Mains 2021 - Strategy, Doubts, Resources etc

@HeNeArKr ,@sjerngal ,@Purplesunbird

Here's the thread.

You (or anyone else) can create individual threads paper wise (GS1, 2, 3, 4 and essay). I'll pin them in the description.

I am hoping to clear this year's prelims too (third attempt, if cracked, it will be my second mains). I got 111 in essay last time. I used whitener in that paper a lot but after coming out of exam hall I read on notice board that whitener isn't allowed. Could that have had any impact on my essay score (negative marking)? How to go to 130 and above in essay from 111?

I don't know whether using whitener should affect the marks. Might be true, might not be.

Last year I felt the marking was a little stricter than 2019. Maybe that affected your scores too?

As to how to get 130 marks and above, there are a lot of tips, right from the basics to the advanced. Did you get your tests evaluated anywhere last year? If so, were you able to identify any weaknesses/areas of concern? Do mention them here. The more specific your query, the more people will be able to help.

If you are unable to diagnose specific problems with your essays, then do whatever seems useful among the following ->

1) Understand the basics of essay writing, through sources like Anudeep Durishetty's book/any essay strategy video (likethis oneby Ayush sir)/any topper's strategy

2) Learn from topper copies and compare your essays to theirs

3) Get your essay evaluated (usually by joining some test series)

Doing this should give you a clear idea where you lack. Once you know that, post them here. Someone or the other can guide you with tips + tricks + strategies to improve.

Hi all,

Could anyone assist me in getting a pdf of blank answer sheets that most accurately mimics the one we get at the actual mains exam?

Model-Answer-Sheet2121602219585.pdf

This was uploaded last year by@discoFighter (Can you confirm whether this is accurate compared to UPSC booklets?)

GeneralStudiesPaper-I-121021.pdf

This is a specimen QCA booklet uploaded on UPSC website. You can go through it for an idea about pages per question, page length, width of margin etc.

 When can we expect Vision IAS Mains 365?Just wanna to make a better plan factoring everything for Mains.

I don't remember the dates. On my laptop, I've saved the earliest file from last year on 12th Nov. So probably it was released at max 1 week before that. Based on that timeline, you can expect the first issue to arrive in early November with subsequent issues stretching up to mid December.

"Philosophical basis of governance and probity" ->What is meant by this topic in GS-4 syllabus, anyone?

So think about how different thinkers (Kautilya, Plato, Machiavelli, Locke etc) had different conceptions of what governance should be.

The topic is related to this. It's about understanding what should be the features of governance, what sort of governance should be considered good governance etc from a philosophical point of view.

Check Forum's Red Book on ethics. It has a couple of pages detailing this portion.

@Celeborn thanks you
also can you tell me how to preapre case studies: from scratch. i have no idea about those 120 marks. whats the structure, how to write them, format and from where to practise. TIA

My case studies aren't strong so I'm not the best person to guide you. I relied on Anudeep Durishetty's articles + book for the basic structure and formatting. However I feel I need to improve on that.

If you're just starting out, please do check some standard Ethics notes from any well known teacher/institute. Look into topper's copies. And once you understand the basics, practice more and more (either from test series or PYQs).

Can anyone please provide me with Dipin Sir's notes on Agriculture !!!!

https://blog.forumias.com/download-handwritten-forumias-current-affairs-handouts-mains-2020/

You'll find them here in the economy section. Even though this is last year's notes, most of it is relevant now also.

Also agriculture classes for 2021 haven't been conducted yet.

Can someone explain what does it mean when they say that since UAE is a transshipment hub, CEPA will allow india to access Middle east and North African markets. How does this happen. .

A trans-shipment hub is basically a middle point where goods may come bundled together and then are diverted to their respective destinations. Think of it as a Metro station. Hundreds (maybe thousands) may come together via the same train and exit at the station. From then on they can take an auto to their homes. This is obviously much cheaper than taking an auto directly from the beginning.

Now UAE being a trans-shipment hub means that it has the facilities to cater to larger shipments. So to save costs, India can bundle together a lot of shipments together, send it to UAE (since import tariffs would be greatly reduced under CEPA), and from there it can be broken up and sent to Africa, other Middle Eastern countries etc. This is the first way in which trade will be boosted.

The second way is by circumventing the rules of origin; which the commenter above has explained.

The third way is by setting up warehouses and re-distribution centres in UAE.
Now suppose some company in Africa wants to import pharmaceuticals. Instead of sending a representative to India, they can send them to the UAE warehouses to inspect the goods instead. This will obviously improve contact between Indian and African traders as well as reduce prices. Thus here also trade would be boosted.
