@atuljitbhi advice dete h k kuch back up optiona rakhna shi rehta h. technical degrees iss maamle main arts degree se behtar h. Job options jayada hote h. initial difficulties k baad uth k khada hona relatively easy rehta h.

phir bhi jinko confidence h unke liye kya hi backup. bt in general backup option rakhna shi hota h.

@atuljiessay and ethics have luck factor and optional has hardwork factor. If all 3 come together then selection is almost ensured given a decent personality and GS knowledge.

@VivekanandS2018 was my first prelims and it broke me so much that I couldn't study much for 3 months after that. However I realized clearing Pre for any serious aspirant depends the most on how calm he/she is while writing the exam. Keeping that thing into consideration helped me in 2019 prelims.

Exactly bhaai. I never understood why so many people think taking arts is better agar CivilS Karna ho to. Technical degrees always helps when it comes to jobs.

@kochikaameMedia has a big role in creating this mess. they promote toxic motivation. like jagran josh uploaded a video with caption "ias banne k liye ghar becha". i saw many candidates with poor family background were sharing this video. in this subjective exam how much it is worth to sell ur house.

second thing is 2years time is enough to complete'y prepare syllabus. there is no need to go for intermediate n graduation (arts) just for the sake of civil services. a guy with technical degree will also easily understand history or sociology.

@zombielandabsolutely true. Toxic motivation ends up harming most people.

Also as you said, one doesn't need to have the preparation mindset right from college days. I am from an engineering background and ended up preparing economics in about 5 months. Funny thing is that even an economics grad needs 3-4 months for it.

Many other optionals would take even lesser time than that.

@zombielandtrue as someone with a degree in social sciences I second this.
First thing, it’s not possible to study to multiple subjects in graduation - so no general studies taiyyar nahi hojayega.
Second thing, the only possible leverage which an arts graduations gets you is time - as its relatively lightweight - but then again most of us aren’t that foresighted to think from UPSC right after 12 with a few exceptions of people like Tina Dabi. If you just read Hindu for those 2-3 years and maybe NCERTs you are way ahead than the crowd - likely hood of qualifying in first attempt is immense.
I personally thought of it only in my last year of graduation (something I hugely regret).

Infact, I don’t think there is any other exam where people in general (those not preparing) are more clueless about what it actually demands. Matlab max junta ko lagta hai ki -
a) MA level study is required
b) UPSC asks questions from the books we read
To explain to them how UPSC itself has not prescribed any books, and how what all we read for this exams serves merely as a reference and guiding point to answer what the exam asks us is a tough task. It’s not school where there is a set textbook. And then add to that dozen other variables which determine the result.
