How to Optimise Prelims Preparation – Making the most of last few days + Strategy For the Last 45 Days

In about a month and a half, we have the Prelims Examination. Unlike the Mains, examination, which some people love to write, and the Interview, which most people love to prepare and appear for – the Prelims is almost the most hated exam level amongst all the three.

Everyone hates it ( with the exception of the person who is writing it the first time ) Рthe people who have made it to the list, but again need to qualify it if they want to upgrade their ranks, the people who just appeared for the Interview, but did not make it to the final list, the people who cleared Prelims last time, but didn’t clear Mains and are faced with Prelims again.

Almost everyone wants to write Mains . But one wants to write Prelims again, though ūüėõ

Because, it is also the exam, which makes us to go back to basics – read the same books again and again. And do the same current Affairs Magazine again and again.

Unlike the Mains, where everyone knows something about a question,  writes something and fills pages, and results take a really long time to come Рthe Prelims is a matter of you-either-know-it-or-don’t. There is no faking it.

Secondly, you almost know your results within a few hours of the exam, so if you are not scoring well, your comfort zone  ends just a few hours after the exam.

Again, unlike the Mains, where 100 out of 100 appearing candidates can claim that paper went fine, and yet only 20% will make it. But for the Prelims, you just know it. Right after writing a test. There are umpteen keys out there.

So here are a few things to keep in mind, which should make your journey for Prelims more productive, a little happier, stress-free and successful.

  1. Make the most of the Golden Hour. On a Daily basis.

And the golden hour starts ( and ends ) within the first hour of waking up. So the minute you wake up, do not get caught in the spiral of thoughts. Start studying within 30 minutes of getting up. A good idea would be to head to the washroom and come out having taken bath, all fresh and all ready to take the head on.

The point is, end procrastination before it takes over you. Nip it in the bud. And since Prelims exam does cause high stress ( compared to all other levels ) , its important to study – if not for the exam – for the confidence and for the need to feel good.

2. Do something tangible in the golden hour

The best thing to do when you wake up is to memorize things. You are fresh, the mind works best and you can quickly cover up a lot of things. And if you build a habit around it, you are all set for the Prelims Examination.

But if you are one of those who just open a book and stare at it until you sleep – try doing something tangible / measurable.

By which I mean, something that can be quantified. And seen. Having an end result. Like writing for an hour after waking up. ( How many pages did you write ? ) And seeing what you have written. The sweet smell of your cheap ball pen ink on fresh white paper. ( I use a 3 rupee pen ) Smells like heaven ūüôā

At the end of the hour, you have a few pages written, and you feel good about it. Its good for a start. What’s well begun is half done. Half is good. For now.

3. Leave nothing for the end. This is the end.

A lot of times, we leave things thinking of doing them in the end. A typical case is leaving current affairs for the end ( with the misplaced goal that I-will-cover-June-News-also-and-will-know-more-than-anyone-else )

There are two truths I want to tell you

(a) First, You cannot leave Current Affairs for the end. Nor even Modern History for the end

(b) Second, This is the end.

The truth is these last odd 50 days are the end days. The last 5 days or 10 days or 15 days are NOT the end. This isn’t college exam anymore.

4. There is still time

If you clock in at least 10-12 hours a day. And if you already know what to do. While clocking 10 hours a day looks like lot of hard work, the Prelims does require this kind of studies at least once, so that you build you level. The same amount of hard work may not be required for the Mains. Or the Interview.

By hard work, I mean the intensity of effort put in per hour. Lets face it. The Mains requires you to remember few key points, and build logical opinions around it. You do not have to remember things. If you don’t remember Point A, which is factual, you can always write Point B in its place.

But for the Prelims, you have to know Point A. And Point B. And Point C , if there is any. There is no escape. You must either memorize the Wetlands under Ramsar Convention or at least go through them between 3 -5 times to be able to answer a question based on them. Your opinions don’t matter. Facts do.

