars and chamars which led to delegitimisation of traditional hierarchy.

nonconverts are still facing problems, even all these religion provided notional equality and caste system exist though witb less rigidity aming other religions too etc are points you have to write critical approach at the end is must.

map especially in regionalism question, neolithic site question, tiebto burman will help scoring

@Anthromanbro these examples are peripheral the question is not regionalism its ethnicity and regionalism, see in anthro you wont be penalised for these examples but non relevant examples wont add up to score in map if you have drawn northeastern examples etc you will still get good marks.

i wrote indian patent act which prohibit patenting things already present in nature or tk, cbd nagoya bd act 2002, local biodiversity register and tkdl.
i had tk in my 7th semester under heading traditional medicine and pharmacognosy hence knew very detailed answer but resisted myself to write technical things and wrote govt steps only.

@Raja123i have written introduction of traditional knowledge and threats to tk in terms of biopiracy with known examples such as turmeric, then started with measures 1. patent act 2. cbd in details with indias position ratification objectives nagoya protocol access and benefit sharing protocol 3. bd act nba sba local committtess with flowchart importance for preservation of tk and mentioned some formulations under register
4. tkdl tkrc csir initiative success story what it is how it protects traditional knowledge.

though i knew things at length and in more technicalities but space is full, this avoidance came with wisdom in previous attempt i am sure of getting good marks here in this question, but cyberdome and visweshrya are two my concerns rest paper was good.

2. 2 3 papers should be exceedingly well.
3. papers are left blank for more than 1 or 2 questions.
4. optional ethics case studies essay philosophical determine rank in the end.

@Charlie_Charlieyes bhai paper completion is key, last year ke mukable mera performance yaha acha raha, paper 1 complete, paper 2 (did not get time for 1 10 marker) paper 3 (barring vishwerya and cyberdome rest was okay, i have written very general for this two but rest was structured), paper 4 - complete.
optional wrote complete (quality of last 15 marker in both paper not to level of others, so effectively 470 me se hai ladai).but last year bhi aise hi hua tha but did not affect anthro score that much

1. I have never done any showbazi and main khud se ghar ghar jakar marks batata nahi fir raha, mujhe kisi ne pucha to jawab diya, tkdl ka question ho,marks ho, vulnerability ka question ho na maine debate start ki na kuch.
2. mera character assasination karne jaisi konsi chiz maine kar di hai.
3. mai koi sarv gyata nahi hu post mains ke sare comment padh lo eksath mera koi galat intention nahi samjh jayga.
4. mera name nahi jante tab itna kuch bola gaya kuch log to mujhe fraud bata rahe hai its really really painful, mai apni koi identity kabhi reveal nahi karna chahta, mere anibhav ache nahi rahe hai is mamle me, forum koi 5 dosto ka group to hai nahi ki misuse na ho, jab bina kuch jane one sided bakar subha se hui.

Social media is very useful platform if we handle it with a pinch of emotional intelligence.

yes the interview call is dependent upon multiple factors marking pattern, competition, essay and optional performance, category and last but equally important luck (fortune favours the brave).
When the variables are too many we can't be sure about whats gonna happen, hence its better to be prepared as if you have to appear for interview next day,
in the past i have seen people with no hope to crack through mains becoz of inherent pessimism to get into interview roll call and missing final list by some marks just becoz of lack of mental preparation for interview,
many students with 820 to 840 have not been able to clear the final cutoff becoz of less marks in interview,
i know its highly subjective stage of exam and even most prepared have got less marks in interview many times but its also true that those who are mentally prepared for interview, those who give mocks fumble less and get atleast average marks in interview.
One must always be optimist about oneself, but the decision one takes must be rational and forward looking.

@ranyo_asokaexam ke limited time me whatever we write is our best, if for same paper we get even 20 30 more minutes most of us will write good answer even for those questions where we feel we have not performed well,
to write multidimensional answers what we need is brainstorming at hand and that needs time, hence quality of answer reduces.
Thats why we should not overanalyse and worry now as we have hours for every question to think now plus internet ( but in exam hall what we have is 7 or 10 mints).

