SFG – How it works

  • Select Focus Group (SFG) is a small group of students who are selected by ForumIAS every year for coaching them to clear the UPSC Prelims Examination. Every single candidate selected and retained consistently in the group with Top ranks has cleared the Prelims examination in the past.
  • 100 Students will be selected for the Select Focus Group, through the SFG Entrance Test, who will be required to report at 7AM every day 6 days a week to write an hour-long test based on a pre-planned syllabus, followed by a discussion on the same.
  • Candidates who are unable to make it to the SFG, will be maintained in a Reserve List, who can also write the tests. Candidates who couldn't clear the cutoff and are unable to make it into both SFG and RLG can register for the 2nd Entrance Test.
  • Tests are conducted daily and results are provided within 8 hours of test with Name and Rank list for candidates and parents to evaluate their daily performance. On the basis of rankles, about 50% of bottom performing students from SFG are migrated to the reserve list on a weekly basis, and an equal number of students from reserve list (RLG) are moved into SFG.
  • The decision of the management in this regard is final and not subject to dispute. Please note that this migration is done not keeping in mind the overall merit list but moving away bottom 50% from SFG and picking up an equal number of people from RLG.
  • Thus those who may be getting more than RLG students, but are bottom 50 in SFG will be moved to RLG.
  • Every month, the bottom 20% or so non-performing students are eliminated from the program to maintain the quality of competition.
  • All candidates writing the CSE 2021 are eligible to apply for the entrance test.
  • This year we introduce some changes as to how we conduct the SFG exam. Please note that changes that we bring are always in response to the examination pattern, the student feedback and our own learning with respect to how to best enable a serious candidate to clear the exam.

SFG Level 2 (Advanced)

  • SFG Level 2 is for people who have completed the reading and revision of the basic books and are now ready to take on the exam. The objective of the SFG Level 2 is as below:
  • Developing problem-solving skills for solving analytical, conceptual and thought based questions.
  • Developing skills to solve questions based on the application of the reading that they have done for Level 1
  • Mastering the art of handling questions from unknown areas and applying concepts from their wider reading which is relevant for the Civil Services Prelims Examination.
  • Developing time management skills, and being through with the syllabus
  • Providing a reliable, time-bound framework for revision just before the examination.

Application Procedure

Admission to the SFG and RLG are based on the rank of the candidate in the merit list of the SFG Entrance Test. Students can apply for the program by registering for the Entrance Test by paying a fee of Rs. 500+ GST. Candidates can register by visiting https://go.forumias.com/280.

The candidate must appear for the entrance test on the designated date and time, subsequent to which he/she will be admitted to the Select Group or the Reserve List.

The candidate must pay the monthly fee as per the group he/she is allocated.

Note:   Admissions to the SFG / RLG Group will only be on the basis of merit position of the candidate in the entrance test. Entrance Test will be held on 28th Feb. Candidates must register for the SFG Entrance Test by visiting https://go.forumias.com/280No admission will be granted to the candidate without appearing for the Entrance Test.

Fee Structure and Details:

The course duration is of about two months and fees are charged on a monthly basis. Fees for the full duration of the program cannot be paid at one go.

  • For students selected in SFG - Rs. 1300 + GST (18%) per month
  • For students selected in RLG - Rs. 1900 + GST (18%) per month

Fees are to be paid once the candidate is selected for the program. A fee of Rs. 118 is to be paid additionally for the I-Card by all students.

Dear Students,

There is no change in the SFG - Test 19 question paper.

In Q.13: An aspirant raise doubt regarding the density of the continental crust vis a vis and oceanic crust. The source provided by the aspirant talks about thickness difference between oceanic crust and continental crust (continental crust is thicker).
Explanation: Question asked was with respect to density and not thickness. Layers that are less dense, such as the crust, float on layers that are denser, such as the mantle. Both oceanic crust and continental crust are less dense than the mantle, but oceanic crust is denser than continental crust. This is also one of the reason why the continents are at a higher elevation than the ocean floor.

In Q.25 Doubt raised on whether S waves are present/absent in aesthenosphere.
Explanation: It is true that Surface waves can travel only through solid materials. But aesthenosphere is not completely liquid, it is partially molten thus S waves travel through it as it gets refracted/reflected. Therefore, the statement that S waves are absent from the aesthenosphere is incorrect.

In Q.28 Doubt raised regarding the international date line and date change.

