SFG – How it works

  • Select Focus Group (SFG) is a small group of students who are selected by ForumIAS every year for coaching them to clear the UPSC Prelims Examination. Every single candidate selected and retained consistently in the group with Top ranks has cleared the Prelims examination in the past.
  • 100 Students will be selected for the Select Focus Group, through the SFG Entrance Test, who will be required to report at 7AM every day 6 days a week to write an hour-long test based on a pre-planned syllabus, followed by a discussion on the same.
  • Candidates who are unable to make it to the SFG, will be maintained in a Reserve List, who can also write the tests. Candidates who couldn't clear the cutoff and are unable to make it into both SFG and RLG can register for the 2nd Entrance Test.
  • Tests are conducted daily and results are provided within 8 hours of test with Name and Rank list for candidates and parents to evaluate their daily performance. On the basis of rankles, about 50% of bottom performing students from SFG are migrated to the reserve list on a weekly basis, and an equal number of students from reserve list (RLG) are moved into SFG.
  • The decision of the management in this regard is final and not subject to dispute. Please note that this migration is done not keeping in mind the overall merit list but moving away bottom 50% from SFG and picking up an equal number of people from RLG.
  • Thus those who may be getting more than RLG students, but are bottom 50 in SFG will be moved to RLG.
  • Every month, the bottom 20% or so non-performing students are eliminated from the program to maintain the quality of competition.
  • All candidates writing the CSE 2021 are eligible to apply for the entrance test.
  • This year we introduce some changes as to how we conduct the SFG exam. Please note that changes that we bring are always in response to the examination pattern, the student feedback and our own learning with respect to how to best enable a serious candidate to clear the exam.

SFG Level 2 (Advanced)

  • SFG Level 2 is for people who have completed the reading and revision of the basic books and are now ready to take on the exam. The objective of the SFG Level 2 is as below:
  • Developing problem-solving skills for solving analytical, conceptual and thought based questions.
  • Developing skills to solve questions based on the application of the reading that they have done for Level 1
  • Mastering the art of handling questions from unknown areas and applying concepts from their wider reading which is relevant for the Civil Services Prelims Examination.
  • Developing time management skills, and being through with the syllabus
  • Providing a reliable, time-bound framework for revision just before the examination.

Application Procedure

Admission to the SFG and RLG are based on the rank of the candidate in the merit list of the SFG Entrance Test. Students can apply for the program by registering for the Entrance Test by paying a fee of Rs. 500+ GST. Candidates can register by visiting https://go.forumias.com/280.

The candidate must appear for the entrance test on the designated date and time, subsequent to which he/she will be admitted to the Select Group or the Reserve List.

Note:   Admissions to the SFG / RLG Group will only be on the basis of merit position of the candidate in the entrance test. Entrance Test will be held on 28th Feb. Candidates must register for the SFG Entrance Test by visiting https://go.forumias.com/280No admission will be granted to the candidate without appearing for the Entrance Test.

Fee Structure and Details:

Q8, although the sepoys shared all the grievances of the masses, I still don't think abolishing sati was a reason for their discontent as the masses themselves were divided on it, majority were in support while few ruling class and rich peasants, zamindars were opposed.

Q38, can someone confirm the "mutiny of sepoys" is same as " sepoy mutiny".

@sjerngal agree to it ...I also have same reservations in that question.

As far as I have read, abolition of sati and widow remarriage made the orthodox sections of society angry.
The question has specifically asked about "SEPOY DISCONTENT", why then is abolition of sati marked as a correct statement?
Please help !

I think the reason is same what you have mentioned. Sepoys were probably amongst the orthodox sections.

@Sheep It has been mentioned in Spectrum as well. Abolition of sati along with other socio-religious reforms caused discontent among the sepoys.

