Sir@Neyawn can you please share why were some candidates awarded negative marks by UPSC in mains? Thank You.

That was last year. This kid had got 25 negative marks . UPSC has released a document on it . Like writing in margins or identifying yourself in the paper ( such as your name, religious identity etc )

It is posted somewhere in the blog.  I will try to look it up today evening.

It was unprecedented. I came to know because one forum member called me saying her colleague in police - it was  her daughter who had  been given 25 marks less and could not make it to final list because of it.

This year, I met the candidate. She was like Sir, I am that unlucky person . When the results came for this year, She had secured Rank 30!

i was preparing for bank exams gave 1 interview but did not get selected. then thid corona pandemic came. i used to apply for upsc every year but wanted to prepare after some job in govt banks. but this pandemic gave me an opportunity to fulfill my dreams.

heartly congratulations to all rank holders..i have following questions

1. do upsc interviews is biased with someone with experience in job? i have a very weak profile without any achievement till now

2. i heavely rely on coaching pdfs and taken insights prelims test series. i follow editorials only. as i have to revise a lot i dont read newspapers bkoz word limit is just 150 or 250. so is my strategy right?

3. i am making very crisp notes of limited pdf n magazines but doing nothing with newspapers..i cant remeber so much frm newspaper rather i am following insight n vision ..i have planned to cover secure of past 2 years with concise notes..m i doing right?

Can toppers please share how much they used to score in mains test series(say Vision), especially between prelims and mains. If you made any excel sheet like some of us do for prelims for tracking progress, it would be very beneficial if you could please share it. Like Kanishak last year shared his scores of test series and how his GS1 & GS2, but not GS4, got reflected in the final UPSC Score. Thank You

@rashiv Revised my sources for general studies and optional according to weightage, wrote 2-3 answers every single day and didn't wait to write a full length test paper once a week, my sources for mains and pre for general studies were the same which benefitted in revision.

@rashiv Was working prior to prelims results so couldn't devote much time especially with the backlog at work after prelims preparatory leave.

@thistooshallpass I simply focused on finishing subjects weightage wise from rankers notes. And referring to previous year questions. Don't make it vast, you won't be able to finish everything satisfactorily.

@Neyawn Thank you sir. Feels like God has bestowed his blessings on me with my baby girl and rank both at the same time. 😄😄 Though I'll be giving another attempt to improve my rank.

@pmaheshthilak785 Refer to rankers material and previous year question papers. R S Agarwal Sir is extremely good with the optional.

Haha,

Many many congrats on your  newborn :)

You know what, you were there when@HAZE  / Minal was around. You probably must have seen her. Or recognise her from the videos.

So there was this kid who was also writing SFGs back then. She hadn’t cleared Prelims before and was very excited when she finally did. She was regular at Answer Writing Focus Group for Mains as well . When finally results came, she got IRS while some people from the same classes got IAS.

So this kid one day comes to me with her Dad. She says - Sir, I wanted IRS and I got it but “she” got 30s rank and we were in the same class. I don’t want IAS actually but want to get a under 50 rank. I am now confident I can do it.

And her Dad was like - Samjhaye isko, Achha khasa set ho gayi her, still wants to write the exam again .

Not wanting to preach here, you must write the exam if you will, but remember that what you have now itself is going to be extremely satisfying  :) - at least from a 7-8 year perspective of people who are in all these services. Take an attempt, but don’t push yourself too much :)

@Neyawn I got your point sir. I am extremely happy and feel blessed to have got this rank especially while I was working and pregnant at the same time. However, it's not just for the sake of improving my rank. I left my job at Goldman Sachs to become an IFS officer and that is my first preference. So, if I still have an attempt left, I would like to give my best one more time.. For the satisfaction that I tried my best while I could. Though with the background in finance and being an MBA, I would be happy and fulfilled in IRS also. No pressure, just giving my best and staying happy about it :)

Why is everyone saying “not a great rank” ?

I just spoke to Anupama, the PMCH doctor , also a mother and has Rank 90, said the same :(

And this is with people making it to the list the first time :)

Stay chill, leave your job now, and come and see me in Gurgaon ,@capricornape

We”ll do at least a Diet Coke party :)

I told so many people about you that his time has come :P . About you and@Kira0705  Honestly, not because you were my students , but because you were active here and people should know that normal folks with jobs make it to the list.

From the online virtual mock interview group that we had, Ahinsa has gotten selected , Ayushi has I think rank  41 Jeydev has got Rank 5. The Jharkhand guys also, two of them got selected . It has been smooth , isn’t it ?

Just think of the situation 5 days back :P

Are you at work right now ?

Thanks sir. Not yet resigned but not working too :)

@pnarayan058351 - Congratulations ma'am,
@Neyawn - Sir, Any of your students cleared while working?

H
i,
i was giving upsc from 2017 leaving job.Cleared pre 3 times, went to interview once in 2018,but couldn't clear mains in 2019.

i felt dejected and panicked right after 2019 mains result and took up a private job .

For everyone who cleared with job, Can you pls provide few suggestion for working aspirants, like how you managed time in a day, leaves and all. it will be really helpful for people who cant afford to prepare full time.

Thank you

@Valar_morghulis Thanks. I was working while preparing. Few things I did - Used commute time for newspaper, lunch time for current affairs, came back home and straight away sat down to study for 3 hours. Used Saturday and Sunday efficiently by going to the library for 9 am to 9 pm. Tried to be anti social.. So no festivals marriages friend gatherings etc. Take leaves to make extended weekends for studies. Also, limited sources helped.