5. The 3 Days – 15 Cycles Strategy

We are about 45 days away from the Prelim. So here is the plan that you could opt for in the past few days. This is also what ForumIAS Co-Founder Lingraj Panda did in his subsequent attempt when he couldn’t clear Prelims the first time – Lock yourself and just study ( This doesn‚Äôt apply to people who are doing well and are in a comfort zone ; this is for people who are close to the border, and just need to race ahead in the last few days ). Lingraj, did clear Prelims that year, got IRS and then IAS with a rank 38, in case you wanted to know.

Here is the pic.

And as ugly the room, the books, or us, may look, this is how it is, and should be, when the going gets tough Рwhen you don’t feel like studying, or you feel under pressure.

So here is the thing. Keep a target of 3 Days – that makes up one cycle –¬† of finishing an entire subject – like Geography ( 2 books of NCERT ) , Environment ( Shankar IAS ), Polilty ( May take upto 2 cycles , since it‚Äôs a big book ) , Modern History ( Spectrum – 1 Cycle ) and try finishing it in three days.

And to beat the monotony, when you are bored of the static book, study current Affairs for 2-3 hours. Don’t be ambitious Рjust think of finishing maybe 20 pages of your current Affairs Magazine. So there you have a fair mix of Static and Current Affairs. And when you are tired and bored Рsolve 25 Questions of any coaching Test paper. If you are a little fresh, solve maybe 50 questions Рbut no more.

So here is the sum total. At all points of day, you aim to finish off 1 Static Book + 1 Current Affairs + 1 /4 to 1/2 Test paper every day. You can change the composition of the above mixture , say 1 Full Test Everyday – depending on your preparation level.

If you decide to finish one subject + 1 CA Magazine + 1 Test Paper in three days ( apart from the Test Series ), you should be able to have 15 such cycles of revisions.

And three days is a good time for a cycle. Even if you exceed, you will take maximum 5 days. On the other hand, if you keep a target of 5 days of 7 days for completing something, here is what happens

  • First, if you miss the target, you extend it to 7 days to 10 days – which is a lot of time .
  • Second, we all end tend to study in the end. ¬†Parkinson’s Law. So if you make a target of 7 days, you are likely to waste the first three days and study only from the 4rth day.
  • Third, if you decide to finish something in 3 days and merely finish 60%, you still have another cycle to complete the remaining 40%. And meeting 60% of your target is a good number even at this stage.

6. The ground rules for Cracking Prelims

Coming to few final ground rules for Prelims, especially when you are under prepared. And they are :

A)When choosing between solving  a paper vs studying, choose studying  ( unless you have really done each of the books five times  and have nothing left.)

B)When choosing between solving a previous year paper vs a Test paper, solve the previous year paper ( if you have not done it already )

C)When choosing between  a FREE ONLINE QUIZ and a solving a test series hard copy, solve a hard copy.

You can do 500 question in each paper in Mains ( subject to weightage of Current Affairs ) , and still clear Mains, but not so with the Prelims.

If you can’t clear Prelims based on your book reading, you can’t clear it by solving free MCQs all over the Internet. You will miss it by a few marks, even if you reach close. Missing the mark is missing it still. There is no glory in it. And that applies to almost all things in life.

7. Lastly, All Adversity is Opportunity.

If there is one thing I could tell you from the lessons of my own life, and having seen the struggle of a lot of people, who shine in knights armors, it is this. All adversity is opportunity. This exam has a glory. And the glory is only because the exam tests your perseverance, patience and ability to work under stress. And the ability to develop a strong will power in your journey.

If there is one thing that cracking the Prelims exam will teach you, is how to grow through adversity. For life.

So work hard, and feel free to post your queries and doubts here if you need help.

