Mains 2020 : Essay and GS Discussion, Issues, Difficulty Level, Way ahead

Hello All, Essay paper is done. Question was a bit weird, at least part A where quotes were also not famous types. How did people approach the essay paper, which topics did you write on ? Did you use whitener anywhere? Did you do rough work ?

Does writing 90-110 words in 2-3 , 150 marker count as complete attempt or incomplete?

If the ans looks complete thn word limit doesn't matters bt if more space is left empty thn it might create a psychological impact on examiner ki ans pura nai likha

@kartikeybhatt171778 I used Gandhiji’s personal story of tasting cigar on insistence of his friend and then feeling guilt and never tasted it

@kartikeybhatt171778 I wrote a story of a 15 Yo Boy who pestered everyone, threw stones at dogs. One day he was circled by some elder boys and these dogs saved him. So his feelings changed and he eventually build a animal shelter for them.. Stopped hurting them and all.

Does this make sense?

My assessment w.r.t to last year

Essay - Slightly tougher

GS - 1 Almost same, maybe slightly tougher because of nearly 50 marks of AnC.

GS - 2 Significantly tougher

GS 3 A bit easier, though lengthy

GS 4 - WTF was that.

Please share your views, especially those who gave mains last year as well.

Essay was more or less okay I felt. That patriarchy essay in section-2 will save anybody who didn’t even prepare and section-1 is as usual vague.

GS-1 too I felt alright except that Persian literature question

GS-2 was a nightmare. I was literally grasping at straws to come up with relevant points. Wasted a lot of time thinking and had to complete last 6 questions (all 10 markers though) in 20 minutes. Unmitigated Disaster.

Talking of Disaster management, GS-3 was easy I guess. Marking will be tighter because of this I believe.

GS-4 was a bit tough. Case studies were lengthy and section-1 was very vague.

Tragicomic incident in GS 1 paper: My invigilator kept saying at the end, “please stop writing, I have to collect the paper”. I just looked at her with a dead expression, with my right hand still writing away autonomously and said “Please collect the paper ma’am, then I will stop writing”. She was just taken aback for a moment and started laughing and let me finish the last answer 😅

@Joeyisthebest bhai. Don’t worry about start. If you connect with theme, it will work. You have differentiate bw  human being  as a practical day to day behaviour and

being human as a theory and idealism. Then connecting all dimensions you have. Finally good conclusion will negate all previous bad impressions . Concentrate on optional.

Did anyone realised that 1st question of every subpart like 1st (10 markers), 11th (for 15 markers), 7th (for case study) have been intentionally designed to look tough/vague (using designer words), to give chills to students in beginning. I think UPSC sorts questions based on psycho-analytical techniques.
