The topic 6 was selected by few candidates as compared to topic 5. It might be termed as unconventional.
At first look when one is not aware of full quote it was difficult to comprehend and open to interpretation. I related the topic to assam flood(brahmaputra being river) and how it is annual affair, the government and citizen apathy towards the issue(society stepping into river literally and metaphorically). Expanded to various dimensions(covid, sports, economy, riot control Singapore example etc) and in end gave solution.
But if one is aware of full quote of heraclitus( very few candidates knew) then essay would have completely different meaning. As of now we can only pray to upsc to be lenient on topic 6🙏 .
In end, my friend we both have stepped into same river(topic 6). Let us see we drown or swim like Michael Phelps. What did you right?

Explained scientific and romanticism term in detail.
Gave example of victory of science over romance( Galileo and church, capitalist vs communism, Ukraine abandoning nuclear weapon- Russia invasion, homi Bhabha vs nehru on nuclear weapon,some more example )
Reverse the topic. Gave example of victory of romance over science.( bhagat singh and revolutionaries, gandhiji, Socrates, some more example)

I think most of history optional candidate might have chosen this topic. But one needs to exercise caution before approaching such topic from only historical view point.
in 2021 i wrote my first essay on " The process of self-discovery has now been technologically outsourced." in sec A. The essay was in line with the explanations that floated in market by coaching institutes.
My second essay was about " Hand that rocks the cradle rules the world." where I wrote 10 pages in which I dedicated 1.5 page just to explain my interpretation of the essay. And I didn't even considered the dimension of "role of a mother" in my entire essay( at that time I was wondering that, its not just the role of a mother to rock the cradle, and I might look like a person who is patriarchal ....weird but such thoughts do come when essay papers have all the topics that are just way too unconventional.)
I discussed my second essay with my senior after mains. He said that if there is a quote which is said for a specific purpose and you try to drift away from it, no matter what you write and how brilliantly you try to explain your interpretation, you will be heavily penalised.
My essay score in 2021 was 58
116 in 2019, 120 in 2020
Given that , 2021 was the first time I joined a test series for essay writing, wrote more than 20 essays beforehand, worked on my content, had a group of friends to discuss and improvise my structure...in short I really work hard on my essay in 2021..but still it was 58
So all I can say is that, until and unless you are extremely lucky, and examiner is a person with an open mind, expect poor marks for an essay that's drifts apart from actual interpretation of the quote known to the examiner.
Above that, I much I know, before checking our booklets, examiners are briefed about every topic, marking scheme etc. etc...so they already have a structure in mind and evaluate our essays based on that. SOme might take the pain to understand your view point, but that's rare...so all the best.
And about every section being checked by a different examiner, I never paid attention to the last page in my previous attempt but a friend of mine said that after every question number, there is a column for marks and signature of the examiner, which proves that different examiners check our copies. Though this time I checked the same but there was no separate column for signature...but I assume it is being checked by different people.
Been in such situation in history optional paper2. In 2020 got 128 marks which was decent score.
But in 2021 attempt got some 52/58 marks.(paper went well with good histiography)Still can't figure out what happened wrong. As an aspirant I can only treat as an aberration and continue hard work.

I differ from your point of view. Indian revenue services, Indian corporate services can be ideal for agnipath like scheme. This has potential to attract candidates as corporates would always prefer background in tax related issue.Certainly not ias, ips and ifs where experience matter.
For armed forces agnipath there are still many candidates who have applied. We have 1.4 billion population and many unemployed graduates like me would happily take class 1 job even if it is for four years and then switch to other private firms where experienced is valued. But yes doctors, iitians and iims may not prefer it.

This idea is just new and we don't know it's impact on people opting for it and hence there is apprehension among candidates( including me).
Just giving you example of short service commission officer of armed forces(earlier it was for 5 years and now I think for 10-14 years with no benefits). These officer are valued and recruited by industries like Mahendra andTata .(even if they are infantry men who probably knows about guns and not about finance. It is because of their experiences in tough situation)
Recently Anand mahendra in an interview said that agniveers has good potential in industries. There were violent protest against agnipath scheme in India. But IAF received 2 lakh application in 6 days. Candidates inspite of temporary nature have applied for the post.
Regarding agnipath 2.0 in civil services it is too early to announce the verdict on success and failure.

In 2015-2016 vision made it's name for testseries.

But in the end upsc has last laugh. Prelim 2022, 2021,2020 is an assertion of dominance of upsc on coaching industries.( For mains test series is somewhat useful).

This is my first post. Since the mains exam, one thing has been going in my head regarding the essay paper.
In section B, I attempted the 8th question - "Just because you have a choice, it does not mean that any of them has to be right".
Contrary to the Hindi translation of 'right' i.e. 'sahi' , I interpreted 'right' in the fundamental rights, etc. context. I defined choices and rights.Rights - as claims of individuals against state. Choices - as decision making, speech, practicing religion, etc.
I just want to know if anyone else has done the same. I began the essay with the Anuraddha Bhasin case, where the Supreme Court has allowed the 'choice' of using internet as a right for freedom of expression & profession, but fell short of recognising it as a fundamental right itself. Thereafter, I explored 3 broad headers:
- "not all choices can be rights"
- "some choices have to be rights"
- "There's need of a balance between choices, rights & responsibilities."
Would UPSC allow such interpretation of the question? Any inputs are appreciated.

