A genuine doubt !

Many Australian Cricketers have pulled out of the IPL. Even Ashwin has gone home to be with family. And we have statements like these from cricketers like Andrew Tye and Adam Zampa :

Looking at it from an Indian point of view, how are these companies and franchises spending so much money, and the government, on the IPL when there’s people not being able to get accepted into hospital?"

"Someone who has a family member on death bed doesn’t care about cricket."

Now if this were an ethics case study...or an interview question...How do you defend this ? Or for that matter, How do you attack this ? Is it really right for the IPL to take place amidst such gloom and doom ? Or are they just "doing their jobs?" I mean I have too many questions. I even had an argument with my brother who gave some meaningless arguments.

But you guys are different. How to form an opinion on this ?

I read a meme yesterday "The IPL 2021 is going to be remembered like the band that played on while the Titanic sank."

Certainly cancelling IPL matches will make no difference to the crisis the nation is going through. And if you talk about entertainment, I don't think there is any dearth of it. If not IPL then Salman Khan's Radhe or many tv series one can binge watch (like TVF's Aspirants). The population currently watching IPL is not in conjunction with the population standing in line for oxygen cylinder or remdesivir or hospital beds. So, I don't think IPL has any big role to play in solving or exaggerating (since it involves no congregation) the covid infection in India.

Now talking about Ethics? India currently is going through an unprecedent crisis. The number of deaths we can see is heart-wrenching not just because people are dying because of virus, but due to lack of basic healthcare - oxygen, medicines, and hospital beds. And that too in the capital city, business city, and main state capitals (along with the remote areas that is going unaccountable). Earning hands, elders, men, women - people are loosing loved ones despite having all the money to spend for their treatment but no resource to cure. Despite putting one of the harshest lockdown last year and losing lives and livelihoods, we could not prepare ourselves and the "system" for this calamity. So, in this situation, IPL 2021 being played in India is technically right but ethically wrong.

1. We can't celebrate cricket in our backyard when people are dying on the roads. It could have been played in UAE, like it was last year. Especially being played in Delhi, is a living example of class divide.

2. BCCI receives a substantial amount of funding from government in the form of tax rebates, grounds, logistics and so does the Indian players in the form of government jobs, recognition etc. - so, they have a moral obligation to contribute to the national crisis of this size. This year IPL could have been partially or completely turned into a charity. It would have made no difference to the lives of the players and the board but a huge difference to the population who are even not getting a dignified death.

As my friend above have mentioned Gandhiji's Talisman - we can easily use that to understand the relevance of IPL in today's crisis. - (although it is way better than political rallies and religious gathering).

On a different topic about mental health related to funeral pyre images - I just want to share an incident. Day before yesterday while I was about to sleep around 1am, I heard a voice outside. Peeked through the window and found that there was a truck with an oxygen cylinder being carried to the house just opposite to mine. I spent the next 1 hour watching through the window the girl (probably the daughter) and the wife fitting the cylinder and noting the oxygen level time and again and struggling to make their old patient feel better. After an hour, I believe things got better and they switched off their light. And finally I closed my window and made myself sleep. The funeral pyre is a reality, the oxygen crisis is a reality, the lack of beds is a reality, and mental health is a reality. And all of these should be out there so that the world and the history knows what we are going through. I am privileged to close my blinds so that I could not see the uncle gasping for breathe while I study on my laptop, so does the entire community who can take a break from the internet to get their sanity back. But the truth must be told for the dignity of those unreported deaths.

Be it IPL, rallies, very late response from govt, politicization of issues - it just goes on to show the apathetic nature of our society. Even we are a part of it. Reality is dual - deaths & denial. The denial caused such havoc. Jab tak hamare sath nahi hota, tab tak kuch nahi hua. Downplaying crisis.

However, misinformation, too much information is also responsible for this. Minds are numbed. Fatalism which is an old curse is revived. People have become helpless and accepting the situation.

The chalta hai attitude must be abhorred. Nahi chalta hai. Deaths and disease is not a number. Today saw the news of a prominent tv reporter's death. The channel had muted it's shrill bg sounds. Death hits only when it's personal is it?

I saw below comment and was smiling to myself, what if UPSC sees the words like 'One Stop solution for Art, Culture, Heritage'. I honestly dont know much about him or the book but the vision looks grandier.

@SergioRamos They'll tell around 20th May I guess. Before that I doubt upsc will communicate anything regarding exam. Although many insiders were saying that prelims is definitely going to be postponed, but they are just guessing it, no concrete info.

Since nothing was announced today, Interviews cannot begin before May 16(due to the mandatory 15-day notice).
With each passing day, the beginning date of interview will also pass.

It is impossible to wrap up interviews before the Prelims now.

UPSC will not conduct prelims before interview. In all fairness exam is postponed.
We just need the new date.

I really want to believe UPSC won't conduct the Prelims on June 27th. I really do, but at the same time i'm scared that it's just an attempt by myself to rationalize slacking off.

Somewhere in October as UPSC has some free days in their schedule that time around.

P.S.- Do not trust a random person on the internet! :P
