Generally, to get 290-300 in the optional, is it possible to do so if you haven't been able to finish either optional paper? Put it another way, among the candidates who make the list, does everyone finish the optional papers or do they end up leaving some questions? If so, roughly how many marks do they leave unattempted?

Just a general query, not specific to any optional. But wondering about subjects like PubAd, PSIR, Socio etc (ie non-technical subjects like Maths or even high scoring humanities subjects like Anthro).

@bigboyif one is leaving questions then is content in other questions must b good to score above 300. My content was average in anthropology and I left questions of around 60-70marks. I got 253. If I would have been able to write just average content in these questions, then my score would have been b/e 280-290.

Aksht jain in one session told that he left one 20 mrker in paper1 bt still got 171. So leaving question is only accpetable if content in others questions are extremely good

@bevancomit's true. If you want to clear UPSC you have to cut off from the world. It's irrelevant whether you join a coaching institute or not.i know people who come to Delhi from far away and don't even get to see their family for months(for few,it can also be years). Even I prepared on my own, while staying at home. And like you I'm from a decent engg college (If DTU can be called decent), and that's the reason why people like us can think about preparing on our own for this exam. At the same time, there are many who didn't receive this privilege.i've seem notes from coaching institutes, and I'm sure no-one can clear UPSC,by following them.its totally useless, yet important to bring people who didn't go to fancy colleges at par with the level UPSC expects.
This exam requires hard and smart work both, no one can do it without either.and yet there are many who do it all and yet fail to cross the final barrier. By your conviction, I'm sure you've worked hard, like so many of us, and there are many who have to boast in or ridicule others at this platform to feed their ego. But value your hardwork more than what such people say .We are all literally on the edge as the D-DAY approaches. I only wish we can be supportive of each other and don't belittle others.
In words of Tywin Lannister, jugglers and singers require applause, you are a Lannister. Agar hum mehnat krte hai, to wo is exam ko clear krne k liye hoti h.kisi ko neecha dikhaane ya applause lene k liye nhi.
Also I'm addressing this to you because I can see you've been targeted unnecessarily, and that's because of your belief that you've worked harder than others, which in my opinion is disrespectful of the effort put in by those who haven't worked as hard as you. Baaki I love writing long essays too??

How an optional subject is butchered? Does they start setting tough question papers or they start giving less marks? Any aspirant with geography or pubad optional, please comment. My optional is anthropology. will they butcher it this time?

@ChanakyaRightly said.
Sabke saath accha hoga aur jiska nahi hoga uska agli baar aur acchi rank se hoga aur jiska jab bhi nahi hoga uske liye bhagwan ne aur kuch accha socha hoga(maybe they start a business and become owner of multi billion dollar empire in few years).
If anu kumari would have cleared pre in 2016 itself she would never had the time to study as well as she did and hence could have never got 2nd rank.

@zombielandthey don't give less marks arbitrarily just to butcher an optional. They deliberately set tough question paper whenever an optional becomes too popular, so that parity between optionals can be maintained. 2013 and 2015 geography and 2014 pub ad papers are a testimony to this.

@hirockyrocks7101so we can assume that anthropology will not be butchered as paper was not that difficult.

@zombielandno particular optional has been butchered since 2016 as far as I know. So only our performance decides whether we are going to get butchered or not.

@ChanakyaNah have'nt seen it..but yes people kept talking about it in both ug and pg..

@zombielandThey might apply some moderation formula to bring down the scores, I remember in 2017 pub ad guys were delighted with easy papers but it did not translate into high scores(very few 300+).

@Dijkstramtlb anthro ka lag sakta h..

@Dijkstrayes there must be moderation formula otherwise mathematics optional candidates will get above 400. but in humanities optional already marks are awarded less. There moderation will only bring disaster☹

@zombielandbutchering in the sense of Pub ad(2012) and Geography(2015) will not likely happen but 330+ scores might decline

Is anthropology going to be butchered? Or the tag of Scoring Optional will be retained this year too?
This comes in the backdrop of good number of aspirants writing mains with anthropology as corroborated by the data of Optional Polls conducted few days back!
