I would like to highlight two things.
1. This should not be surprising. Such instances have been observed several times in the past as well. For example, Williams sisters lost to a 200+ ranked man with a score of 6-0,6-1 or something similar. In physical sports, a top tier male athlete will have a significant advantage over a top tier female athlete.
2. More important is the context in which such articles are used. These examples are often used to disparage female athletes and used as a common rebuttal to their demands of fair treatment. This is frankly ridiculous as there is no reason for using their performance against men as a barometer for how female athletes are going to be treated.
Point to be noted: Fair treatment is not just about salaries and the argument should not be reduced to that only . Given the commercial nature of sports, it is understandable that salaries can't be same. Ronaldo earns more than DDG despite being in the same team. Kohli is in a higher pay bracket than Umesh Yadav and so on.
