PRELIMS FACTS DRILL: Because UP-PSC Current Affairs Needs a Different Approach
If you are preparing for UP-PSC, chances are you have either asked this question yourself or heard someone ask it.
The answer is: Yes, you need a different approach. Not necessarily a completely different set of information. But definitely a different way of preparing for it.
Because UPSC and UP-PSC don’t test current affairs in exactly the same manner.
The UPSC–UPPSC Current Affairs Trap
Suppose you are preparing for UPSC. You read about a new government scheme.
You understand:
- Why was it launched?
- What is its objective?
- What problem does it address?
- What are its challenges?
- What are its broader implications?
Excellent. That’s exactly how you should prepare for an analytical examination like UPSC.
But UP-PSC Prelims may ask:
Who launched the scheme?
Which ministry is associated with it?
When was it launched?
Which state/region is associated with it?
Which of the following statements about the scheme is correct?
See the difference?
Same current affair. Different examination demand.
So, if you think:
Think again.
You may have covered the topic. But have you prepared it in the UPPSC Prelims way?
This is another very common strategy.
Sounds like a plan. Until that yearly compilation actually arrives. You now have hundreds of pages to cover. And barely a month left for Prelims.
And then begins the familiar cycle:
Read → Highlight → Turn pages → Read → Highlight → Panic → Repeat.
And after spending days reading the compilation, you realise:
That’s the problem. The issue isn’t that you didn’t work hard. The issue is that passive reading is not enough for Prelims.Prelims demands recall.
The Bigger Problem: Information Overload
There is another trap. Most yearly compilations try to cover everything. And that sounds great.
But stop and think. Do you really need to remember everything?
No.
Not every piece of information deserves equal attention. Some facts have a clear possibility of becoming a Prelims question. Some are useful but secondary. And some information is simply not worth spending your precious revision time on.
The real skill is knowing:
This is where smart work becomes more important than simply working harder.
So, What Is the Solution?
Introducing UPPSC PRELIMS FACTS DRILL
A monthly current affairs magazine designed specifically with UP-PSC Prelims in mind.
The philosophy is simple:
Don’t just read current affairs. DRILL the facts.
Fact Drill converts important current affairs into a Question–Answer format. Instead of passively reading:
“XYZ scheme was launched by the Ministry of…”
You encounter:
- XYZ scheme was launched by which Ministry?
Now you have to think.
You have to recall.
You have to retrieve the information from your memory.
And that’s what makes the difference.
Why Question–Answer Format?
Because there is a huge difference between:
“I have seen this fact.”
and
“I can recall this fact.”
Prelims doesn’t ask whether you have seen the information before. It asks whether you can identify the correct answer when it matters. Fact Drill makes your preparation more active. You don’t simply consume information. You interact with it.
And at the same time, you start developing a very important skill:
That is exactly the mindset we want you to develop.
What Makes PRELIMS FACTS DRILL Different?
- UPPSC-focused filtering
The purpose is to prepare for the examination. Facts Drill focuses on information that matters from the UP-PSC Prelims perspective.
Less noise. More relevance.
- Active learning
Question–Answer format forces you to recall.
Read → Think → Recall → Learn.
Instead of:
Read → Turn page → Forget.
Because:
- Learn how questions can be framed
Knowing a fact is one thing. Knowing how an examiner can test that fact is another. Facts Drill helps you develop that examination perspective.
- Save your revision time
Instead of spending hours filtering through hundreds of pages:
Focus on what matters.
- Built for repeated revision
Fact Drill’s format makes repeated revision much easier.
Because ultimately:
The Facts Drill Philosophy
On the day of the examination, you don’t want to think:
You want to look at the question and think:
And that’s the whole idea behind Facts Drill.
