@GaneshGaitonde sir i nvr attempted more than 70 in all my 3 prelims including this one,
2021- attempted 61- 88
2022- attempted 70- 115.15

I wanted to ask those who have cleared this prelims. I can clearly see that attempting on the higher side has worked for many. Do you agree that our attempts should be on higher side given the increased subjectivity in the questions ? Has someone with conservative attempt (Less than 80) cleared here ?

Kindly share your experience if possible

Yes there are people who have attempted around 80 and gotten through. But they are a small minority - like 2-3 people out of every 100 people you may have made it. It works only for a very small number of people. So one will have to find for themselves what works for them. But in case of doubt, always better to attempt more questions.

Forum should provide a "save post" option, so a student can save all the wisdom or info from other seniors. (I don't know if one already exists. if it does, please tell)

Hello Sir, That’s what I have been observing. The majority attempts in 85+ range. Just had a conversation with a guy who attempted ALL 100 and cleared this prelims with minimal study. Still, I don’t know how people gather that kind of courage to attempt ALL 100 :P

Great accuracy ! But then you must have developed the knack to select Qns wisely. It’s very difficult to be absolutely sure of your own answer in the present state/nature of the preliminary exam.

My friend cleared forest. He had attempted all 100 qsns. His logic - when paper is tough doing more qsns is rewarding especially being a veteran as the probability of tukkas going right is higher compared to noobs due to all the accumulated knowledge.

I've always attempted 80 or fewer questions.

2018 - 80

2019 - 81

2020 - 75

2021 - 76

2022 - 78

2023 - 76

Cleared cutoff everytime but 2018.

I'd suggest one shouldn't decide the no. of attempts beforehand. Rather, they should decide it after seeing the paper. Do the first round and see how many questions they can attempt with reasonable accuracy (80%+).

If you've done 35 or more, you CAN clear with ~80 attempt. If you've attempted 30 or less, you HAVE TO attempt more questions.

Disclaimer: This is not a prescription, just a possibility. Use your discretion as it may not work for everyone. Also, if you're aiming for Forest cutoff, it may not be suitable for you unless you've superhuman accuracy.

Thanks man for your insights. I am particularly cheering for you this year from the peripheries. Won't jinx by speaking too much :P. All the best :)

@GaneshGaitonde 2020- 84. Out.
2021- 94. Got 102. Wrote civils and forest mains.
2022- break
2023- 96 attempted. Dint apply for forest. Was getting 94 to 102.
My exp has been going beyond 90 as I did not have accuracy.
So its a personal thing.

@GaneshGaitonde true, i used to attempt around 70 75 even in test series
made static my forte and never cared about random Q
this way it became easy to identify doable Q

I attempted 80 questions, was scoring between 92-100 and cleared IFoS as well. Last year I had attempted 87 and 6/7 questions that I attempted in last iteration all turned out to be wrong. Missed cutoff by 1 mark. So didn't want to take risks at all this time.

Having History Optional helped as I got almost all history questions correct this time.

Why less engineers are appearing in the top 10 list? Do people from humanities write in a different style?

@Tata I think ppl with non-eng background start preparing before they graduate, not the case in most eng background ppl, ppl say they cleared in first attempt there are obviously some geniuses and lucky ppl but most of them start prep before than others.

1st timer

Attempted- 72

Score-88  (checked from insights only)

Have had the feeling since last 10 days that more attempts might have worked even better

Couldn't attempt the paper properly due to almost no experience of time controlled mocks

which was probably very imp due to this year surprise paper

1-50>34 attempted (should've attempted more here probably)

50-100>38 attempted

had heard some bad stories about this last minute attempt wala stuff

so calmed my nerves and let the paper go

There are Romans :-)

I see a logical fallacy in attempting 100. If you attempt 100 ( without not having bubbled ), try to unmark 5-10 which you know are complete tukka, and you should see a jump in score.

I had attempted 77 this time and I was getting highest from Forum answer key (55 correct and 22 wrong) followed by IAS Baba (54 correct and 23 wrong).

I don't remember my attempts in 2022 but my score was 93.xx and I am sure my attempts must have been around 75-80 that time too.

I never understood this hype around doing extremely high attempts like 90+ even if one has no idea of the questions. I do take my risks and do guesswork but only in questions where I have at least some idea of things being asked or if I am at 50/50 and with the cutoff reducing with each subsequent year, I don't think it is wise to take that much risk either.

Sure, before 2020 when cutoffs were easily 100+, you had to do high attempts to even be in the race.
