Failing to beat the inertia ever since the prelims 2023 results came out. This has led me onto a procrastination cycle, almost similar to what happened last year which extended till late september, will ensure not to repeat the same mistakes this time around. I'll try and make the best use of this thread to build myself some accountability, i encourage all my fellow aspirants to do the same, this will certainly help us get over the cse 23 hangover. Time for the pity party to end. All the best!

It seems like i always tend to overestimate my abilities wrt my super ambitious weekly targets, but anyway i think i managed some okayish hours (5-6 hr), i never thought optional notemaking could be such a cumbersome take, hopefully i'll get done with it by October.

Hello everyone,
This is Simran, rank 96 CSE 2022. Currently stuck in the hospital recovering from flu, which has given me a lot of unexpected free time.
If anyone needs any kind of help with essays or with GS, please feel free to reach out.
Thank you :)
Good evening maam, glad to have you back in the community!
I am writing my mgp tests, however, i can never get myself to revise my entire notes + value addition is another issue. How do you suggest i go about the same? Also, do you think mock scores are somewhat reflective of our score in the actual exam?
Wish you a speedy recovery!
l Targets for the week l 9/11/23 - 16/11/23
1) Agriculture (GS 3)
2) Economy (GS 3)
3) Sociology Optional Paper 1 (Chap 7 - 10)
4) Revise Dipin sir's CA Handout
5) Sociology Paper 1 PYQ
6) GS-3 Test 1
Although i'm consistent with the amount of content that i've been doing however i feel that it is still not sufficient. Really need to catch up with the MGP schedule + optional, before i entirely switch to prelims mode by December end. Hope you all are doing well, keep working hard guyss, we got this!
this may come as a little absurd question, but all my friends who've cleared prelims in the past, what has been the game changer for you? or what are some non-negotiables?@TomiokaGiyu @Tata @DM and everyone else.. I really need a perspective, consecutive failures at pre have been pretty hard
- First do the analysis of pyqs i.e all the questions along with options (mainly geography , history, envt)
- Refer andrevise basic books(list u already knew )
- Read Newspaper and interlink with static topics (this one mainly for economy and polity)
- Lastly practice test series papers and do not ignore CSAT(which has become difficult in recent times )
- In final exam logical guessing also plays a role
hey, super thanks for this , btw how many years do you suggest one should trace the PYQs, some say 2013 onwards while some suggest 2000 onwards..
@Incoming giving mocks and analysing and revising those mocks at least 4-5 times
right, i think this year although i prepared decently well but probably didn't analyse them just as much, will work on this, thanks!

Having flunked prelims in 2022, I did few mistakes back then which I avoided this year
1. Losing sanity in the last month, because of which I could not revise things properly.
2. PYQs are not low hanging fruits, those are fruits which are already fallen, just bend down and pick them up
3. SFG helped a lot in building discipline and basics (just dont give a fuck to low scores in sfg)
4. Be cool while attempting the paper, many people lose the battle in D day despite having a solid preparation.
5. This year I assumed that I'm going to clear it by all means (despite losing interest in exam) fake it in your mind and it will believe it.
this is sooo insightful! really really appreciate this..
Also, how did you utilize your sfg tests, even i did both the levels (gave >80% of the tests), was under top 50 in 7-8 tests, plus, how did the pyqs helped you?
@DM @sillypoint @Incoming @MoorkhDuryodhan @iphoole CA (Dipin sir's) students peer whatsapp/tg group that one could be added to?
none that i'm aware of, atleast for my batch. You can organize a group of people from the community itself.

