@dancingminioncan be done. But I have heard from those who have been in similar situations that opaqueness about the gap can also create a general negativity in the minds of recruiters, so one may not be better off as compared to choosing the other option (i.e. giving exact reason). Everyone has different opinion and anything can work. Let's just keep trying..☺

My dear candidates,

On a scale from 1 to 10.

What was the difficulty level of last year's GS

& What is the difficulty level of this year's GS.

apart from GS2, felt the rest of GS papers were similar to last year.
Essay was a bit easier as it was along expected lines.
IMO,
difficulty level(2018) - 8
difficulty level(2018) - 8.5 (due to GS2)

Why is it that EWS is expected to be tooo low? I personally think it would be 10-12 marks down from UR but reading all these comments made me call couple of friends who have applied under EWS to ascertain..when I asked them if certificates were too difficult to be procured, both said they had submitted certificates, and believe most would have too, their logic- "yaar upsc mein kyu koi chance miss karega? Idhar Udhar Harr side jugaad krke submit kiye lekin time se pehle".
The other logic for low cutoff for ews that baaki exam me kam gya ka jawab na bhai mere paas hai na unke pas. Bas mujhe lagta hai upsc aur baki exam me zyada similarities nhi hongi.

P.S: haalat uss paragliding video fail wale ki see hogyi hai.
Mai MC hun jo isme aaya.?

@vvvikas0078212arey launde yahan sc/st ki cutoff pe pahocha de rhe. Matlab kya karu? Baap se bolu ghar bech dein, agle attempt se pehle??

@dancingminion

Exam ki difficulty ka level shayad ab kam lage when we have read solutions to them.

Asli assessment iss cheez ko dhyaan mein rakhkar hogi ki just after taking the exam, what were our thoughts.

What's your take on this ?

@Biryanimafia_ 1058 candidates qualified under EWS category. 354 didn't have EWS certificate dated before the cut off date and they are being treated as General category candidates now. So, there are around 700 candidates under EWS. Lesser the number, there's greater likelihood of cutoff being low.

So, I guess logically it makes sense. The cutoff could well below the OBC cutoff.

@Biryanimafia_ It's authentic. It's from the ongoing proceedings in the CAT regarding EWS issue. UPSC itself has mentioned the numbers.

@dancingminioni dont know if my answer helps you. I'll just share my experience. Before plunging into UPSC, i had 1.5 years experience in JP Morgan. And then followed by 3 failures n hence 3 years gap. Didn't want to risk losing backup career also n hence decided to get back to IT. Started applying for jobs and very few companies responded n that too they were startups/semi-MNCs which i didn't want to join as I wanted time to study again for CSE. Fortunately i got offers from 2 very good MNCs in 2.5 months. JP Morgan again n Oracle. Worked in Oracle for 1.5 years again before quitting after prelims this year as management didn't agree for 3 months leave.

What worked for me?

Referrals : very very few interviews got scheduled through consultants. College friends, my colleagues who were 10years experienced helped me get an interview opportunity and all i wanted was that. I had faith in my tech skills.

My answer to gap: i wanted to follow my passion and if not by 25 i couldn't have done it ever. And now I'm done with cse, i want to start my career in IT. I even told to few that I'm 26 so don't want to mess-up with my career anymore?

Few things that struck them in my resume (i think so):

  • Hail from #1 regional engineering college in Karnataka ( not iit/nit). So most managers were aware of the college name as i was searching in Bangalore only.
National level tech paper published. An exciting mobile app developed way back in 2011 when there was no Android in India. Tech challenge winner certificate. And some interesting projects.

My suggestion:

Please save your interviews referred by your friends to the end. Until then Attend every interview shortlisted even if it's a startup, you can always refuse joining it if uninterested. Because You'll get to know the questions trend in the market. After you prepare for variety of questions, attend interviews arranged through referrals.

Prepare with utmost seriousness. Remember they are not fools to hire someone who has gap. So you have to prove yourself that you are competent enough even to the day. i was stunned to see JP Moragn drilling me for 6 rounds + HR round for its own ex- employee before selecting me.
Be mentally ready that hunting jobs in IT takes 3-5 months.

Good luck!

@AzadHindFauz700 candidates for around 90 seats is still not that easy at mains level. EWS cutoff will be closer to Gen only, max 15 marks margin.

@vvvikas0078212Could be. No experience here. Just wanted to put out the information on EWS.

@AzadHindFauzbuddy i'm not doubting the number, just want to be double sure. Eitherway, could you share the case number/name/date if you know. I have collegues practicing in CAT, will confirm myself.