There is no other way,

Until Next Time

I had started preparation in 2012, where every tom, dick and harry was suggesting me a book for India Polity. Even book-shop owner itself had suggested me several books without checking my requirement, my background, my strengths or weaknesses. And what is resulted into ‚Äď I had following books for Indian Polity alone:

  1. Indian Polity by M. Laxmikanth
  2. Introduction to Constitution of India ‚Äď D.D. Basu
  3. Our Parliament ‚Äď Subhash Kashyap
  4. Bare Act ‚Äď P. M. Bakshi
  5. Indian Polity ‚Äď Spectrum
  6. Indian Constitution at Work ‚Äď NCERT

When we start preparation of UPSC, first thing that comes to our mind is which all books required for preparation.   And, then we start creating a library at home by keeping 5-6 books on each subject. But, we never try to analyse the demand of examination and we don’t study based on their expectations. This examination is not about compiling facts; it’s more scientific in nature. Strategic approach is the key to get success.

Therefore, I have tried to develop here an approach on how to prepare for Indian Polity for UPSC Examination. For that purpose, it is essential to know the essence of Indian Polity in examination. This analysis of Prelims paper indicates that UPSC has some favourite topics in Indian Polity, which keeps on repeating every time in prelims examination. Therefore, such topics should be prepared with full concentration to get an edge over other candidates. Those topics can be prepared from either books, but Laxmikant has provided it in detail, and it has established itself as authority. So, laxmikant alone would be sufficient to cover these topics.

Crux of Analysis of Previous Year Papers  on Indian Polity

  • Indian Parliament (Most important part of Indian Polity for Prelims) ‚Äď (Chapter of Laxmikant on Parliament is concise and sufficient)

There are always questions in prelims from Parliament which can revolve around Ministers, Council of Ministers, Prime Minister, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Parliamentary Terms, Parliamentary Committees, Parliamentary Privileges, Bills ‚Äď like finance bill, money bill. All these sections of Parliament make it the most important part of Indian Polity.

  • Constitutional and Non-Constitutional Body ‚Äď (ForumIAS article on constitutional and Non-Constitutional body is sufficient)

This is again one of the most favourite topics of UPSC in prelims, where questions are usually from Election Commission, CAG, Attorney General, Finance Commission, NITI Aayog, Human Rights Commission, Central Vigilance commission, Lokpal and Lokayuktas.

  • Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles of State Policy ‚Äď(Read Article 13 to Article 51A of Indian Constitution; Chapter 7, 8 and 9 of Laxmikant would be more than sufficient).

These are the most important articles of Indian Constitution where Civil Services prelims examination has always questions related to FR, DPSP and Fundamental Duties. There is mostly one question from fundamental duties in paper.

  • Historical Background and Making of Constitution (Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of Laxmikant)

Various Charter and Act of British Rule, eg. ‚Äď Govt of India Act, 1909, 1919 and 1935 are very important from prelims point of view. Apart from it, questions are being asked on Constituent Assembly regulary.

  • President/Governor ‚Äď (Chapter 17 and Chapter 26 of Laxmikant)

This is again a hot favourite topic of UPSC. Where functions of President or Governor are regularly asked. Therefore, Election of President, Qualification for President, Impeachment of President, Powers and Functions of President, Different types of Veto Power of President, Ordinance Making Power of President, Pardoning Power of President must be carefully read. Similarly, Power of Governor, comparative power of Governor with President must be prepared.

  • Indian Judiciary ‚Äď (Supreme Court and High Court) (Chapter 25 and Chapter 30 of Laxmikant)

Questions on Indian Judiciary are quite frequent in prelims paper. Therefore, following topics should be prepared in Indian Judiciary Chapter ‚Äď Appointment of Judges, Jurisdiction of Courts, Judicial Independence and Power of Judicial Review.

  • Centre-State Relations (Federal Structure) – (Chapter 14 of Laxmikant)

This is an important topic of Prelims as well as mains examination. Therefore, Legislative relations (Art. 246 to Art. 254 of Indian Constitution), Financial Relations (Especially Taxes levied by Centre and Taxes levied by state), distribution of revenues between centre and state should be prepared.