Arrange the conquest of states by Lord Dalhousie under Doctrine of Lapse policy in the chronological order:

1. Nagpur
2. Awadh
3. Jhansi
4. Satara

Ans is 4-3-1-2

According to spectrum - 2018 Edition

Lapsed States underLord Dalhousie (1848-56)
Satara (1848)
Sambhalpur (1849)
Bhagat (1850)
Udaipur (1850)

Nagpur (1854)
Jhanshi (1855)
Awadh (1856; on charge of mal-administration)

I didn't attempt the question but which one is correct Spectrum or Solution

About Q 23 dat Mountbatten plan rules out possibility of Independence for princely states.. Dis is an Equivocal observation.. one should avoid such conclusions and framing it in questions.. I know dat spectrum totally supports it... But there are also scores of other literature arguing contrary to it... Even independence act 1947 which was based on Mountbatten plan clearly granted freedom to the princely states one of the 3 options.... Dont ask me the sources just google it...its everywhere....chances are dere u people already know it yet...... Moreover i hav seen many debates on it dat Whether "they" were given these options.. where most of d time it seems they were indeed given the options...

It feels like it is one of those of our distorted history similar to dat of India havin boundary with Afghanistan..... Just to put up a strong case of our legitimacy over all the then princely states joinin our union...

Well I had many doubts in earlier tests but dis is d first time i m sharing it bcoz since last few days Forum is really trying to solve d doubts on d same day...... Which is really commendable... And I thank d team from all of our aspirants side....

Dear Students,

There is no change in the SFG - Test 18 question paper.

In Q.8- Aspirant raised a question that Abolition of Sati was in general a socio-religious cause for 1857 revolt and not with respect to discontent among the sepoys of British rule.

Explanation: But discontent among the sepoys was not limited to military matters and their consciousness was not divorced from that of the rural population. So, abolition of sati was also one of the reasons of discontent among the sepoys against the British rule.

In Q.14 – Aspirant had confusion on which was first state to lapse under the doctrine of lapse, Jhansi or Nagpur. According to spectrum 2019 edition for both (Jhansi and Nagpur) the year mentioned is 1854. But Jhansi was annexed in 1853 and Nagpur in 1854. Attaching below sources for reference. Several other sources also mention the same.

Source) https://www.britannica.com/topic/doctrine-of-lapse

In Q. 22 Doubt raised whether Tana Bhagat Movement began as a Sanskritization movement which is correct but statement 1 talks about- The movement started as a protest against the interference of outsiders which has been marked as correct. How the movement began is not the demand of the question.

In the NCERT, animal and plant activity is mentioned in BIOLOGICAL WEATHERING and not in Physical weathering.
please check.

@sjerngal It is also cause of expansion forces due to animal or plant activity.

Refer Pg no 49 last para (Physical weathering processes)

w.r.t Q31

this is what i have read

3 Stages of a River
  • YOUTHFUL STAGE (UPPER COURSE) – V- Shaped Valley >Erosion
  • MATURE STAGE (MIDDLE COURSE) – Meanders >Erosion and Deposition
  • OLD AGE STAGE (LOWER COURSE) – Floodplains >Deposition leading to Deltas

Vertical erosion or downward cutting dominates in early stage i.e valley stage but forum says valley stage is middle stage so lateral dominates vertical.

UK01,

@PixkaSaA same doubt.

Q 33

Answer must be "D".

Rotation of earth is responsible for Coriolis force and which result in  affecting wind and wind influences salinity.

Question haven't asked about direct effect, its in generalized sense of factors which can affect.

ArchAngel96,AGirlHasNoName
2.5k views
@UK01 yes right... rotation drives wind movement and direction which drives ocean currents and ocean currents are known to redistribute salinity among oceans.
However I feel, forum by mentioning "various seas and oceans" and not mentioning distribution or "between oceans" is talking of isolated water bodies, like a single ocean or a sea, still I feel rotation plays a part as even if we neglect the coriollis part, still evaporation is dependent on rotation about the tilted axis.

@ForumIAS-Academy With regard to the note issued on doubts related to Test paper 18. 'How the movement began(started)' and ' The movement started as'....both the statements will have the same answer or am I missing the point here??
PS: I didn't raise the doubt wrt this question but the clarification has put me in doubt :p
Kindly help!

3.1k views
@UK01 same doubt. rotation is resposbile for wind movement and hence current and consequently advection which is mentioned in the explanation