@paranthapijjaye to achi bat hai, agar neat draw kiya ho to he will be impressed. Most people put maps even where there is no direct need but for a question like border issues map is very relevant.

how will ews affect cutoff, I am not from ews, both parents in govt job, what are chances that it may hamper cutoff for unresered general category students.
this is not debate about pros and cons of quota, i am neither for nor against ews quota, this is an objective debate to ascertain how many are availing benefit how it may impact chances of non ews general candidates.
My sister failed to take admission into b.ed distance despite 2 more marks than last year general marks cut off, becoz ews took many seats in general.
I just want to know peoples opinion on how ews will impact upsc cutoff

@GloriousMess26the real problem with my sisters process was so many ews taking general seats, in her list she said out of 27 seats for general 19 were occupied by ews people 2 by obc 1 by sc, and cutoff increased by 4 marks for unresevred general.
I know things can't be compared between b.ed and upsc but still this will have some impact, and with experience we all know anything can happen in upsc, ache marks bhi aye to rank me asar pad sakta hai bwtween ews and non ews

nearly 6 to 7 of my friends writing mains have applied with ews (though some of them have costly gadgets)
but some were imandar too who have not applied and some were not able to produce document till august date hence considered general category for mains.
overall what impact it will have is not clear to me, and i was not even worried par ab sister ne dara hi diya, rest sabki apni mehnat aur kismat

what constitute good answer varies from candidate to candidate and evaluator to evaluator,
but some points which i consider more or less settled are this -

1. exceptional and excellent answers -
   a.Addresses the demand. (definitions are written well, body is in relation to whats asked)
   b.relevant answer and structured accordingly.
   c. visual presentation(graphs, diagrams, flow charts), plethora of elaborative examples (data strong answers use of eco survey, iyb, govt schemes, ngos, international organisations etc)
   d.follows format needed in question.
   e. coherence.

2. Good answer has two or three of the above elements.

3. average answer - is correct write up but lacks compregensive coverage of demands of answer, is not data strong and lacks depth but some dimensions are superficial,and some are somewhat covered to looklike you have answered.

4. bakwas answer is when you dont complete the demands or dimensions of question due to lack of understanding of topic, lack of comprehension of whats asked, or due to time constraint (most common reason).

when it comes to marking pattern for all these, it varies from year to year, for e.g gs paper 3 15 marker, excellent answers in 2017 fetched even 10 or 11 but in 2018 hardly 8 or 9 may have been awarded..
so it depends upon standard they set and directives for evaluators.

*no one student can write 20 answers of a single category, all 20 questions are mix up of some excellent varying from 2 to 6, giod answer varying from 5 to 8, rest average to bakwas.

filling page with unnecesary bakar reduces marks,only relevant write up gets rewarded, if someone fills all pages unnecesarily wont get marks, filling up by elaborating in more details what u knoe helps not anything bakar

but i am sure about what is definitly average answer -
paperwise -
gs paper 1 ( 3 10 markers, 2 15 markers, rest paper in my opinion was above average).
gs paper 2 ( 1 10 marker was average harmonious wala plus antiisrael wala left for crunch of time, 2 15 marker were average - multilevel planning and 19th wala, rest paper was relevant and satisfactory for limited time frame).
gs paper 3 (visves did not know any specific so half answer very average, cyberdome average did not write specific, so 2 10 markers are average, forgot to write criticism of nia amendmebts in 15 marker rest paper was good).
gs paper 4 was average se acha, in one case study politicisatio of burwaucracy did not focussed much on materialism etc paper completed plus last 2 quotes very bakar answer due to paucity of time 4 5 mints me dono attempt kiya)

@Rand_Al_Thorthe question was essayish and is open to interpretation in my opinion if you have structured these points well then u will rewarded with good marks in this question.

@tssi dont agree but at the same time if you have included punjab, haryana and raj along with guj and maha in answer u may get marks

@tssi was not awarding marks, was giving opinion that if someone writes only gujrat and maha he will not get marks for this point but if other areas have been mentioned along with that marks will be aearded as the answer becomes correct and in what world maha and gujarat comes under northwest, even if climatically similar does not mean the question is asking western region too,
you should do constructive criticism and validate your opinion but you cant say that aap ye nahi karne wo nahi karne wale,
respect other peoples opinion too and i was not judgemental so u also dont become.
