@Darvey78 real marks are many a times way different than our expectations... u will see plenty of people saying after the exam smiling that they managed to finish the paper...made diagrams...structure...presentation etc etc.. But when they see their results obviously most of them could not even clear mains...happened with me too... even quora is full of these experiences...i suggest you to read some answers on people's upsc mains experience on quora, they have testified it... i feel those who work hard are more likely to clear, but their is a lot of subjectivity in the checking process... u can never be sure about anything.. coz even the other way round is true.. many times people who were hopeless and ready to give next attempt made it to top ranks.

@rockhard  Its true- People who are smartly working hard are more likely to clear, given they have written 'Above average & insightful answers consistently'  on exam day and whose answers were then checked by a reasonable examiner.

Also if anyone is in reserved category then its an added advantage (must be taken if one can). Most of repeaters like me in General category are those who are neither excessively talented, neither excessively lucky and nor have any quota to back us to fulfill above lackings (personal observation 🙂)

@Capedcrusader1 Thats somewhat true. And even most of my selected friends say that this exam is test of ' Consistent mediocrity'  which BRINGS IN subjectivity and luck into play.

But like a bell curve, despite concentration in middle there will always few who are exceptional in someways. I observed that few times like while going through essay copies of  Vikram Grewal, IFS.

Iss exam mai expect bhi kya kar sakte hai bro?
  • Some toppers claim that they got a good rank after bluffing some facts/reports (Siddarth Jain).
  • Some toppers claim that bluffing in answers is harmful (Ira Singhal).
  • If your handwriting is illegible but content is good then still you will get low marks.
  • Also, sometimes we can mistakenly quote a wrong fact/statement (afterall we all are humans). Ex: I remember analysing Shruti Sharma's mock test copy in which she wrote that Nehru Report was formulated in response to "Montague's Challenge" but actually, it was the "Birkenhead Challenge" (1927). Unka toh history optional tha and still she committed this small mistake. Apart from that structure wagera and all other points were good.
  • Bad performance in optional bhi ek factor ho sakta hai even after good performance in GS for not clearing Mains.
Therefore, there are so many factors at play that we can't conclusively point out one factor that was instrumental in passing/failing Mains.
Prelims mai toh samajh bhi aa jaata hai not Mains.
Issliye toh just wait for UPSC to declare Mains ka result, abhi marks estimate karke kuch nahi hoga. Kuch bhi ho sakta hai- Less attempt karne waale pass ho sakte hai. Full paper attempt karne waale fail ho sakte hai. Basically, anything what UPSC wants. And the gold question- What does UPSC exactly want? - we do not know. Everyone is just guessing.

Coaching waale toh apne interview programme mai zyada registrations ke liye false hopes toh de denge. Unka kya hai.. aage jaa ke chup chap answers change kar denge site pe then they'll blame the student for not reading xyz compilation of abc month.

I will be back!

And worst part of this exam is, we compare our writing standards with toppers copies.  But Hume general masses ki copies na milti to know... Ki hamari is sal awkad kya hai .

U can see many coaching uploads not checked copies... Kyuki har answer me khami nikalni hai coachings ko..

Aur maine ye bhi suna hai...kai cases me copies baadme likhi jati hai.. once topper is bought.

After prelims, every thing is as transperant as turbid water.

I believe we learn from both best practices and worst practices. Worst practices hame sikhati hai ki kya nahi karna h...coaching should disclose all copies of aspirants who attempted mains TS.

Glad someone is thinking of economics as an optional.
There are coaching institutions which provides economics ; the two prominent one are
1. Next ias under Vibhas Jha sir
2. Bliss point under Ravinder Jha sir

Before joining u should book a sitting with both of them and see whom u connect well as in economics optional everything boils down to pyq which rarely anyone help u to solve .

Excuse if I am being naive, but is economics optional doable if I have no economics background? Out of the entire GS syllabus, economics is my favourite part (closely followed by geography) but I have an engineering background (current optional - anthro).

@iceblock Paper 1 is the technical part, you'll have to work on it a bit extra. Paper 2 has a huge overlap with GS 3 so that helps. Toppers Blogs and their notes are available. Test series is bit of an issue, however PYQs are more helpful anyway. If you have genuine interest, then I don't think it'll be a problem.

In your specific case, you must attend some Paper 1 classes. Maybe take Unacademy optional 1 month subscription before committing to it. Yes there are overlaps but the places where overlaps aren't there (Paper 1), can land you in a soup later, and you won't be able to opt out in case you pay full optional fee somewhere. This is a make or break decision, take it rationally. DM me if you want some videos or something. Good luck!

Disclaimer: I studied Eco optional for 2 months and have a working knowledge of economics (and I don't mean Economy GS).

There is a section in DAF about Prizes , Medals and Scholarships. Experienced people please guide if the events from school are also included here or just the university level ones?

@Darvey78 You can write it but it is advisable to put things that are recent. Basically agar kaafi time ho gaya hai graduation karke aur job nahi kar rahe ho toh phir dal dena. If you are doing other things or are working then school ke things can avoid as already lot of things would be there to interact on

@iceblock believe me economics optional and gs are all total a different ball game; and in this optional u will hardly find anyone who could check ur copy and most importantly solve the pyq , so it is better to hedge ur options and go with the optional u have chosen as it is new to all and will keep u at equal footing.