  • Union Territory and Special Areas – (Chapter 36 and Chapter 37 of Laxmikant)

Administration of Union Territories, Special Provisions for Delhi, Administration of Tribal Areas, Schedule 5 and Schedule 6 areas as per constitution)

  • Panchayati Raj and Municipalities (Chapter 34 and Chapter 35 of Laxmikant)

Important topics of Panchayati Raj are Evolution of Panchayati Raj, 73rd and 74th amendment of constitution, Salient Features of Panchayati Raj system, Functional items placed in Panchayati Raj system, Types of Urban bodies. These topics should be prepared comprehensively.

How to fill Service Preferences in DAF before Mains

VIKASH JINDAL (Rank 21: 2011)

Hi everybody, I got Rank 531 in CSE 2009 and then Rank 21 in CSE 2011. For two years, due to wrong service selection, I suffered a lot.

When You are in the Government Machinery, you come to know a lot of things about services other than IAS, IPS, IFS. So here is what I think:

  1. Accounting Services:
    1. Civil Accounts- Good exposure to Central Ministry, always stay in Delhi.
    2. Defence Accounts- Good infrastructure, good long term deputation opportunities,
    3. Railway Account- Good infrastructure, will become DRM as in IRTS.
    4. Postal and Telecom Accounts- must be one of last in the whole list (I got this in 2009)
  2. Audit and Account- good service, no interference, classy life, but lacks administrative powers
  3. IRTS- very good, IAS of railways, after IRS please put it.
  4. Indian Defence Estate Service- powers earlier than IAS, big house, red light from beginning. A very very good Service option. However, there is stagnation in long term
  5. ICLS- New service, but good exposure, always in metros, currently headed by promotee level officers, morale of probationers low. But I think that the future is very good
  6. DAPINS>DANICS>Pondicherry Police>Pondi Civil. though group B but better than accounting services. lot of administrative powers. DANIP is really good. i met Additional Commissioner of Delhi, a danip, atleast 10 IPS working under him. Good Life.
  7. Armed Forces Headquartes- pathetic must be last
  8. Railway Personal- so so…

Final order must be-

ias>ifs>ips>irs customs>irs it>iaa

or

irts>ides>danip>icls>civil accountc>defence accounts>state services if no group b issue>railway personal>postal and telecom accounts

  • Don’t take it lightly as life becomes hell due to a wrong selection.
  • Morale becomes low specially when no attempts left;
  • don’t go after promotions, pay bands and group A¬†or B.

Believe me, life will be done by the time you will see these things. First satisfy your heart and soul, Promotions will follow.

IAS>IFS>IPS>IRS Customs>IRS IT>IAA

or

IRTS> IDES> DANIP> ICLS> Civil Accounts> Defence Accounts> IIS> State Services (if no Group B issue)> Railway Perssonnel> Postal and Telecom Accounts

IRTS

As I said IAS of Railways, sky is the limit. You will certainly become Member of Railway Board. Railways treat you like King. PSU of Railways are headed by IRTS

IDES

Very good but not better than IRTS. Specially for people who wants to study, or are from solid professional background. Those few who want to relax can go for it.

Training 6 months only. Very amazing infrastructure and facilities. Red light Ambassador earlier than an IAS. But only one type of work for your whole life.

DANIP

Very good for guys who want police powers, good thing being always staying in metros. I have met many and these people command huge amount of respect and power. I put it after IAS, IFS and IPS.

IRS Customs

Customs will be better in long term as IRS. It has become monotonous, two much of paperwork and hard life. In customs, life is  very good, relaxed and has long term potential of being involved in foreign trade, SEZ CEO etc.

I know some people who left IRS Customs after 5 years and were offered 2 crore as Annual Salary. I have met many senior IRAS officers with no administrative powers.

