Jitna pressure lena hai result aane ke baad le lenge kyunki tab tak sab kuch definite ho jayega.

Lol dude, it feels like you know something that the rest of us don’t know after today’s notice! 

It's not the topic which decides something is easy or difficult. It's the way, a question is framed, which makes things easy or difficult. So, while topics like society may feel like we don't even need to put so much efforts, it's actually the other way around. If you have segregated the questions topic-wise for every topic under that falls under "Society" in the mains syllabus, you would have realized the fact that it is impossible to predict anything and that you have to be prepared to answer these things effectively without having any kind of specialized knowledge.

I just prepare the basics of the topics mentioned in the syllabus and read the topics in news from vision magazine (because everyone else reads it, and if i skip it, i will be at a disadvantage with respect to others). The point here is that, I do the basics just like everyone does.

But additionally, I prepare myself mentally to deal with questions, that I may have never come across before. My plan of doing that is through

1) Basic definitions

2) Some kind of data to substantiate my arguments

3) Breaking the parts in the question and using PESTLE like things to link it to different dimensions

4) writing very civil servant like arguments by suppressing my biases (like being solution oriented, optimistic, compassionate, emotionally intelligent etc). I may not be this person in real life as I'm a person with million flaws, but i do have a fair idea of my flaws and make sure that i mask these flaws accordingly in my answer to give the evaluator what he may want to read.

I just do this and cook up an answer that seems almost acceptable. I won't score the highest, but I will score average marks per question with this approach, and ultimately that is what is needed.

Summary: Just prepare with same resources like everyone else does, so that you don't be at an disadvantage by skipping any standard resource. But, the key to dealing with such questions, lies in your mental preparation for such unheard or unknown or unprepared type of questions.

Please find your own personal way of  dealing the unknown type of questions in both prelims and mains, you'll find it very beneficial to score good marks.

This is what I've learnt from my failures and this is what i can humbly and personally suggest you.

Five things could be tried:

1. Pray that you clear with a decent margin. Better to clear with a 40-80 mark margin at least than to clear at all.

2. Figure out 2-3  hour long videos on youtube that you always wanted to watch and watch those, will get something off your to-do list. For example, some marathon on a subject that you studied some time back or an essay paper analysis that's there in everyone's watchlist. Did this essay thing in CSM21 and helped in CSM22.

3. Take some time to meet friends on the morning and afternoon of 25th and 26th. The result comes out in the afternoon 3-5pm and the folks who turn up at UPSC premises share a "Notice board cleaning picture" 2 hours before the pdf is out, so you will know well in advance don't worry sitting on browser and pressing F5. Under this, try to come back home by 5pm anyway and make use of the evening. 

4. Revise post independence India. I know sounds weird but somehow that subject does make me forget other stuff going around me.

5. If nothing else interests you, this thread would be buzzing with activity starting 9-10am so let's just sit together and read relevant memes that start coming in. Maybe get some popcorn and coke and use that Netflix subscription alongside?

Result should be immaterial. In reality it is NOT as the society is used to shunning away those who’ll fail. Most likely, the coaching/the peers will simply move the focus on those who’ll pass the Mains. A lot of us might receive apathy. People will make you feel that you didn’t work hard enough EVEN WHEN YOU DID ALL YOU COULD. There might be people who would’ve fallen ill and yet given their heart & soul. It’s time, we all initiate change & respect even those who didn’t make it. It’s time, we actually begin appreciating efforts and not just results. If Nishkama karma is taught by all UPSC coaches & teachers, then it’s time we celebrate the Nishkama karma Yogis & not just those who’ll make into the final list.

I just want all my peers to know that this guy behind the username of GaneshGaitonde is extremely proud of all of us. The intensity, the sacrifice & the madness that we all showed for the Mains while fighting numerous personal battles deserves nothing less than a salute 🙂. We all know what a mad battle mains is , Right ? At least, we must appreciate each other for setting an ambitious goal in life & working day in and day out to achieve it !
