[Results] Prelims 2020 Over - Gearing for 2021

Because of the corona virus issue? If it does not happen then worst affected will be people whose interview is stuck, around 600-700 such people I think are yet to appear for their interview.

@neyawn sir and others, what is your take?

This is the official Thread for discussion of Prelims Postponement, Please do not create new threads for the same.

Out.

Was getting 104.5 minimum. Kept all controversial questions negative.

Checked CSAT just to make sure. Using Vision IAS key for CSAT I am getting 75.

Can anyone help me decide what is happening? Is the cutoff more than 105?

Nahi bro. U r done be csat.

@Great_Indian_Custard no 96-98 is the cut off

Impossible. I know quite a lot of people in early 100s who missed out.

Last time i commented on Forum site was 2017, it was my 3rd attempt, but first mains. 2016 i scored 114 nd csat 65.8. by 3rd attempt i was soo stressed that i absolutely wrecked my mains even though got amazing essay marks (149, without even writing a single essay before), just didnt knw back then how to even finish papers. took 2018 off, prepared notes of each nd every topic of mains. Today i have got notes by which i can finish my optional in max 4 days. nd whole GS in a week tops. 2019 i gave exam- score 94, csat 65 something.

went for vipassana, changed whole life. for this attempt read romila thapar(from which max ques asked) nd shekhar bandyopadhya, apart from having notes of whole spectrum, geo, culture, env, nd what not- score 123 nd paper 2- 65.8 (vision key). this was my fifth attempt. was just itching that kismat ek mains likhwa de aur, i want to show what i have got, how well i can write. and now this. THis time i was sooo sure abt my score i didnt even check my paper, nd i knew ke forest ka bhi clear hoga cutoff.

After 5th attempt, i am soo tired of reading all the boring stuff again, dnt even know where to go. I have a law degree, can start practising, but feels like this years nd years of failing at margins (for last 12 years atleast), i cnt even gather strength to think what kind of signal this is. Nobody ever told me, ever that i cnt clear.  at such a monumental loss of words

Hang in there! It's a tough situation to be in. Take some time off. Try joining a chamber practice. Get some real world experience. It will be a nice change. And try again harder next time. Take care

This was my last attempt and I am finally out!!
Here is some gyan for my younger friends:
  • This preparation is no joke. Once you entered seriously, use all your might to clear. Don't enter until you are fully "ready" (it is a comprehensive term which includes your socio-economic conditions, your willingness, mindset, understanding of the exam and level of competitiveness etc.)
  • Confidence and stable mindset are two most important keys to clear this examination. Situational awareness in exam hall would assist you to clear more than anything you can think of.
  • Prelims is a misnomer term. Better if you treat as a stage of Mains itself. The attitude of treating it Prelims as "discount" would cost you dearly.
  • Prior to three months of prelims, forget completely about Mains. Prepare GS and CSAT paper substantially.
  • "Move from one failure to another without loosing enthusiasm is what called success" is rather easy to preach than practice. Winston Churchill must be drunk that night when he wrote this line.
  • Unemployed fellows or persons who have seen recent setbacks in whatever exams ( it may be GATE, IES, IITJAM or even JEE) don't just jump into UPSC thinking it as something which will bury your past failures once and for all. Be practical. Appear in some relatively easy examinations which serves your purpose in varying degrees. Garner confidence and mental strength required for this examination from these minor successes.
  • Don't have a team of cheerleaders. "Bhai tu IAS nikal, mujhe ek IAS ( you being his close friend) ko gali deni hai" like people should be avoided altogether.
  • Optional should be easy going. Don't see marks of others and choose one. It should be completely based on your interests. Period.
  • Revision. Revision and Revision. Few resources, frequent revisions.

I hope this helps. Life doesn't end with an examination. Certainly, this was a golden opportunity which I lost but then again I am hopeful I will be getting many. And the oil I burned during UPSC prep. wont go in vain entirely.

Till then, good luck fellas!

Machete raho!

I think people should realise that just because someone got 105 or 110 from a key, it doesn’t mean that the cutoff is above that number.

It’s equally, if not more, probable that the keys themselves were incorrect. And wrong answers in 3 questions means 8 marks.

So please refrain from doing this. It only creates more fear in those who failed.