Non -negotiables -
1.Don’t run to much after xyz current affairs compilations (most of them claim that almost all questions were directly asked from them 😂) instead focus on static. If you don’t have hold over it you are not gonna make it
2.Stick to one source per subject, revise it multiple times (2,3 times doesn’t count as revision)
3. You must not get easy questions or questions directly asked from standard sources wrong .As it’s not the absurd questions or out of the questions but the direct questions which ensures if one is going to clear or not
4 .PYQS - not only try to solve them but make them your friends as only they will show you the right directions as what is important what’s not ,where you should dedicate more time ,where you should not ,how upsc plays with mind of aspirants .Although probability of asking questions directly from pyqs maye be 2-3 but themes get repeated,so does many options.
5.Solve test as they will be the one to show you where you stand ,what’s going wrong and what needs to be done .So they are like practice drills before final battle, where you practice every possible scenario so that you don’t get surprised on final day .Don’t focus on scores but on the process and progress with every test ( Numbers mostly lies as data in upsc questions)
5. You should be at your near prelims not before not after
6. Despite being studying after everything and doing everything, always be open to surprises so that you don’t get anxious in exam hall and be calm, composed and confident that you gonna fight till last question.
7 . Don’t neglect csat at any cost
Game changer -
1 . Practice ,practice, practice and practice. As we can go on revising and revising ,knowing almost everything but if we cant apply it there is no use of that knowledge
2. In mocks put yourself under pressure like if its full length try to finish it in 1.5 hr or half length-45 mins ( this is what i do )
3.Knowledge can be transferred but not the wisdom, that can only be gained through experiences so first of all be truthful to yourself accept your shortcomings and work upon them
Above learnings or strategy’s are what i have learned from my teachers@Neyawn ,special thanks and mention to @Sherkhan1428 for sharing this few years ago and many of my other friends
this is so extensive and super objective at the same time, will definitely use this advice for keeping myself in the right direction, btw how did you go about preparing current affairs? and also which book did you refer for PYQs?

For current affairs i was regular with newspaper (also referred to two of famous sources but was not of any use ) , for pyqs used disha publication(for 1995 to 2019) ,upsc simplified by IFS Sourav kumar
I've seen IFS sourav kumar's book sample and it looked promising, which when would you suggest disha or sourav kumar?

Socio chap 10
Newspaper (22/11 and 23/11)
Studied around 6.5 hrs yesterday, out of which i spent around 5 hours completing a 3 hr lecture in an attempt to make the 'perfect' notes loaded with facts only to realize the futility of this exercise, finally i've realised that its better to have above average content with decent value addn than having perfect but incomplete content.
Can anyone give some insights on Upendra Gaur Sir's sociology course??? (Better alternative suggestions are welcome)
I was his student in 2021, you can rely on him for paper 1, his paper 1 notes are brilliant for concept building, the coverage is good too. Also, you have to be very fast when he is explaining a concept, he doesn't dictate notes, you have to note down whatever he narrates in class.
Paper 2, I haven't revised his notes but the Market sentiment is that his paper 2 coverage/content is sub par.
What did you guys think of the SFG entrance test?
ehh, made me realise how much i need to revise, although some sections like polity, economy, 2-3 questions from history remained my go-to subjects(just like everyone else), however csat math was scary. IMO, people scoring around 56 +/-2 should be in the top 100, because last year people who scored above 57/58 were in the top 50 (Correct me if i'm wrong), however, these are unnecessary speculations, what's important is that, for me the test was a good eyeopener and gave me a good reality check ki abhi bhot mehnat lagegi.. :)
What resources you are following for sociology?I am new to this optional, need a little guidance regarding booklist etc.
Paper 1
Upendra Gaur sir's notes for thinkers
Sleepy Classes YT free lectures for topic 7 + Missing topics from nitin sangwan (bureaucracy, new social movements)
Nitin Sangwan for Chapter 1,2,3,5,6,8 and 9
Chapter 10 - combined nitin sangwan and Upendra sir's notes
Paper 2
Sunya IAS Paper 2 notes (the book looks extensive and i will rely entirely on these for paper 2)
One must note that no source is ever enough for paper 2, a large portion overlaps with your GS 1 society, you have to sprinkle in some thinkers and theories to differentiate it from a GS answer.
In addition to this, Sociology related CA, value additions from test series and solving PYQs will help you cover your syllabus decently.

I've noticed that if I don't maximize my output in the morning session (3-3.5 hrs), the rest of the day is spent in guilt and no real productivity
@Incoming even i face this rigid behavior about morning routine,.. i think we should move to next task in schedule and look at morning task at the end of day..depending on priority or utility....also, guilt must be faced by tearing through that feeling n first thing is to eliminate any distraction that comes after guilt be it music or whatever youtube etc
In my case, I don't have a rigid timetable, guilt is the culprit here, but yes, will have to tear through the guilt, have to cut down on my daily YT consumption

I have been wanting to say this. Like Mera dissent note samaj lo yeh? Ayush sir, has good takes. I have learnt a lot from him. A lot. But 'kabhi kabhi' some of his takes are not so good. We all need introspection I guess? No one is perfect after all, right?~end
Also, if I clear capf ka pet, I'm thinking of skipping yeh saal ka pre. Is it a good idea? Parents toh naa bol rahe hai. They don't want to me skip pre, plus they don't want me to join defences(cds nikla hai)
And tbh, I don't wanna disappoint my parents.