Accounting and Finance is nothing as compared to administrative services. all my friends are from 4 accounting services (IRS)¬†weather IT¬†or Customs have huge exposure and big cadre strengths. It matters a lot in Government of India. Government is planning to open tax attaches in various consulates too. IRTS¬†can’t be better than IRS.

Everybody gets government accommodation depending upon seniority except IAS and IAAS. these people jump the line.

How To TopperSpeak

Reading the Hindu is key to success in UPSC. IAS Topper tells you how.

You wake up ¬†to be faced with the gigantic task of climbing the Himalaya everyday. Reading The Hindu is¬†no less an affair in an IAS aspirant’s life.

If you are a beginner and a late comer, that is a bigger problem, because most of you are preparing for Prelims with little preparation for Mains, and you will end up missing the news which are relevant from Mains point of view.

For instance, you wouldn’t know that you need to focus on certain kind of International Relations & Foreign affairs articles, because they are not asked in the Prelims Examination. ¬†Since your preparation will be largely Pre centric, you have been doing previous years paper, and maybe some pre test series, and you won’t find the Mains oriented news articles helpful. This is especially true for those of you who have not prepared for Mains, and want to begin UPSC preparations with Prelims first.

However, reading the newspaper requires an integrated approach. When you read the newspaper, you prepare fodder for both the Prelims & the Mains examination. Not to mention, it helps develope your personality for the Interview.

Roman Saini , who secured 18th rank in Civil Services Examination 2013 tells you how to read The Hindu in 90 minutes or less.

Roman guides you through some of the most pertinent questions regarding the newspaper, like :

  • What to read in The Hindu
  • Which pages to focus on in the newspaper
  • What keywords are important in choosing the right¬†articles to read.

Roman also deals with the question if a business newspaper is necessary for IAS aspirants – a rather tricky question with varied opinions.

Go ahead, watch this video, and learn How to read The Hindu in 90 minutes or less.

How to Choose the state cadre options in DAF : Be Wise

If you are reading this, you are probably looking forward to filling in your Detailed Application Form (DAF) – the multipage form wherein you need to fill in your service preferences as well as your state cadre preferences for IAS & IPS.

First, Congratulations on clearing the first hurdle called Prelims. Second, the journey has just begun. Because a number of you may have crossed this hurdle before but not quite reached there.

Filling out your state cadre is a BIG decision. Do not take it lightly. Most people do take it lightly with the thinking – Let me first clear the exam, what state I shall get is for later deliberation.

Your  quality of life largely depends on the place you live. And the All India Services is the least All India of all services under the Union Public Service Commission, if you know what I mean.

Factors to keep in mind before you choose your cadre:

1. Do you want to live in an urban or rural area?

If you like to prefer living in rural areas in the early days of your life, all of India is your walking ground. Except AGMUT , which has the magnanimous Delhi , Chandigarh etc.

If you prefer urban centres , then AGMUT (Arunachal Goa Meghalaya and Union Territories) and states close to Delhi will top your list. This would include Haryana, Punjab and adjoining states. This would be followed by more urbanised states like Karnataka. Then states which have a number of urban cities – like Maharashtra has Mumbai, Thane, Nagpur, Nashik, Pune, and more, will be among your top preferences. You will be always be close to an urban city

Bihar for instance, doesn’t quite have many urban centres, barring Patna , where you could go watch a movie, or just hang out.

2. Do you want Power?

If yes, then at the cost of quality of life, you may choose Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and likes. The Mai-Baap culture is still intact. And you could live like Zamindars, if not kings, as a DM in these states.

3.  Do you want to live close to your family?

By family, I mean your would be family. Your spouse and your child. Let us face it. You will be in a rural area for the first decade of your life. If your spouse is working, she shall not accompany you. Worse, if your child grows up, he/she will stay with him in an urban city for his education. So you don’t quite get to live with him/her.

