Mains 2019 Preparation and Discussion Thread
Now that 1 week is over, it is time to shift focus to Mains. With barely 103 days left there is no time to waste.

he got rank 5 in 2014 in 5 th attempt
aisi journey thi bhai uski 1 st attempt audit second attempt piche rank third attemp supplementary list 4 th attempt irs
kitna patience chahiye isi se pta chaltahai puri jawani to sala isi me khtm hojati hai

@Valar_morghulisif you are travelling alone you can stay at zostel and can meet other fellow travellers from around the world. also if you want to stay in hotel bargain for 30-40% off as this is off season
do go for adventure sports , though I guess rafting would be closed at this point but bungee jumping wgrh would be going on . dont prebook , it would off season so go and bargain
dont eat at chotiwala its not worth the price instead try buddha's cafe and one or two caffe's nearby

I have lot of plans for my life post upsc like doing phd in sociology,masters from harvard etc. so I will be happy with a decent rank and won't waste my entire life for this so called dream job i.e ias(which it is'nt).
Wasting almost 7-8 years for a single exam I believe is'nt worth IMO.
Baaki sab ki apni priority hoti hai life main.Kuch ko life ka 16% hissa isi exam mein bita dina hai aur kuch ko life mein aur bhi bahur kuch karna hai..
That's why I believe upsc has started making papers like mains 2019 where toppers and repeater fundas like answer writing,mock tests,doing current affairs won't work as upsc has also realized that people are giving exam again and again and wish to make a level playing field........
@Valar_morghulisapart from what Kira said, it's the best place to have some Shivji Ka prasad
. Also, do watch Ganga Aarti. It's very soothing and tends to give some sort of inner satisfaction. Do stay in a hostel and try to strike up conversations with foreign tourists. Baaki 2 din bahut kam Hain.
Solo trip there should be of 7-10 days. Also depends on what you are going there for. For me, a solo trip to Rishikesh would certainly be a spiritual journey of sorts.
@kochikaameFor me its just some useful distraction. Due to this unending wait..confusion is creeping in. Plus most of my friends who gave mains are preparing for their state PSC's and i'm wasting time. DAF mein tho traveling ek hobby likha..par bot din hua travel karke. Moreover dont wish to spend end of the decade in ORN. Want to start the year somewhere more positive.
@Valar_morghulisIt is a good idea. This year, in January, I ran a marathon. It was freezing cold and early in the morning at 6. Purpose was only to finish that marathon no matter what. Since it was going to be my 5th attempt I sort of needed that feeling of finishing a task that I started and that set me up nicely for the whole year. Travelling and adventure sports are similar. You'll return with an even greater zeal.
We are still, what we learn in political science, a prismatic society. A society where tradition and modernity coalesce to produce modernisation of tradition. So we witness such ascriptive identities as caste, gender or religion providing the basis for our modern polity. And the consequence is their politicisation.
This traditional way of making the world meaningful through those identities has not only been institutionalised but is pervasive in our attitudes too. Our mind has still not forgotten the habit of deducing from who people are by birth to what they are worth. As a result, our society is a status society, still a feudal one.
And in any such society where modernity is still nascent, where law is not impersonal but is often bent to personal ends, where the force of the state can be commandeered by those etched in the state machinery — there emerges a nobility of the powerful. This nobility is the very law unto itself in an otherwise lawless land. It presides over the fate of many, acting as a putative god.
It’s then the desire to become a member of this nobility, to not become a potential victim of anarchy, to become powerful in a power-driven society, which explains why many of our families want us to get into the services. It’s the reason why although UPSC is just an examination, clearing it is considered a victory over fate.
It’s all in the reward which passing this examination accrues, that makes the endeavor worthwhile.

While one is in the UPSC journey, one may begin to think it is a larger-than-life kind of a thing. As long as this state of hypnosis drives one to study efficaciously so much the better. Yet, one must remember that it is only slightly more than an examination and importantly by any means how you fare in it is not a measure of your self-worth no matter what pressures the Indian society generates on you. As, Jean Paul Sartre said,'Others are Hell'.
Also, Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, it would please you to know couldn't crack the IIT yet he went on to bag the Nobel for having developed X-Ray crytallography methods to probe the structure of the ribosome.
Similarly, Linus Pauling the double Nobel Laureate was critical of Dan Shechtman reprimanding him that there are no quasi-crystals, only quasi-scientists. The entire Israeli scientific establishment sidelined Shechtman owing to his tangential approaches for many decades but he kept at his research ultimately getting the Nobel prize in Chemistry 2011. So, one must always listen to one'e inner voice and be at work to fructify one's passions.

Kbhi miloge to btayenge.Yha words m exactly samjha nhi payenge tau. Aap apne first or last serious attempt m nikal jao yhi dua h. BUT do have a respectful heart for those who toiled hard to stay in this painful process for years. Not all are fools. Sab yhi soch k aate h ki 1st attempt only wrna I will shift the way. This exam is AFEEM. Chakh liya to fir yaa to 1st choice service leke nikloge ya fir UPSC khud laat maar k nikalegi. But still Dil se Best wishes for u