Even in my case, I've cleared cds(pre) but yaar ssb ke 5 din seem like a gamble, given that prelims would be just around the corner.
Ayush sir vala point I agree, although I agree with most of what he says and yet, there are things that I don't resonate with, I dismiss them as a part of his experiential learning, maybe I'll hit chords with him when I reach his experience, tab tak ke liye mein apne echo chamber se apni ego feed krlunga xp no hate :)
I'm really happy to see aspirants like you who are enjoying the process and respecting it whatsoever, mains 2024 vala thread dekh kr, process bhot daunting lagta hai, but, tbh, everytime I compare my position corresponding my previous attempt, I always notice ki har baar I've been grossly unprepared and how far I've come, my point being, if you just follow the process you'll ALWAYS notice an improvement (in both absolute and relative terms), so maybe, it may not appear as evidently today, but there's always room for improvement (atleast in absolute terms).

Went to my school reunion yesterday, it felt so good to be back to the place where this ias dream was born, meeting your teachers feels really inspiring and definitely worked as a reminder as to 'why' I started this prep.
School friends mein maturity ka koi naamu nishaan nhi tha or probably it's the preparation that makes one extremely critical of people :/
Overall, a good day!

My sfg scores (polity) seem to have plateaued around 60-65 (irrespective of the difficulty of the test), unable to break this ceiling, whereas my sfg peers are in the mid-late 70s, requesting inputs.. @Neyawn sir, your suggestions?
P.S : i've fixed the problem of silly mistakes to some extent, apart from that what more should i do
@Incoming try revising only the starred facts in the morning before the test. It helps a lot. I have seen a jump in my score by 5-7 marks whenever my mind and body allows me to wake up @5.
Did that today, score improved, thanks mate!

Inspired by@Incoming going to write my daily progress
From a below average student who use to score 10+ grace marks in final exam and who could'nt write or read english till 8th class to a Upsc aspirant. Failed pre 3 times, then joined forumCGP 2022 batch. Upcoming is my 4th Attempt and I'm not going to mess with this attempt.
Major mistakes in my last attempts
- not covering syllabus on time
- not completing test series
- not attempting enough mocks
- practising csat and giving mocks
Target is to finish my prelims prep one month prior i.e By 25th april
- Finish my test series
- 30 mock papers GS and CSAT respectively
Feels good to have people with such great resilience in this community, welcome to the grind mate, power to you!

Hi
1.Stick to sfg level 1&2 fir sectional avoid other coaching institutions test ( as doing one thing but doing it throughly and religiously matters)
2.For csat-do it when you get bored of studying gs ( it depends on how you fare in it ,if you are not good at it do it properly)
3.For pyqs don’t give dedicated time -do it in your free time ,don’t only try to solve them do there through analysis as it will help you to understand how upsc thinks and ask questions
4.FLTs - first sort out how many you will give and then fix the interval at which you will be doing it like after ever 3,4,5 day as per your strategy
5.CA classes do them offline and revise one time after going to room and one time coming to next class
6.Same goes with revision can give one day a week to revise all the test you did in that week
Hope it helps (these are my learnings and observations so take it with pinch of salt )
Keep going as said -
वह पथ क्या पथिक कुशलता क्या..
जिस पथ में बिखरें शूल न हों
नाविक की धैर्य-कुशलता क्या…
जब धाराएँ प्रतिकूल न हों ।
As our best comes after facing the unfavourable circumstances as they help us to get out of our comfort zone
wow, i feel so enlightened, i'll chart a proper plan to incorporate these.. much needed words of wisdom and motivation _/\_
all the best for your results!!

I go to the library so the AC there helps, moreover, find the most productive hours of your day and try and maximize your output in those shifts to make up for the lost time in the 12-5 shift. Also, avoid unnecessary travel + stay hydrated :)
