Anyone with history optional? What is the general opinion? While the paper, I know, can’t exactly be called difficult, it wasn’t very straightforward either, right? The first paper ? Good standard of questions, in my opinion.

I think the history paper was one of the easier ones in recent times. Gives advantage to first timers to score better as compared to when tough paper comes which relatively gives the old timers a better chance to score.

@Sopranos I’m a first timer only so can’t exactly comment on its relative difficulty.  Because all the past year papers seem easy while seating at home 😅

there wasn’t any question that I went blank on, in both the papers.  But by not easy I mean, the questions weren’t straightforward and it won’t be easy to score good. For example, they asked ‘stages of feudalism’ ; varna-Samkara; one should have REALLY REALLY studied well to answer well.

If you didn't go blank that itself shows paper was easy unlike in years when UPSC had asked really obscure topics like Lekhapadhati, Malfuzat etc. So that's why say, most of the paper was doable, it was easy this year.

In previous years history optional QP,

How many map questions did you get correct as per coaching keys?

What i gather is many have got atleast 13-14 sites in map correct. If we leave 1 site which was marked wrong. The. This year map qs seems pretty easy

@RaGa any idea, why they put a political map for one year and then back to physical the next? Taking randomness to the next level

@Duryodhan Sorry , I understand the feeling. Today was the first time I went to back the Mains papers after January 17th. That too only because people here were guessing their marks, which made me anxious.

Bhai must have been that they had less time to transfer to boundariless map before printing in 2020, else everytime it has been like this year only.

I believe paper 1 was the most straight forward of recent times. Usually they ask obscure culture and sources questions for medieval (lekhapaddhati? Sabhasad bakhar? Chaurapanchashikha paintings?), but this time all medieval questions were direct, and that was a relief. Ancient was as usual (indirect and analytical), but one question could be answered from there without any issues (and rest three from medieval).

Second paper was of the usual variety (I prefer/like the second paper, but many say it's the more difficult of the two).

Paper 1 medieval part makes the difference this time, I think, and hence paper was on the easier side compared to previous years.

My only previous mains was the 2016 one and I messed up the map questions. So didn't even check the answers since I knew there's no point.

What are your opinion on the latest string of allegations on UPSC faculties like Vision's Smriti Ma'am on spreading anti-Hindu propaganda and all?

Till 2019, every year it was a plain map, only in 2020 they made a change. Don't know why they did so and why they decided to go back to the older method in 2021 (may be the son/daughter of someone influential had a mini heart attack due to that in 2020 and complaint reached the higher ups😅).