With states like Maharashtra , where there may be a big city nearby (assuming you don’t get to be the DM of that city – Nasik, Nagpur etc.), your family may move to that city and may live close by and you may be able to visit them on weekends or vice versa.

With a state like Bihar, forget about visiting your family for weekends, because they shall probably stay in Patna eventually when you aren’t able to sell your DMship and your big bunglow as an attraction anymore, while you may be stuck in Western Champaran.

Traversing all of UP is like traversing half of India. Staying with family isn’t quite easy. UP, however, and Western UP in particular has some big cities where you may be able to fit in your family. Or if you are lucky, you may get posted close to Allahabad or Lucknow.

4. Do you want some tangible achievements in your area of work?

If yes, then Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Uttarakhand etc are states where you may actually be able to achieve results. These states have little political interference.

5. Do you want to become a DM soon?

Then UP, Bihar, Chhattisgarh etc, should be your top choices. You could be a DM in no time here. Less than five years. Southern States like Andhra, Tamil Nadu and states like West Bengal have a slow promotion to DM in place, though they are preferred a lot.

A person can soon become a DM in UP while his batchmates may be struggling with a CDP/ DDC post elsewhere. Then, of course, you have too many people at DM rank, and the government can choose its favourites. Welcome to the world of Pairavi and Lobbying.

6. How much political interference can you survive?

Uttar Pradesh, Bihar (until Nitish Kumar came in) etc top the list for political interference. This would be followed by West Bengal & Kerala (unusual for it to figure on any list.) These two are on the list for political interference due to communist parties in place, looking for a committed bureaucracy.

Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan have little political interference as compared to the above.

Your choices in the DAF will decide the next 30-35 years of your life. As said earlier, quality of life is directly related to the city you live in.

Choose wisely.

Note: The above article is valid for IAS. For IPS, the power equations and autonomy of IPS vis-a-vis IAS, number of Commissionerates , and the social status of police in the society will be guiding factors for the same.

How to & why should one read Pratiyogita Darpan?

Pratiyogita Darpan is a monthly current affairs magazine for Civil Services and other competitive examinations.

It is freely available over the Internet, and can be downloaded as pdf file.

Why should I read Pratiyogita Darpan?

Because it is a good magazine, in the first place. Secondly, most aspirants make newspaper notes between Prelim and Mains Examination and technically, it is a logical thing to do.

But there are two periods when most of us miss out on making Newspaper notes :

1. After Mains Examination till the Interview2. From the Interview result till the Prelims

But for Mains, (which is in December in 2014), one needs to revise current affairs from the end of Mains till the month of November, 2014. It is quite likely that you have made notes of the months August – October from the newspaper. But what about December-Prelims period?

The month of November December is a very crucial period. A lot of International summits take place, and it is Winter in India. A number of foreign heads of states visit India in the month of November December (this has happened year after year.) You do not want to miss out on the news of those months – especially related to International diplomacy and UNFCC meets etc.

(Thankfully, no major bills are taken up during the Winter session, usually so you dont have to do the bills then.)

So, if you have missed out on notes in these months and even otherwise, you can use it to revise and study first hand, current affairs from Pratiyogita Darpan.

(They have an android app too, but when I tried it on my Moto G, it crashed way too many times. An alternative is to download the magzter app and buy individual issues for 0.99 USD, and you may resort to it when you have no way of getting any Current Affairs notes of December to April or so. Otherwise it may not be worth the pains.)

This may be useful especially for two kinds of people:

1. Those who do a lot of Internet based study, using Laptops, iPads, Tablets, feedly etc.

2. Some of us who actually are in a job, and try to catch up whilst in office.

Do take note of one thing that Pratiyogita Darpan may be of immense use for doing IR articles – at least the coverage , usually 1-2 countries, are given in every issue – is very comprehensive – especially for beginners.

A good way to use it is to tear the useful articles, staple and and decrease your exam load, both physically and psychologically.

So click here to download Pratiyogita Darpan [English] Issues – Monthwise.
