Every language is good and should be respected. Jiska jo mann kre learn, any imposition is wrong.
The bare minimum hindi which helps during travel is present at railway station signboards everywhere. People and places near tourist places in south and other places know that bare minimum to accommodate everyone. So, we should also try to accommodate others grievances.

@MC CullumIts good to take pride in one's culture. But any hyper pride wont do anyone good.

I do have one argument. Southern leaders are very under-represented in Delhi power politics. Just one PM from south. I feel that their reluctance to accommodate Hindi will not let them become mass leaders like Modi etc with a wide support base. Maybe a little Hindi can enable us to see great mass leaders from South as PMs in Delhi in future.Thats my thought. You can disagree.

PS - I respect every language. Lived 2 years in Bangalore. Still regret that I could not learn Kannada. :)

i lived 4 years in bangalore. mixed emotions. halaki i never myself didnt put any effort to learn kannada.

I am north indian, working in South India.. ye debate na khatam hona. They are very proud of their languages and all languages are classical. So they think it's their right to protect.
They think that incursion of Hindi is danger to their own language which is in main stream for 1000s of years.
They take Hindi and southern classical language debate as cultural strife.

More specifically bro, it's Tamil Nadu guys.. they are strong anti- north indian.

Karnataka , Andra guys are very jovial people.. they are nice human being acche log hai.. in fact many north indian people enjoy welcoming nature of kannadiga. They compare intolerant people of North India as language tolerant people of karnataka..

Even Telangana people who work in tamil, they complain, ki they are very specific about Tamil. They do not adjust.

There is saying, south me tamilians se bacch k rahna..

Kerala- I don't know abt them..

The discourse is not on North vs South. Rather it has been Dravida vs Aryan. In Tamil Nadu, any association with so called Aryan identity is very much criticized. When MK Stalin paid courtesies to Modi, this was criticized by hardcore Dravidians. Stalin then had to reassert that there is no compromise with Ideology.

That is also why Hindi is very much rejected because it is associated with Indo-Aryan language. Any attempt of imposition is protested because it tries to give a message that Aryans are subjugating Dravidians.

This is based on my limited knowledge. Rest history and anthropology optional guys can better elaborate.

long long years ago, Herman Melville faced the viva-voce board in his engineering college. He was very tense because of inadequate preparation. When the first roll no. student came out of viva room, perplexed Melville asked her how to tackle the board, the student replied- "Just smile if you don't know the answer. "

Melville internalized this trick and passed all successive viva voce with flying colours. After Graduating, he wrote this book as his Ph.D thesis and the rest is history.