Anyone found correlation between FLT mains mocks and actual exam scores?
For me, it's +/-10 variation between mock FL tests and actual exams based on my experience in 2021 mains
No corelation. Some times mocks are generous in awarding marks in the end for boosting candidate's confidence. Experiences of previous toppers like 2018 reflect different picture of mocks.
Moreover it is scaled marks. If you have noticed that in history paper the score are fixed at certain numbers like 150,144,128,133,114etc.The marks are relative which is not so in mock test.
For me, actual marks are less than mocks. (Few exception are always there.)

Neither have Pub. Ad.nor History & nothing personal or against anyone but someone I know closely in the service (in service since 2008) is really pissed with B.tech guys! Said that technical subject people neither understand the rationale nor the principles & never apply brain where logical discretion for principled decisions is required. This was mostly in context with Ministerial & Court work! He pointed out some silliest things which were there in policies but sab nhi bata sakta idhar!

Said that technical subject people neither understand the rationale nor the principles & never apply brain where logical discretion for principled decisions is required. This was mostly in context with Ministerial & Court work! He pointed out some silliest things which were there in policies but sab nhi bata sakta idhar!

I saw it on telegram channel at around 13.00 hrs. Now it is deleted.He usually deletes the updates after some time. He also gave rough estimate of result declaration on 1-2 December.
Some info from a reliable source. (Fake news)
1) GS 4 marks have come down while GS-3's have increased. (Can't say how much exactly).
2) cut off is around 15 marks more than last year
3) optional marks have only increased by around 10-15 marks.
4) Literature, maths, Anthro and unorthodox optionals have performed well. (Don't know about rest)
P.S. can't say if this will turn out to be 100% true but the source is very reliable and a friend of mine. I have shared what I received.

GS1 - Indian Society - How to Study?
I always thought Society in GS1 is my strong area. But struggled to write answers in Mains 2022.
what we usually study: problems of women, poverty, urbanization, secularism, regionalism and other standard topics. Questions in Test series are usually direct and I scored well in this section.
But in UPSC exam,
Topics are difficult: Tier 2 cities & New middle class, salience of sect, globalization and new technology; And last year - population education, Gig economy & Women etc.
UPSC questions are one layer deeper than Test series questions. And are have a new dimension .
How to prepare for Society? What new sources to study to cover this extra level of deepness of topics? Do we have to look for any sociology material?

Gentleman, yesterday I went through gs 1 society paper and tried to recollect what I have written in paper. I was blank in almost all question and went into panic and anxiety mode.
My sources for society were ncert+FORUM book on society+ Test series question +current affair magazine. Due to time constraint and retention capacity of brain, it is always suggested to restrict one' s resources.
In gs 1 paper, most candidates find history and geography area as area of comfort due to preparation in prelims. Society is most neglected part of syllabus which is usually addressed during mains break and might be the cause of discomfort for many( including me)
Usually sociology optional candidates find this section easy, you can consult them for inputs.

Result should be immaterial. In reality it is NOT as the society is used to shunning away those who’ll fail. Most likely, the coaching/the peers will simply move the focus on those who’ll pass the Mains. A lot of us might receive apathy. People will make you feel that you didn’t work hard enough EVEN WHEN YOU DID ALL YOU COULD. There might be people who would’ve fallen ill and yet given their heart & soul. It’s time, we all initiate change & respect even those who didn’t make it. It’s time, we actually begin appreciating efforts and not just results. If Nishkama karma is taught by all UPSC coaches & teachers, then it’s time we celebrate the Nishkama karma Yogis & not just those who’ll make into the final list.
I just want all my peers to know that this guy behind the username of GaneshGaitonde is extremely proud of all of us. The intensity, the sacrifice & the madness that we all showed for the Mains while fighting numerous personal battles deserves nothing less than a salute 🙂. We all know what a mad battle mains is , Right ? At least, we must appreciate each other for setting an ambitious goal in life & working day in and day out to achieve it !

There is information ( came across multiple times)on telegram that history optional representation is very less in this year mains and there is review(rechecking / scaling) about this in upsc and hence the result was delayed.

cant say i completely agree with the theory that hard work doesnt yield result in upsc. i also think that its time to outgrow these debates. there are somethings one must learn in this journey, one being staying away from debates which produce no result.

My friend -an IIT passout -devoted two years to having command of math. He got 300 + in three consecutive years. Meanwhile he learnt the art of backchodi in GS and essay. Last year he got IAS in EWS quota. He came to exam centre in 30 lakh sedan.

There is no representation of subjects in CSE parliament. The equi-percentile statistical moderation adopted by upsc is blind and impersonal. After paper evaluation is over, no manual interference is allowed.

Mains 2020 mein toh as per my knowledge ek hi banda tha jiska top 100 mein Nam tha ( that too because of interview marks of 206/ 212. When the annual report will be out, you just see the hit rate( it would be less than 3percentage) ( compared to 10 percent in anthro psir and socio).Lesson to be learnt:For future aspirant don't take this optional. Yeh duba dalega.