Explanation: Here 2nd Option is in context of Western and Eastern hemisphere which are geographical terms. Western hemisphere lies west of the prime meridian and Eastern hemisphere, east of the prime meridian. Now keeping International Date Line (IDL) at the centre of globe, on the eastern side of IDL lies the Western hemisphere and on the western side of IDL lies the Eastern hemisphere.  Thus, there is a loss of a day when we move from Western hemisphere to Eastern hemisphere on crossing International Date Line (IDL).

In Q.31 Doubt raised about lateral and vertical erosion.
Explanation: Valley stage is the Middle course where lateral tends to replace vertical erosion. Thus statement 2 is incorrect.

In Q.33 Doubt raised whether rotation of earth has effect on salinity.
Explanation: There is no direct or immediate relation between them. This has also been substantiated in the source given.

@ForumIAS-Academy but direct relationship has not been asked only the factors affecting has been asked, rotation has effect on evaporation and evaporation has affect on salinity, if evaporation is affecting salinity then rotation which regulates evaporation doesn't affect salinity doesn't fit. How will convection current take place if there is no rotation and no day and night ??

Revolution of the Earth along with the tilt affects the distribution of the planetary winds, doesnt it? If the Earth didnt revolve around the sun, there wouldnt be a migration of the pressure belts right?

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks!

HeNeArKr,

@captainhaddock Yeah that was my doubt too . In the solution it is written , due to revolution day and nights occur which is a wrong statement as day and night occur due to rotation.

Dear Students,

There is no change in the SFG - Test 20 question paper.

Q.2Some students had confusion between the rotation of Earth and the revolution of Earth and its impact on planetary winds.

Explanation:
Earth’s rotation: When the Earth rotates on its own axis, it impacts the planetary winds by preventing the air current from moving in a straight line from the equator to the poles. This effect is called the coriolis effect. Eg. Between 30 and 60 degrees latitude, the winds moving towards the poles curve east, forming the prevailing westerlies.

Earth’s revolution: Earth revolves in an orbit around the Sun. There is no direct impact on planetary winds because of the earths revolution. However, there is variation in the lengths of day and night from season to season due to the revolution of Earth on a tilted axis.

So, no change in the answer, but the explanation needed further clarification. Kindly refer to the source given below.

@Deltakin how can i improve my score in comprehension?

@Deltakin how can i improve my score in comprehension?

Even RC have different inference taken by different point of view. In Today's paper also 10-12 questions are doubtful and proper explanation haven't given to justify those answer so that one can reach on correct conclusion. There are always 2 options which are a way closer.

UPSC CSAT papers have proper keywords for RC questions i.e.  Logical Inference , assumption, most rational and practical implications, logical and crucial message, conclusion etc.

Today's paper is somewhat not on those lines, it's more inclined towards CAT or GMAT RCs.

Still If Someone can give insights on handling these comprehension that will be way helpful. People scoring in range of 70-100, if possible please suggest how one can improve.

@UK01 the thing with RCs is you always think that the explanation given is wrong but what is required in the RC is what the author wanted to convey. Generally, the RCs are an extract of some larger article, so inference of the given RC becomes difficult as you don't have the complete article for understanding the context. This is where your comprehension comes in and this comes with practice. Although a few pointers which helped me
1.) try to think less while solving RC questions and use only the data given in the RC to arrive at the answer, no personal biases(the gut feeling is seldom correct)
2.) Don't look for the correct option rather eliminate the wrong options.
3) Csat is just a qualifying exam, you can skip RCs or just attempt the factual questions instead of the inference-based questions even this paper had factual questions which could have been attempted to clear the cutoff.

Thanks

I have a very weird doubt.
I have been scoring decently well in FORUM IAS SFG tests and the All India Simulator Tests, however when I attempt Vision Ias mock tests, I score very low. It is highly demotivating.
Is it just me or does it happen with anyone else too?

I read that AIR FRONTS are formed when air masses of different temperatures meet.
Please clarify.
3.1k views
@sjerngal yes, fronts are formed at lower atmospheric level that is below atmospheric boundary layer and jet streams higher close to the boundary layer or even sometimes above it. The reason for both is same, that is contrasting temperature difference between air masses that meet.

In Q8, I feel statement d is not correctly put, like mentioned in solution itself, winds blow from southwest to northeast, mentioning only northeast in option statement makes it wrong, as even in normal sign convention, wind direction is stated from the origin side and not destination.
