I have a doubt:

I have not been in touch with any coaching or a fellow aspirant during all the years of my prep.

Those who go to coaching or have contacts with fellow aspirants, I want to ask them few things:

1) Those who score like 450s etc in GS do they know 16-18 answers perfectly or they are also like us stuck at 12-13 satisfactory answers.

2)Those who score above 450s, how close are their answers to the model answers posted by coachings.I was looking at model answers lately and found that I have put several of their points in my answers but not as good as them.

Thanks

@dragon_rider no bro. It does apply to H1B as well. And yeah i am on H1B. Even if travel ban is lifted in a couple of months, embassies will not get back into action soon (after a lot of backlogs were cleared by the embassies post 1st wave when they were entertaining only emergency appointments, i was able to get an appointment this June during my trip to India for prelims and now that appointment also would get cancelled)- i need h1b visa stamp since i would be travelling outside US on this visa for the first time. i cant reenter the US without a stamp.

Oh yeah I got it confused with the air bubble agreement which allows visa holders.

Opened telegram account just to check updates from kaptaan saab. Read the pinned messages. Overarching feeling is that pre will be postponed. If it isnt, we wont be updated.

Regarding prelims:

Heard Sept/Oct from one friend. (Tried to confirm this)

While confirming

From the most credible I got this:

No meeting whatsoever held in upsc regarding prelims 2021.

Any decision regarding prelims 21 will be taken only in May end. If before that he will inform me.

Best wishes,

Kaptaan 🙏🏼

Combined medical service exam notification has been deferred.

Since some doctors also appear for UPSC civil services, and in view of the recent decision of PMO regarding deferment of NEET PG atleast till August 2021, it seems like pre will not happen before September 2021.

I know people have bigger issues, even more in these scary times due to Covid. When I pinged Shabbir Sir, he asked me to thank my stars and reminded me that I was in a good place- totally correct. But my frustration just doesnt go away! It cant

I am in the US and i have been preparing for this exam for the last almost an year. Rather i should say i resumed my prep after failing thrice in CSE and having left for my masters. Age 31; didnt switch jobs which could have definitely fetched me 50k$ more; didnt also put extraordinary efforts at work that could have made me a star in my LOB- bas jitna bola, utna kam deliver kr diya; sidelined every possible fun for this exam, there is so much to get distracted from when you get to stay in the US - lake view apartment hai mera and i can see Mt Rainier from my balcony if it is not cloudy in Seattle. Friends make trips to several places every long weekend, but i dont accompany them, i choose to study; they party and talk of buying homes! With so many temptations and fun that my friends do infront of me, I have been studying and now US has imposed a travel ban for flights from India that is unlikely to be uplifted until and unless cases come down in the range of 50-60k.

I feel as if  I prepared for abattle that i couldnt even fight in.

Sala kbhi kbhi lgta hai ambitious hona bhi bekar chiz hai. Kum cheezo se jo log satisfy ho jate hain, their life is so much simpler.

Aisa lag rha zindagi khacchar ki tarah mehnat krva rahi thi for no reason! Frustrated to the core!

You're only 31, you have a lake view apartment in Seattle, and can shift jobs even now to make that additional $50k. Doesn't sound like a shabby life by any stretch of imagination. Personally, I have to agree with Shabbir sir. But I guess you must be so committed to the idea of clearing CSE that the possibility of not being allowed to try one last time frustrates you a lot. To each his own.

However, I have a genuine doubt. When you had such a solid backup, did you happen to lose your fear of failure in the exam?

Man, I did check this group, only to find constant political debates. Not the constructive and genuine criticisms, but mindless rant over the same person. Felt like I was on twitter. But I guess thats understandable since the frustration is quite high and situation still continues to be alarming. Its just that purpose of the group isnt the way it is claiming to be. Luckily we dont see much of this happening in this forum, at least for now.  Sanity is scarce nowadays.

In my city, the situation is pretty grim. Hence there is a constant fear of sorts, further aggravated by the occasional ambulance sirens whizzing by. Plus, staying at home all day with the family has hampered productivity. I seem to slack off pretty easily.

Trying to cope with it, I have now stopped with big targets for myself and have made up my mind feeling content even if I am able to put in 4-5 hours of work a day. Also, a major portion of work is not reading or learning, but solving MCQ as they are somewhat more engaging. It seems to work temporarily.

Till the official postponement news does not come, we have to work, however tough it is.

About test series, I always have genuine doubts.

As I flunked prelims 2020, got the evaluator's job at one of the reputed coaching.  Issues with test series are first they have standard marks for answer like no to 6+ for 10 marker and no 8+ to 15 marker. Also as there were two stages for evaluation (atleast where I worked), I was the first one to evaluate and there was another person to verify some things, so no way I could have given marks as I wanted. And the recency bias of one copy changes the perspective about other's answer drastically.

for an avg answer I would give 3.5/4 then after going through 3-4 copies I usually can't decide what to be considered as avg answer. Why to give 3.5 not 4 and why not 4.5 and so on.  in this process some great answer gets just above avg marks and some below avg gets undeserving marks.  It is basically a flawedexercise. (My feelings were same when I used to give Vision tests for 2019 mains, where they would give 3 marks for some random last minute answer and for a good answer by any means just 3.5 )

Don't know how it works for others but atleast these are my experiences.

Also if in UPSC we see marks like 140+ it means good answers can be rewarded like 8/10 or 12/15.

But one thing is for sure standout copies can't be ignored, it is hard to give any suggestions to them. There were some aspirants I knew would clear mains and most of them did (among the copies I evaluated)

Also the wholesomeness of answer can be sensed when one finishes the conclusion. The only issue remains in some questions where either miss some part of the answer or fail to understand the question properly.

PS: Baaki to UPSC jaaney

I have a full time job, so it's a little easier for me I guess. Any little time I get, it automatically gets devoted to UPSC.

But, there is always an indecision whether to focus on Prelims or on optional.

@Patootie yeah i lost the fear of failure. I also somehow was not obsessed this time with the exam, meaning I was only putting in the required efforts without even thinking about the results-(i know it sounds so ideal). Not because i have a backup but  because I had learnt to expect nothing from this uncertain exam.

And yeah i never said i had a shabby life.   the frustration is obvious here. The efforts dont have to be for nothing. Its like a veteran cricketer had to prove his/her worth post criticism, he/she put in the required efforts, got into the WC squad but got sick at the last moment/ the WC got washed off.
